New Sunderland boss must sell underperformer who earns more than Bellingham

da bet sport: Sunderland are still on the hunt for their next manager, with it feeling like an eternity since they last had a permanent boss in the dugout.

da bet7k: Mike Dodds was only in the Black Cats hot seat on an interim basis, and as the rumour mill continues to churn out names that could be the next permanent boss on Wearside, there seems to be no near ending available yet to bring this ongoing saga to a close.

Whoever does take over the reins from Dodds when an announcement is finally out in the open will have their work cut out, with this dud potentially one for the chopping block straight away, after offering very little for Sunderland this campaign just finished.

Patrick Roberts' season in numbers

Patrick Roberts certainly didn't set the world alight last season for Sunderland, unable to be as dangerous and as penetrative as Jack Clarke was down the wings, with lacklustre performances becoming commonplace from the former Manchester City forward.

Roberts wouldn't even score a single goal in Championship action from 32 appearances tallied up, blown out of the water by his counterpart down the left flank, as Clarke bagged a ridiculous 15 goals.

Sunderland winger Patrick Roberts.

This could result in Roberts potentially being let go of this summer, with the 27-year-old only providing two assists down the wings as well, which was bettered as a total by Abdoullah Ba who finished his season with four, who could now be the preferred option down Roberts' flank for the long-term.

Plagued with recurring injuries throughout his career too, the time could be right to cut ties with the inconsistent attacker this summer, with a new Sunderland manager coming in and operating with a cut-throat approach to get rid of some frustrating duds who have, arguably, overstayed their welcome in the camp.

With his sketchy injury track record easier to swallow when he was on top form during his Celtic days, as can be seen glancing at the table above, the powers that be at the Stadium of Light will also be put off keeping Roberts around based off his excessive wage, which sees him currently rake in nearly double Jobe Bellingham's pay packet.

Roberts' wage at Sunderland

The 27-year-old's position at Sunderland is on even more thin ice when you consider his salary currently sits at a hefty £12.5k-per-week, with other more important first-team performers from last season earning less.

Jobe Bellingham is the most striking example, earning nearly half that of the Sunderland number ten at £6.5k-per-week, despite picking up eight goal contributions last season to Roberts' meagre two, resulting in interested parties from the Premier League now circling for the 18-year-old.

Getting such a high earner off the books in Roberts could mean that the wage bill is readjusted to keep Bellingham at Sunderland for longer, with far more attractive and tantalising offers on the table presumably.

The likes of Trai Hume and Pierre Ekwah will also be clamouring for wage increases, with the duo earning just £3k-per-week each, despite playing more games than Roberts this season just gone, at 47 and 43 appearances respectively.

The next Sunderland boss could, therefore, ruffle a few feathers by ditching Roberts for good, with the 27-year-old becoming a part of the furniture over the last few seasons by amassing 97 games in total.

Yet, fresh off such a forgettable campaign, all sentimentality could be thrown out of the window as the out-of-sorts winger looks for a new club to call home.

Chris Gayle's onslaught gives West Indies series win

He smashed seven sixes and four fours in his 38-ball 67

So, those questions about Chris Gayle’s form. The opener put on a thunderous display, with his first T20I half-century since 2016, to secure a series victory for West Indies as he pummelled the Australia attack around St Lucia in what became a cakewalk of a chase.Having made 102 runs in nine innings since his recall earlier this year, Gayle launched seven sixes in an innings that took him past 14,000 T20 runs. After he departed, stand-in captain Nicholas Pooran ensured there was no hiccup in the chase he closed it out with more than five overs to spare. It is the first time West Indies have won a bilateral series (or more than one match) against Australia in any format since 1995.Australia had made three changes – two enforced by injury to Ben McDermott and Ashton Agar – and changed tact by opting to bat first when Aaron Finch again won the toss, but it was a laboured effort after some initial momentum in the powerplay. Moises Henriques and the recalled Ashton Turner added 59 but it took almost eight overs.Watch cricket on ESPN+

West Indies v Australia is available in the US on ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the match.

West Indies were excellent with the ball despite Obed McCoy being able to bowl only one over. Fabian Allen and Hayden Walsh Jr, who took his series tally to eight wickets, bowled their eight overs for 44. Allen also took a spectacular rebound catch in the deep to remove Finch in a display that further enhanced his fielding credentials. The Wade, Finch contrast
The struggle for the majority of Australia’s innings is highlighted by the fact that they had a useful 41 off the first five overs. That was largely down to Matthew Wade who again struck the ball sweetly as he did in the opening match of the series. However, with some of the issues being faced by other batters, Australia needed him to make the most of those starts and kick on but he departed when he missed a slower ball from McCoy. His opening partner is finding things aren’t quite coming out of the middle at the moment and Finch never got his timing during a run-a-ball stay where he was often losing his shapes on shots. He eventually fell to a worldie of a catch, completed by Allen at deep midwicket who remained magnificently alert when Dwayne Bravo missed the initial chance, and hurled himself low to the ground to grab it.Fabian Allen was brilliantly alert to hold rebound catch•AFP

Walsh does it again
The Finch wicket was Walsh’s second of the innings as he again did a terrific job, this time also bringing notable economy to his four overs. Pooran had held back his spinners – the match was a rare example of all the powerplay play overs being bowled by seamers of various descriptions – and when they were introduced Australia struggled to up the tempo. Allen removed the in-form Mitchell Marsh when he missed a sweep and Walsh claimed his first by ending a lively start from Alex Carey who had reverse-swept his first ball of the series for four. The spinners, which included one over from Gayle, did not concede a single six as Australia only cleared the boundary twice – both hits coming from Henriques.Gayle’s reminder
Gayle arrived for the fourth ball of the chase after Mitchell Starc, who bowled excellently after two expensive outings, had Andre Fletcher taken at midwicket. He saw out the over from Starc but then things got lively. When he got on strike to Josh Hazlewood’s first over he went 6, 4, 4, 4. There was a look in his eye of a batter on a mission. He was measured too but after a brief period of more sedate play, he deposited Adam Zampa for a straight six and followed it up in the 11th over with three consecutive sixes against the legspinner, the third of which took him to a 33-ball half-century. He saved the biggest for a huge leg-side blow off Riley Meredith that was followed by another the next ball before a top edge ended the show. Five of the last seven deliveries he faced cleared the rope. The match and the series were done and dusted.

Approach made: £5,500-p/w player now open to signing for Leeds from rivals

da bet nacional: A Leeds United transfer target is believed to be “open” to moving to Elland Road on a season-long loan this summer.

Leeds transfer rumours

da doce: The 49ers Enterprises have already secured an off-field deal with Red Bull ahead of the 2024/25 season, with preparations ongoing behind the scenes in regards to Daniel Farke’s squad for next season.

The Whites will be playing in the Championship once again after a playoff final defeat to Southampton last month, which could result in the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto leaving Elland Road.

The Whites are keen to reinforce their ranks ahead of potential departures.

However, there are likely to be incomings as well, with Fulham’s Bobby Decordova-Reid one attacker who has been linked with a move to Yorkshire, possibly to replace one of Summerville or Gnonto.

Another Premier League player who is wanted by Leeds is Chelsea defender Alfie Gilchrist, and a new positive update has emerged.

Alfie Gilchrist “open” to Leeds loan move

Journalist Ben Jacobs, who first shared Leeds’ interest in Gilchrist, has now provided more details about a potential transfer. Talking to the Just Joe Football Show, relayed by Leeds United News, Jacobs is “sure” Gilchrist will end up at a Championship club, adding that the defender is “open” to an Elland Road move after a “formative approach” from Leeds.

“The feeling is he will be loaned out to a Championship club, that’s the plan and the player’s intent. It’s very unlikely in the position he plays that Chelsea will think otherwise, the only question mark is when in the window as sometimes clubs like Chelsea want to take the player over to pre-season first.

“I am sure in the coming weeks he will end up at a Championship club, but it might be more like late July or early August because of what I said. You’ve got Leeds, Preston and Blackburn as the clubs who have made a formative approach.

“To all intents and purposes Gilchrist would be open to a Leeds move. He has great respect, Chelsea and Leeds have a great rivalry but nonetheless, he would go there. He would be very willing to help Leeds fight and get promoted.”

Gilchrist, on £5,500-a-week at Stamford Bridge, made 17 senior appearances for Chelsea last season, one of which came against Leeds in the FA Cup fifth round. The 20-year-old can play as a centre-back or a full-back and turned out as a left-back against the Whites. He also came in for praise from John Terry late last year, who called Gilchrist a “really good player” who has “an unbelievable attitude”.

"Alfie Gilchrist, he's a really, really good player. He's got an unbelievable attitude. He's been at the club since the age of eight… I'm expecting big things from Alf, expecting him to play hopefully a game or two as the season goes on."

A move could be one to keep an eye on over the coming weeks, especially following those latest comments from Jacobs.

Russell Domingo wants Bangladesh to lift ODI scoring rates in search for overseas success

Head coach wants “one or two big away wins” to bolster his side’s confidence

Mohammad Isam30-May-2021

Bangladesh have lost five out of seven away ODI series since April 2015•AFP/Getty Images

Bangladesh coach Russell Domingo believes that the next step for his team should be to find success overseas. He wants them to adjust their strategies, particularly their scoring pattern, to foreign conditions and start by winning “one or two big games”.”The big challenge for this ODI team is to try to win away from home under different conditions,” Domingo told ESPNcricinfo. “They are a very good team in Bangladesh. I think if we can get that confidence going away from home, it will be a big thing. I think playing away from home, we need to win one or two big games. Once you get the confidence and belief that you can do it, that will put the team in a much better place mentally.”Bangladesh’s recent 2-1 win over Sri Lanka was their tenth ODI series win at home out of the last 11 such engagements going back to 2015. However, the picture is very different when playing ODIs – perhaps their favourite format – away from home. They have the best win-loss ratio at home since April 2015 (minimum 20 ODIs played), but among the worst away win-loss ratios in the same period. This, a result of Bangladesh having lost five out of seven away ODI series in this period, their only win coming against West Indies in 2018 after tying the series against Sri Lanka the previous year.Domingo wants all-round improvement in skills to win outside of Bangladesh more consistently. “There’s a certain bit of up-skilling that needs to take place with bat and ball,” he said. “People need to improve in various departments to make sure they can win some games away from home. This team has won away from home in other conditions but to challenge them to win in those conditions is something that the team needs to embrace and take it forward.”Top among Domingo’s priorities would be improving his side’s scoring rate. Bangladesh have an average of 238 runs in the 38 ODIs at home since April 2015, which goes up to 248 at a run rate of 5.68 in their 29 wins. There is a marginal difference in their average scoring away from home, with the figure going up to 241, but when they win abroad, that shoots up to 269 runs at a run rate of 6.13. Thus, Domingo says, Bangladesh must look to score 300-plus regularly to be at par with the teams ranked above them in ODIs.”I am not at all concerned by the number of runs we are scoring in Dhaka,” he says. “You can only score as much as the wickets allow you sometimes. Not many times teams get 300 in Dhaka. Definitely when you are playing away from home, 230s or 240s are not going to win you many games. We have to be able to challenge ourselves, play expansively to get up to 300 and 350. It is of paramount importance in the modern game.”To get to those scores, Bangladesh would need to change their approach. Their over-reliance on the four senior batters – Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah – remains unsustainable in any conditions; particularly when playing abroad, 300-plus can’t be managed by relying on just this quartet every game.Russell Domingo has called for patience with young players like Afif Hossain•Getty Images

Liton Das was recently dropped for the third ODI against Sri Lanka after averaging 12.62 in his last eight innings, while both Soumya Sarkar and Mohammad Mithun haven’t been consistent in the last three years either. Also during the ODIs against Sri Lanka, Mosaddek Hossain and Afif Hossain couldn’t capitalise on opportunities. However, Domingo isn’t giving up on any of them and has instead appealed for patience.”The younger players have shown some glimpses and positive signs, but it would be good to see them perform a bit more consistently,” he said. “A guy like Afif has only played three [four] ODIs, so it is very hard to judge. You have to be patient with them, and they can learn a lot from the older players. I hate to put them under severe scrutiny and pressure. They are trying to find their feet at this level.”Domingo said while the current group of senior batters in the side are, as a bunch, at par with some of the best batting groups in the world, even those four accomplished batters took a bit of time to get accustomed to international cricket.”Obviously, it would be great if they started producing runs in every single game,” he added. “All teams rely heavily on their senior players to perform. India has Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli. England has [Joe] Root, [Jos] Buttler and [Ben] Stokes who are big players. The responsibility comes with the older players.”If you go through examples, you think so many of our big-game players like Tamim, Mushfiq [Rahim] and Shakib, they also took a bit of time initially to find their feet in international cricket. Some of the wickets in Dhaka are not easy for batting. It has taken Mushfiq and Shakib a little bit of time to figure out what’s the best way to play in these conditions.”Related

'We won the series but don't think we played really well' – Tamim

Mental tweaks help Mushfiqur Rahim deliver consistency

Stats – The many rescue acts of Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah

On the upside, Bangladesh’s bowling has improved, with three other bowlers – Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed – now giving Shakib the support he needs. Mehidy, among the younger and the lesser-experienced lot, just climbed to No. 2 in the ICC ODI bowling rankings.”I am really pleased for Mehidy. He is getting recognised for his consistent performances,” Domingo said. “He is a wonderful team guy. He always has a smile on his face. He is willing to do whatever it takes to put the team in a better position.”Bangladesh’s next ODI assignment will be against Zimbabwe, where they will be playing three ODIs in July. The Harare Sports Club, the venue of those matches, has an average score of 201 batting first, thus requiring a different type of adjustment for the side. After Zimbabwe, they also face England, Afghanistan, South Africa and Ireland in their remaining ICC ODI Super League matches, sides that would again test them differently.Hoping to consistently successfully defend around 240 against teams such as these, or being given targets of around 250, seems increasingly outdated thinking. They have done really well to become a huge threat at home but, to be counted among the global game’s top sides, Bangladesh must look to bolder strategies on foreign shores.
