Brits, Ismail, Khaka, Wolvaardt script historic South Africa win for maiden World Cup final

Contributions from Nat Sciver-Brunt, Ecclestone and Knight not enough as England fall short

South Africa staged their best performance of the tournament – with bat, ball and in the field – to upset England and secure a place in a World Cup final for the first time in any form of international cricket – men’s or women’s.Their victory was built on a 96-run opening stand between Tazmin Brits and Laura Wolvaardt as both racked up half-centuries for the second consecutive time in this tournament before Marizanne Kapp’s cameo of 27 from 13 balls took the hosts to 164 for 4. That left England needing their joint third-highest successful T20I run chase and joint-highest at a World Cup, matching their 2009 semi-final effort against Australia.Ayabonga Khaka and Shabnim Ismail then claimed seven wickets between them – and Brits took a Women’s T20I record-equalling four catches to put the task beyond England and set up a clash for the trophy with defending champions Australia on Sunday. All of this had seemed so far away a fortnight ago.The hosts had lost the opening match of the tournament to Sri Lanka by three runs at Newlands, setting back their campaign and were also beaten by Australia in Gqeberha. But they defeated Bangladesh in their final group game to squeeze into the knockout stages at the expense of New Zealand. Back in Cape Town on Friday, they held their nerve superbly to pull off a stunning victory before 7,507 fans.Heather Knight and England came so close•AFP/Getty Images

Ismail, Khaka the destroyersIsmail bowled with pace and guile in the powerplay – including some aggressive bouncers, one of which was clocked at 128kph. She claimed two wickets in that time, although England had 55 runs on the board compared to South Africa’s 37 without loss. Sophia Dunkley first miscued to midwicket, where Brits took a simple catch but it was Brits’ absolute blinder from the same position to remove Alice Capsey for a second-ball duck that set the innings alight. Cramped by the short ball, Capsey steered the ball to the right of the fielder, who ran towards it and dived, clutching the ball just above the turf as her team-mates steamed in to congratulate her – none more so than Ismail, who leapt into Brits’ arms.Brits took another sharp catch to remove Danni Wyatt and give Khaka her first after Wyatt had been put down by Wolvaardt off Khaka’s bowling earlier in the innings. It looked like it would fall to Nat Sciver-Brunt, England’s in-form batter, to rescue her side, particularly when Chloe Tryon missed a caught-and-bowled chance, but Brits came to the fore again with a catch at long-on off a Nadine de Klerk slower ball.Having also had Amy Jones caught by Anneke Bosch, two wickets in two balls from Khaka to remove Sophie Ecclestone and Katherine Sciver-Brunt in the 18th over left England needing 25 runs off the remaining two overs. Heather Knight’s six off Kapp helped make it 13 off the last, but then Ismail pegged back Knight’s leg stump with three balls remaining and 12 still needed. Sarah Glenn and Charlie Dean managed just five between them before Glenn dropped to her haunches in anguish and the pair trudged off arm-in-arm as the South Africans celebrated wildly. The Brits and Wolvaardt show: Part 2After a sluggish start – South Africa scored just 14 off the first four overs after winning the toss – they started to raise the tempo led by Wolvaardt’s heave a long way over the fence at wide long-off. After the powerplay, they looked more in control as she and Brits followed up their unbroken stand worth 117 runs against Bangladesh with another key partnership.Tazmin Brits produced a second successive fifty in a must-win match for South Africa•Getty Images

Wolvaardt brought up her sixth T20I fifty with a four through cover off Ecclestone but fell three balls later to a leading edge gobbled up by Dean at cover. But that prompted Brits to flick the switch as she danced down the pitch twice in three balls to power Glenn over deep midwicket and long-on for two sixes. She brought up her half-century next ball with a four through the covers, helping herself to 17 runs off a pivotal 15th over. Brits eventually fell to a solid catch by Katherine but not before she had propelled her side towards a competitive total.Ecclestone keeps England in itEngland hadn’t helped themselves with a scrappy performance in the field, but Ecclestone’s two wickets in three balls – she snared the potentially explosive Tryon, caught attempting to pull but picking out Nat at deep midwicket for just 3 and de Klerk, bowled for a second-ball duck – momentarily derailed South Africa’s final push in the penultimate over. But then Kapp, the beneficiary of a misfield while on 2, cashed in first off a high full toss by Katherine in the final over which she pulled for a one-bounce four through deep backward square leg. Then she hammered back-to-back fours off the last two balls piercing the gap between cover and mid-off and high over deep midwicket to give the hosts the late lift they needed.

Putting India in 'difficult situations' is Hardik's priority as T20I captain

“It’s going to help us to be ready for the big games whenever the opportunity comes,” Hardik says

Hemant Brar04-Jan-2023

There has been some talk, though not in official circles, of Hardik Pandya being given the reins of India’s T20I side•Getty Images

Hardik Pandya is not afraid of putting his side in difficult situations during bilateral T20Is, long-term gains being more important than short-term ones – he said as much at the toss during the first T20I against Sri Lanka and reiterated it after the game. The record at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium favoured chasing sides, who had won 24 of the 41 T20s played there in the last two years before Tuesday’s game. So it was understandable that Dasun Shanaka opted to field after winning the toss.Hardik, who is leading India in Rohit Sharma’s absence, was fine with that. “To be honest, we were going to bat first,” he said at the toss. “It is a chasing ground, but I wanted our team to be challenged. In bilaterals, we want to put ourselves in more difficult situations than [we] generally [do]. So I am happy to bat because had we won the toss, we anyway would have batted first.”Watch on ESPN Player in the UK

WATCH the second India vs Sri Lanka T20I LIVE

It’s possible Hardik was just playing mind games. But it’s true that batting first has been the Achilles’ heel for India in T20Is. They have lost eight games in multi-team T20I tournaments since March 31, 2016, when they lost to West Indies in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup. On all those occasions, they were batting first. Then, with Sri Lanka needing 13 from the final over as they chased 163 for victory, Hardik gave the ball to Axar Patel when he himself had an over left. Chamika Karunaratne pulled Axar’s third ball for a six to bring the equation down to five from three, but Axar held his nerve and did the job for India. At the post-match presentation, Hardik was asked why he took that gamble. One reason behind that could be that Hardik was struggling with cramps, but he again talked about challenging the players by creating tough situations.”How I am looking at all these games is, I want to put the team in difficult situations because it’s going to help us in big games,” he said. “Bilaterals are something which we are very good at, but this is how we are going to keep challenging ourselves. Yes, we might lose a game here and there, which is fine, I am okay with that, because in the long term, it’s going to help us to be ready for the big games whenever the opportunity comes.”2:09

Sangakkara: Hardik’s support role with the ball absolutely crucial for India

Earlier, with India defending a below-par 162, Hardik had set the tone with the ball, sending down three overs in the powerplay for just 12 runs. Not only did he get the ball to move away from the right-hand batters, but also swung it back, which was something new.”Since the time I have come back in the [2022] IPL, I have been bowling in the nets, and I have been bowling with the new ball only,” he said. “I have worked on my swing bowling and that [the inswinger] is the new ball that I have learnt.”I like bowling with the new ball because it allows me to swing the ball and challenge the batter. In that, if I can get a wicket here and there, it allows me to use other [seam] bowlers later in the innings.”It’s not known – though there has been some debate around it – if Hardik would continue as India’s T20I captain when Rohit Sharma returns. Still, he was asked if he was getting used to being addressed as India captain. “Now, yes, definitely,” he said with a smile.

Efeito Textor?

O time do interior levou R$ 8 milhões.

Arsenal express "formal" January interest in signing £67m Barcelona star

Arteta could go head-to-head with his former coaching partner.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 17, 2024

Arsenal couldn’t past Everton last weekend, despite dominating the overall play and creating chances, and were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw in what was viewed as a disappointing result for Arteta in the title race.

Their stalemate against the Toffees extended Arsenal’s run to three league games without a single goal from open play, which could be seen as a real worry, as the home side yet again struggled to break past a side deploying the low-block.

Arsenal’s approach play cannot be faulted, but there is seemingly an ongoing issue with making it count on a consistent basis.

“The frustrating part is that, watching it back, all the incredible things the team does and still not get rewarded for the three points,” said Arteta on Arsenal’s struggle to bury chances.

“Looking back at other games in the league and our margins were ten times bigger than many other teams that have won that day, but this is football. At the end of the day what we have to do is put the ball in the back of the net, and then we don’t have that issue. What the team is producing and the way the team dominates the game, there is very little to say.”

Domestically, Arteta has been quite reliant on set-piece goals since the start of December, but his side did put Ligue 1 title contenders Monaco to the sword with a 3-0 win over them in the Champions League.

Arsenal express "formal" January interest in signing Raphinha

The January transfer window is looming, and it could pose a solution to Arsenal’s struggles with being more ruthless when it comes to converting opportunities.

According to reports, Arsenal are considering the prospect of signing a fresh attacking option next month, and Barcelona forward Raphinha is being linked with a move to north London.

A Spanish media source claims that Arsenal have expressed a “formal” January interest in signing Raphinha, amid the Brazilian’s exceptional season at the Camp Nou.

The 28-year-old has bagged an incredible 17 goals and 10 assists in 24 appearances across all competitions so far, including six in six Champions League games, so it will be pretty difficult for Arsenal to prise him away from the Camp Nou mid-season – given his importance to Hansi Flick’s cause.

However, they apparently have it in mind, with the £198,000-per-week ex-Leeds United star on their transfer shortlist. Raphinha’s deal expires in 2027, and it is believed the La Liga title contenders won’t let him go for less than £67 million, perhaps even more.

Howe must regret "crazy" Newcastle sale who’s now compared to Bellingham

da bet esporte: It’s been a bit up and down for Newcastle United this season, but the zest and zeal on display against Liverpool on Wednesday evening suggests that Eddie Howe’s players are determined to restore their Champions League place.

da bet vitoria: Newcastle certainly have the squad to do it. Alexander Isak scores for fun at number nine, while Anthony Gordon brings tireless energy on the flank, as does Joelinton the centre. Joelinton, it would seem, is a byword for ‘raging bull’ – and how Tyneside love him for it.

Joelinton for Newcastle

Bruno Guimaraes, maestro, magician, makes it all tick. In defence, Dan Burn stands firm, strong, immovable. Fabian Schar is dynamic and brings a dimension to the club’s attacking efforts.

There’s so much to like, especially with the Magpies strengthening their homegrown quota.

Newcastle's rising academy success

You can have all the success in the world, but it won’t be as sweet if academy prospects aren’t part of the mix. There’s something very visceral about it, some added emotion that is given rise through ‘one of our own’ playing a part in illustrious success.

Sean Longstaff rose to the fore alongside his outfit in 2022/23, was hailed as Newcastle’s “unsung hero” by pundit Paul Merson as he starred en route to a stunning fourth-place Premier League finish.

Sean Longstaff for Newcastle

The 27-year-old remains in Howe’s team still. But he’s not the only one. Newcastle’s academy is making gains and heading toward its heyday.

Lewis Miley is a real treat, bursting onto the scene last season to play a crucial role in battling a detrimental injury crisis that hindered what was supposed to be a momentous term. Still, the 18-year-old has a big future ahead.

There are more youngsters on the rise. Ben Parkinson, Charlie McArthur and Alfie Harrison, to name a few. PIF also acted and signed Vakhtang Salia in October, with the versatile Georgian forward, 17, regarded as a significant talent and the country’s next version of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

And so on. Newcastle fans must be delighted with the progress that the club has made, even if there are some bumps in the road. One such stumble centres on the loss of Elliot Anderson, whose sale to Nottingham Forest this year was a necessary evil, though saddening all the same.

Newcastle sold their answer to Jude Bellingham

Earlier this season, with Nottingham Forest flying high, Alan Smith, live on Sky Sports, gushed over Anderson’s silky dribbling ability during a contest against Crystal Palace, even likening him to the great Lionel Messi.

The colour commentator said: “It was like Lionel Messi there in the box. Not once but twice, happy feet. Wonderful play from Elliot Anderson.”

Anderson is an exciting talent, but Messi he is not. Still. Such effusive words merely highlight the quality that he possesses – were a young star to carry even the vestiges of one of Messi’s many qualities, they would be set for life.

His sale was of course necessary, ensuring – along with the £30m sale of Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion – that the coveted trinity – Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak – were kept on Tyneside.

But even so, it’s a shame that alternative means weren’t realised, for the 21-year-old was highly regarded by Howe and his team and was sold for a £35m figure despite a relative lack of experience – a testament to his natural qualities.

As per FBref, Anderson’s dynamic attacking skillset has seen him likened to some big names, most notably Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham. As you can see below, the comparisons aren’t unjust.

Now, we’re not saying that Anderson is the superior player, but the metrics do suggest as such. Joking. Although, it does make an interesting comment on the Tricky Trees playmaker’s level, his creativity and ball-carrying quality.

Bellingham is one of the world’s true football sensations, joining Los Blancos from Borussia Dortmund as a touted prodigy but defying belief in his maiden campaign, notching 36 goal contributions across 43 matches in all competitions en route to lifting the La Liga and Champions League titles.

He’s obviously better than Anderson, but to think that Newcastle could have sculpted their own version of the Birmingham-born player is frustrating – and through a homegrown talent at that.

It’s curious to think that Newcastle allowed a player of such creative significance depart, especially given their playmaking and attacking struggles this season – the enthralling draw with Liverpool notwithstanding.

According to the Premier League’s official site, Newcastle have only created 22 big chances, 17th in the division. Southampton, bottom-placed here and in the actual standings, have created 19.

Last season, the injury-hit Toon created 97 big chances across the campaign, ranking them joint-second with four-in-a-row champions Manchester City. It’s obvious where United need to improve.

Kieran Trippier has waxed lyrical about the versatile midfielder’s skills in the past, saying:

Newcastle's Kieran Trippier

It’s true that he would be playing a role under Howe’s wing this season, but whether Anderson would have nailed down a regular starting berth is another question entirely.

Even so, it’s a shame that he left, and Magpies supporters around Tyneside and beyond will root for their academy star and hope that maybe, just maybe, he will return one day.

Newcastle now considering £66m move to sign Lloyd Kelly upgrade in January

It would be a massive signing that could help Howe’s side get back on track.

Shan Masood 'takes blame' for Pakistan not finishing strongly

“I think Shadab and I hold ourselves accountable for not staying there and getting us to 155-160”

Danyal Rasool14-Nov-20223:33

Fleming: Pakistan made ‘massive mistake’ in last four overs

At the last T20I World Cup 12 months ago, Shan Masood was doing commentary work with ESPNcricinfo. Two months ago, he had never played a T20I for Pakistan.Yet, immediately after Pakistan’s five-wicket loss to England in the T20 World Cup final, he was the one sent out to the MCG press area to try and make sense of a dispiriting evening for Pakistan after finishing as their top scorer in the game. After a middle-order stutter, he had built up a 36-run stand off 25 balls with Shadab Khan, laying the groundwork for a big finish, before both fell in the space of six balls and Pakistan’s innings melted away.Masood considered himself and Shadab responsible for the wheels coming off the innings. “When Babar and I were batting, we built a very good platform and then lost two wickets” Masood said. “We recovered that with Shadab and myself and then I don’t think we finished well and I think me and Shadab hold ourselves accountable for not staying there.Related

Shaheen Afridi could miss England, New Zealand Tests after knee injury

Pakistan's qudrat crashes in the face of England's calculation

'Hurt' Babar rues Shaheen injury, admits Pakistan '20 runs short'

“There were stages, especially with the bat where we could have finished the innings really well. Personally, I take blame for it. I thought that we’re aiming for 170 and having looked at how the innings ended, maybe we could have used with a batsman staying until the end and getting us to 155-160 which looked very good on a pitch that did something.”The pitch continued to “do something”, as Masood said, right through the second innings. Shaheen Shah Afridi shaped one in that cleaned up Alex Hales in the first over, while Naseem Shah repeatedly beat both the left and right handers’ outside edges in a sensational, albeit luckless, spell.”With the ball, we were bowling some really really good deliveries, some very good spells, but maybe we also gave a few runs away too many early on which we could have done without,” he said. “At the end in that crucial period where we lost Shaheen, we could have done with his two overs at the end.”We’re a bit disappointed. We couldn’t seal it in the crucial moments. England were very good in those crucial moments. I thought they came at us both with the bat and the ball.”Haris Rauf ended up with figures of 2 for 23 and was particularly fearsome early on, ensuring Phil Salt and Jos Buttler had been dismissed before the powerplay was out. The spell was central to Pakistan managing to make a low target as hairy as they did for England, though Rauf rued the lack of another 15 runs or so to defend.”We were short a few runs, but as a bowling unit, we stuck to our plans,” Rauf said. “They played well and deserved to win. We had control of the match until the Shaheen injury. Ben Stokes was quite lucky and kept missing the outside edge, but we did think Shaheen not being able to bowl out make a difference. I’ve played a lot of cricket at the MCG and everyone knows scoring runs here is tricky; the boundaries are big. If we had 150 on the total, that would have posed more questions to them. But we bowled well to take it so close.”A campaign that had begun with two final-ball losses ended with a defeat in the final game for Pakistan. Four wins and three defeats might not necessarily be runner-up form, but Masood pointed out the nature of the wins and losses revealed a more insightful picture of Pakistan’s campaign.Shan Masood made a 28-ball 38 in the T20 World Cup final•Cameron Spencer/Getty Images

“I think we can sum it up with the wins and losses. I think the games that we have won, we’ve won them pretty comfortably. And the good sign always is that when you lose, you lose close games. So you realise that those things are in your own hands. The three games we lost to India, Zimbabwe and even the final there were opportunities where we could have closed out those games.”You make mistakes, not just when you lose you also make mistakes when you win. So I think the side is very good at doing that. The side is very good at holding itself accountable. We played the World Cup semi-final last year, lost a close semi final, played the Asia Cup final and the World Cup final.
