Claim Tottenham may now hijack big club’s move for player with contact made

Tottenham have made contact to sign an "exemplary" attacker, and could hijack a big club's move for him in the process.

Spurs aiming to complete forward deal this summer

A plethora of different media sources have backed that Spurs are seeking new attacking options later this year, whether that's a natural striker or further back in midfield.

Reports suggest that the north Londoners are firm contenders to sign Pedro Neto from Wolves among others, with Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams also among Tottenham's transfer targets for later in the year.

Ange Postecoglou already has an abundance of attacking quality in his side, but uncertainty surrounds the futures of Bryan Gil and Manor Solomon, with it still yet to be officially confirmed that they will trigger the £15 million buy-out clause in Timo Werner's deal.

"Raphinha has been mentioned as well," said journalist Dean Jones on Tottenham's hunt for new wingers.

"Nico Williams, at Athletic Bilbao, is another player that they're continuing to monitor. It will be interesting. Pedro Neto will be a very difficult one to get because of the competition that there will be to actually sign him. But Tottenham have signed a couple of players recently, that they've done well to get through the door, and they will believe that anything is possible."

Spurs could well look to add more star quality in that area, and there have been previous links to talent from abroad – like Genoa star Albert Gudmundsson.

The Iceland international has been a star player for the Serie A side this season, and Tottenham already boast a good business relationship with Genoa, having agreed a £25 million deal over defender Radu Dragusin in the January transfer window.

Tottenham could hijack Inter move for Gudmundsson

Inter Milan have actually taken some steps to sign Gudmundsson behind the scenes, but according to newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), they face a fierce transfer rival in Spurs.

Tottenham are said to have made contact to sign Gudmundsson and could well foil Inter's plans for the attacking midfielder, coming after his brilliant campaign in Italy where he's bagged 10 goals and three assists over 27 league appearances.

The 26-year-old is an interesting option and can play anywhere across the attacking midfield, including central and out wide.

“If he keeps improving, he won’t stay at Genoa for long,” said Kevin Strootman to Il Secolo XIX newspaper (via Football Italia).

“He reminds me of Salah when he was at Roma, in that every now and then he disappears. Much like Salah then, he would have four or five chances per match and only score at most one.

“They used to say that if Salah was more clinical, he would be playing for Liverpool, and that is exactly what happened. All joking aside, Gudmundsson is a devastating player and also an exemplary professional.”

Cricket West Indies gives 'in principle' approval for England tour

UK government gives green light for resumption of professional sport as West Indies finalise plans

ESPNcricinfo staff30-May-2020CWI has approved West Indies’ scheduled tour of England in principle following a meeting via teleconference on Thursday. The Test series, part of the World Test Championship, was originally slated to start on June 4 but was pushed back because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The boards are now looking at an early July start, with the West Indies team arriving in June and isolating prior to the series, which, if it goes ahead, will be played behind closed doors. The board’s formal approval came days after CWI chief executive Johnny Grave told ESPNcricinfo that he was “increasingly confident” that the tour would take place. A CWI statement said the decision was made after detailed discussions between its medical representatives and those of the ECB, including plans around logistics and creating a bio-secure environment during the tour. With the UK government on Saturday* releasing stage three guidance for the resumption of elite sport, which permits the return of competition from June 1, the tour now awaits approvals from the various national governments in the Caribbean region for player and staff movement via chartered planes. Players and staff would be screened regularly through the tour as part of comprehensive ECB “bio-security” planning. The decision follows weeks of discussions between the two boards, including a phase where CWI wasn’t as confident as they have been this past week, given the marked difference in Covid-19 cases between the two regions. But the ECB’s safety plans have changed the CWI’s mind. The proposed schedule for West Indies’ tour of England•ESPNcricinfo Ltd”What has changed is the ECB have got more confident that they’ve got a robust and safe plan to deal with cricket in a biosecure environment behind closed doors,” Grave had said during the interview. “Our medical team are getting more confident and comfortable with those plans. Our players and support staff who we have met with [on conference calls] are beginning to understand what a seven-week tour behind closed doors might look like.”Subject to a negative Covid-19 test result, the squad is expected to be chartered to Antigua from various parts of the Caribbean, following which they will fly together to the UK. Upon getting there, the team will spend three weeks in their quarantine and training facility. The CWI statement said that the board “is now in the process of seeking to put all of the approvals and logistics in place within the Caribbean, including seeking permission from the various National Governments to facilitate the movement of players and support staff, using private charter planes and conducting medical screenings and individual COVID-19 testing for all members of the touring party”.”If someone tests positive at any stage in the tour they would be removed from the main squad and will be placed into isolation within the biosecure environment and will be treated by the team doctor along with the other on-site medical support staff,” Grave said. “Should any player have more serious symptoms, they will be treated in hospital at pre-arranged facilities.”It is also expected that player replacement during a match, along the lines of a concussion substitute, will be mulled by the ICC cricket committee when it meets in June.*1900 BST – This story was updated following the UK government announcement

The former Premier League striker had a wonderful season with Marseille as his 30-goal campaign led the club to the Europa League semi-final. However, the rest of the side struggled and the club missed out on European football as they finished 8th in Ligue 1 despite the Gabonese striker's 17 goals in the league.

Aubameyang has now secured a move to Al-Qadsiah on a two-year deal and will join former Real Madrid defender Nacho and Koen Casteels from Wolfsburg as the club's third signing of the season from Europe's top five leagues.

On Instagram, Aubameyang wrote an emotional message as he said: "THANK YOU MARSEILLE!

"It’s been an emotional year and I’d like to thank the whole club, the staff, my team-mates and our supporters.

"You’ve made me stronger and these memories with you will stay with me forever.

"As you know, I’ve always followed my father’s advice, which has helped me to become the player I am, so we’ve made this decision for the rest of my career. It’s time for me to start a new chapter."

WHAT NEXT FOR AUBAMEYANG?

The former Barcelona striker will now make the move to the Saudi club as he will look to begin pre-season training with the newly promoted side.

Aston Villa in "pole position" with Emery moving for soon-to-be free agent

Aston Villa could be set to make a move for another defender this summer, with Unai Emery reportedly pushing to sign an experienced player who is heading towards free agent status.

Villa will need to be clever this summer

Aston Villa may well be flying in the Premier League this season, but they may find this summer significantly more of a challenge. Emery's side currently sit fourth despite a 4-0 hammering at the hands of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

With fifth place likely to be enough to secure Champions League football next season, they appear to be well set to be playing in Europe's premier competition for the first time since 1982, with the Midlands outfit holding a nine-point advantage over Manchester United with just ten games left of the season.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins

However, it is not all rosy at Villa Park. Last week, the club announced major losses as a result of player transfers. Spending over £90m over the summer, they will come under pressure to stay within financial fair play rules this summer.

"The Club has reported a loss for the year of £119.6m after tax", an official statement read. "This compares with a small profit of £0.3m in the prior year. It is important to note that these figures are in line with the strategic business plan, and we continue to operate within the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules."

There are of course two solutions to this issue. One would be to sell players, with several stars including Douglas Luiz already strongly linked with moves away.

Alternatively, they could look to strengthen their current squad on a shoestring budget, and to that end they appear to be making good progress.

Emery driving free agent move

Emery has already looked to La Liga once to bolster his backline, bringing in Pau Torres from former club Villarreal last summer. Now, he looks set to return to the Spanish top flight to make a move for Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso, according to reports.

The Spaniard is out of contract with the Rojablanco this summer, and is the subject of plenty of interest from across Europe. According to Sport Witness though, it is the Villans that lead the race for his signature should he depart the Spanish capital.

They claim that Villa sit in "pole position", largely because Emery personally "moved well in advance" to land the 28-year-old on a free transfer this summer, despite recent interest from clubs across Europe including Spanish giants Barcelona and Italian duo Juventus and AC Milan.

There is a twist though, as Atletico have "reopened talks" to keep the defender at the Wanda Metropolitano beyond this summer. Should they prove successful, all of Villa's hard work will come to nothing. However, should he opt to move on, he could well end up with Emery at Villa Park, while the move could hurt rivals Nottingham Forest with Atletico tipped to replace him with Forest centre-back Murillo.

Tottenham think striker is perfect for Ange and may now open transfer talks

Tottenham are under the belief that a "world-class" and "pacey" striker is ideal for Ange Postecoglou's system, meaning they could open talks to sign him this summer.

Spurs eyeing new marquee forward this summer

Reports in the last few weeks have suggested that the north Londoners are keen on adding a new number nine, despite the fine form of Richarlison, who's scored nine goals in his last 10 league games when fully fit and available.

Tottenham are said to be chasing a long-term replacement for club-record goalscorer Harry Kane, with those behind-the-scenes apparently laying the groundwork to sign a marquee centre-forward later this year.

The Lilywhites have coped well without Kane since his multi-million-pound move to Bayern Munich last summer, but those within the club are now rumoured to be plotting a move for his heir.

Indeed, some interesting names have been mentioned already about who they could target, and one is Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

The Bees star has just returned from a long on-field ban for alleged gambling breaches, scoring four goals in his last eight league games, and he is thought to be attracting interest from a host of top sides ahead of the summer window.

That includes Spurs, as Postecoglou's side are thought to be among the contenders to sign Toney later this year. The England international, as confirmed by his club manager, is also very likely to depart west London this year.

Ivan Toney

"It is relatively obvious that Ivan Toney will probably be sold this summer," said Brentford boss Thomas Frank.

"It can be 'expensive' to sell your best player, but conversely I also know that this summer he only has one year left on his contract with us. We also know what he is worth. I don't think there are many strikers in the world who are better than him right now."

The 27-year-old will be a hot commodity when the window reopens, it would seem, and GiveMeSport now have an update on his future concerning Spurs.

Tottenham believe Toney is ideal for Postecoglou's system

According to the outlet, Tottenham think Toney is the ideal fit for Postecoglou's system and could open talks for him – if they deem him available for the right price. They apparently have no intention of getting involved in a bidding war with the likes of Arsenal or other suitors and will entertain the possibility of bidding if Brentford are willing to sell at around £60 million or less.

Toney's proven ability as an English top-flight goalscorer is notable, and it's clear that he could add a different dynamic going forward.

"It’s down to him [how far he goes]. He’s got a bit of everything. He’s powerful, he’s pacey and skilful. Year-by-year your football IQ goes up," said former Brentford player Hermann Hreidarsson.

"He’s a world-class player and it’s down to him. He can go wherever he wants."

WHAT BAYERN SAID

Joao really wanted to come to Bayern, and we need players like that. He's an important building block for our future. Naseem Shah becomes youngest to take hat-trick as Bangladesh collapse dramatically

The 16-year-old engineered a collapse of 4 for 2, as Bangladesh squandered a good start

The Report by Varun Shetty09-Feb-2020Stumps Bangladesh had their best day of the Test, and were close to being the team that made most progress on the day, before a late hat-trick from 16-year-old Naseem Shah triggered a collapse where they lost four wickets for two runs. They were left reeling at stumps, 86 behind with only four wickets in hand. Naseem became the youngest man to take a Test hat-trick.All three of Naseem’s hat-trick wickets were built around his express pace. He burst one through Najmul Hossain Shanto’s defences from around the wicket, and had some assistance from captain Azhar Ali who successfully reviewed a not-out decision on the lbw. Next ball, he caught nightwatchman Taijul Islam in front with a yorker, before firing a full straight delivery outside off that was met with an ungainly chop from Mahmudullah which ended up at first slip.Naseem walked off the pitch two balls after that over with a niggle, but he had significantly dented Bangladesh. As if the score of 126 for 5 didn’t make that evident, Mohammad Mithun, the highest-scorer in the first innings, managed to confirm it entirely: he was out bowled, trying to slog a Yasir Shah googly one ball before stumps. It was a sour end for Bangladesh, who were on course for finishing a good day with wickets in hand and more than half the deficit erased as Shanto and Mominul Haque looked solid through a 71-run stand for the third wicket. Earlier in the day, they had allowed Pakistan to add only 103 to their overnight score of 342 for 3.The last session began with Tamim Iqbal showing glimpses of the form that helped him make a triple-century in first-class cricket at the start of the month. But Yasir’s introduction straight after tea proved pivotal in dismissing him, as the the legspinner’s around the wicket, jumpy deliveries had Tamim in two minds throughout the short period during which he faced Yasir. Having just survived a top-edge trying to slog sweep him, Tamim ended up playing the wrong line on the back foot and was trapped in front soon after.Yasir, who has notoriously been off-colour in recent Tests, as well as in the first innings of this one, looked to have found some of his old verve back during that spell. But Shanto and Mominul – both – were resolute in defence against his around-the-wicket line, and confident in attack. Mominul took the more orthodox scoring options, prefering to hit straight, including a clean lofted-drive over mid-on. Shanto, on the other hand, was more keen on the sweep, including a perfectly nailed reverse-sweep from the rough outside off. But only Mominul made it to stumps.Naseem had earlier got one ball to stay low in the corridor at the start of his spell, and then bowled debutant Saif Hassan for 16, having pinned him to the crease. But, barring that ball, the surface continued to look batting friendly as Pakistan’s fast bowlers found nowhere near the same assistance that Bangladesh’s seamers had found in the morning. In the first session, Bangladesh’s seamers led the delayed resistance from the visitors, picking up three wickets as the four-over old ball hooped around in the first hour. Abu Jayed, who took two of the three wickets that had fallen on Saturday, caught overnight centurion Babar Azam halfway between a cut and a leave off the second ball of the day to have him caught at first slip.Ebadot Hossain’s struggles from day two seemed to have vanished and for the first time in the match, Mominul was able to apply sustained pressure on Pakistan. Ebadot bowled nine overs in his first spell, seven of those in tandem with Jayed, and by the end of the period, Asad Shafiq, the other overnight batsman, had fallen for 65.Rubel Hossain, who took three wickets, had Mohammad Rizwan top-edging to fine leg off his first ball of the day and Pakistan were reduced to 374 for 6. Haris Sohail then made a counterattacking 75 off 103 and made the bulk of the 71 runs added by the last four wickets as the lower order crumbled around him. After some general watchfulness at the start, Sohail opened up following Rizwan’s wicket. From 12 off 39 at the drinks break in the first session, Sohail raced to his fifty off 71 balls, helped along by a non-appeal when he had edged a delivery at the start of this innings. He extended his first two-digit score since the recently-concluded Australia series into a brisk, positive knock at a strike rate just shy of 73. Sohail’s innings was characterised by handsome driving through the covers, and most of his rare runs through the leg side came off two sixes against the left-arm spinner Taijul Islam, with quick feet to get to the pitch of tossed up deliveries. He hit seven fours and two sixes before holing out at deep midwicket to Taijul.

Man Utd struck gold with Ten Hag signing who’s now worth more than Bruno

Over the seasons, every football club will have had one or two signings which they may feel haven't performed to the standards that they initially expected.

However, in the case of Manchester United, this has happened on more than one occasion in recent times. So, when a signing made by Erik ten Hag has actually worked out for the better, it comes as quite a shock.

Players such as £86m man Antony – for instance – have cost the Red Devils a small fortune without making a notable impact on the side – the Brazilian scoring just once in all competitions this season.

A signing made in the 2023/24 summer transfer window, however, has gone against the grain and proved his worth to Ten Hag's squad.

How much Rasmus Hojlund cost Man United

That player is, unsurprisingly, Rasmus Hojlund. Since arriving at Old Trafford, he has seen his stock rise considerably.

After joining the club for a fee in the region of £72m, there was a lot of pressure upon the shoulders of the then-20-year-old following his move from Atalanta.

Prior to joining the Red Devils, the striker had only played one season in Europe's top five leagues and that was whilst he was in Bergamo, having plied his trade for Sturm Graz and FC Copenhagen before that.

The Denmark international had a fairly prolific season in Italy and managed to score ten goals in 34 games. Despite this, the striker had something of a slow start to Premier League life and only managed to score his first top-flight goal on Boxing Day against Aston Villa.

Since getting over that first-goal hump, however, the 21-year-old has managed to bag a further six goals for United and has scored in six consecutive top-flight clashes, with two coming in his most recent game against Luton Town.

Thanks to this good run of form, the in-form striker has seen his value scale up and is proving to be a very smart piece of business by Ten Hag – even if he has now been struck down by a 'small injury' that will keep him sidelined for two to three weeks.

As aforementioned, this recent sharp increase in form – prior to the recent injury setback – has had a positive impact on his value as he now finds himself worth more than star-man, Bruno Fernandes.

The current market value of Rasmus Hojlund

As per the CIES Football Observatory, the striker is now worth €100m (£85m) whereas fan favourite, Fernandes, is only worth €80m (£68m).

This may come as a shock to most as, more often than not, Fernandes is among United's best players and is always one of the first names on the team sheet, having started 25 league games this term.

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

Additionally, as Hojlund is still a relative youngster, there is plenty of room for him to develop, and it feels as if Manchester United have found their striker for many years to come.

Due to his recent performances, he has been lauded by many, with fellow teammate, Harry Maguire, deeming the youngster as "exceptional."

"We've seen the talent he has, and now it is really clicking for him in front of goal," the former Leicester City defender said. "We always knew that was going to come because he's an exceptional talent

"He's going to be a big player for this club. I'm sure he'll keep scoring goals and there are many more to come."

Wage Burners

Football FanCast's Wage Burners series explores the salaries of the modern-day game.

Receiving this level of praise from a player as experienced as Maguire is a testament to how well Hojlund is playing and shows that not all of Ten Hag's transfer decisions have been below par during his time at Old Trafford.

'See how many hat-tricks we can get together' – Harry Kane sets challenge for Thomas Muller after Bayern Munich legend begins MLS adventure with Vancouver Whitecaps

Harry Kane has warmly thrown down the gauntlet to Thomas Muller after he followed in his former Bayern Munich team-mate’s footsteps by scoring a hat-trick against Hoffenheim on Saturday afternoon. The England captain maintained his exceptional start to the 2025-26 season as he fired the German champions to a thumping victory in the Bundesliga.

Kane already up to 13 goals for the season in ridiculous start

Kane’s hat-trick against Hoffenheim took his goal tally to 13 for the season so far, having netted eight times in just four league matches. He also scored twice in Bayern’s Champions League victory over Chelsea in midweek, with his other goals coming in the German Cup and the German Super Cup.

AdvertisementMuller speaks directly to Kane following Vancouver hat-trick

The former Tottenham striker’s latest hat-trick came after Muller, who played alongside Kane at Bayern between 2023 and 2025, scored three times in the Vancouver Whitecaps’ 7-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union in MLS on September 14. And in a social media post following his efforts, Bayern icon Muller spoke directly to Kane, saying “Harry, now I know how you feel.”

Kane responds! England captain issues warm challenge to Muller

Kane was quick to respond to Muller over social media following his hat-trick against Hoffenheim, challenging both himself and the Germany legend to keep up their rich veins of goalscoring form this season. Speaking directly to Muller on Instagram, Kane said: “Wanted to give a little shout out to Thomas Muller. I know you sent me a video last week and, yeah, here’s one back and let’s see how many hat-tricks we can get together. So wishing you all the best for the rest of the season.”

Muller achieved ridiculous numbers in legendary Bayern spell

Emerging through Bayern’s youth system in 2008, Muller went on to become the club’s all-time leading appearance maker with 756 matches played across 17 seasons. The forward scored 250 goals and recorded 223 assists for the German giants, winning 13 league titles and two Champions League crowns. He joined Vancouver on a free transfer in August.
