He's like Dibling: Everton looking at signing "special" £35m English star

Everton enter the new Premier League season with a clear priority: finding a dynamic winger capable of slotting straight into David Moyes’ starting lineup.

The club’s summer so far has been a mix of arrivals and departures as Moyes attempts to reshape the squad after a campaign that saw the team rise to mid-table after a tough start.

Already this summer, Everton have strengthened multiple positions.

Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers has arrived to act as a back-up to England No.1 Jordan Pickford, while Carlos Alcaraz’s loan from Flamengo was made permanent.

Forward Thierno Barry joins with the potential to develop into a key attacking contributor.

However, undoubtedly the most high-profile arrival is Jack Grealish, the England international acquired on loan from Manchester City, whose creativity could immediately influence games at Goodison Park.

Everton assessing Dibling alternative

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Abdoulaye Doucouré, and Ashley Young have all departed on free transfers after their contracts expired, leaving gaps in the squad that need addressing.

This, coupled with Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom returning to their parent clubs, leaves the wide areas somewhat thin.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

This has made Moyes’ pursuit of a new wide attacker an urgent priority, especially one capable of taking defenders on, creating scoring opportunities, and contributing goals himself.

According to BBC Reporter Giulia Bould, Everton are “now looking” at 21-year-old England U21 international Omari Hutchinson, following their unsuccessful pursuit of Southampton’s Tyler Dibling.

Hutchinson, described by Chelsea insider Felix Johnstone as a “special talent,” made 31 Premier League appearances last season, scoring three goals and registering two assists in 2,593 minutes of action.

Hutchinson moved to Ipswich on a permanent deal in 2024 for around £20m and has quickly emerged as one of the most promising young attacking talents in England, now valued at £35m by his club.

Capped ten times at U21 level, he was part of the England squad that won a second consecutive U21 European Championship in Slovakia, highlighting his pedigree on the international stage.

This interest in Hutchinson comes after Everton’s protracted and ultimately stalled negotiations with Southampton over Tyler Dibling.

The 19-year-old English winger, highly rated for his ability to take defenders on and create opportunities, has attracted attention from Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Bayern Munich.

Southampton’s valuation of £45m plus £5m in add-ons and a 25% sell-on clause, however, has proven prohibitive.

Southampton's TylerDiblingin action with AFC Bournemouth's Dean Huijsen

Dibling has been training away from the first team and is expected to hold talks with the club regarding his future imminently.

Hutchinson provides Everton with a potential alternative who offers many of the same attributes that made Dibling so appealing.

Comparing the two: Dibling vs Hutchinson

Versatile across multiple positions, Hutchinson combines technical ability and creativity, making him a constant threat.

Statistically, Dibling and Hutchinson offer intriguing points of comparison.

While both operate primarily as wingers, their playing profiles differ slightly.

Dibling is more defensively engaged, drawing 2.44 fouls per 90 minutes compared to Hutchinson’s 1.54 and recording more tackles in the midfield third (0.91 versus 0.56).

Southampton's Tyler Dibling celebrates scoring their first goal with Southampton'sKyleWalker-Peters

He also successfully tackles a higher percentage of dribblers (63% versus 28.7%) and blocks more shots per 90 minutes (0.24 versus 0.09).

These numbers suggest a player more willing to contribute defensively, capable of pressing and disrupting opposition attacks.

Hutchinson, in contrast, shows a slightly stronger attacking output in certain areas.

He attempts 4.77 take-ons per 90 minutes, completing 1.89, compared with Dibling’s 5.36 attempts and 2.20 successes.

While Dibling may be more aggressive in duels, Hutchinson’s dribbling style is composed and creative, often unlocking defences with skilful movement rather than sheer physicality.

He brings vision and a sharp understanding of space, traits that could complement Everton’s midfield and forward lines.

Beyond the statistics, both players offer flexibility.

Hutchinson’s ability to operate on either wing, as an inverted winger or in more central attacking roles, mirrors Dibling’s versatility and makes him a valuable asset in Moyes’ tactical system.

Everton’s desire for a winger capable of contributing immediately, both in terms of goals and creativity, makes Hutchinson a compelling alternative after the club’s inability to secure Dibling.

Ultimately, Everton appear to have identified Hutchinson as a player who combines, albeit limited Premier League experience, youth international credentials, and attacking quality within a budget-friendly framework.

Ipswich Town'sOmariHutchinsonreacts

With departures leaving the wide areas depleted, Moyes’ pursuit of a winger who can replicate Dibling’s potential impact is logical, offering the team a creative spark capable of changing games in the early stages of the season.

Everton’s opening fixture against Leeds at Elland Road offers an early opportunity for Moyes to integrate any new wide attacker and immediately benefit from a player capable of stretching defences, creating chances, and contributing directly to goals.

As the transfer window continues, Hutchinson’s arrival could signal Everton’s intent to compete more aggressively, restore attacking dynamism, and provide Moyes with the tactical options required to challenge for higher Premier League positions.

Jadon Sancho has rejected a move to Roma with uncertainty over the Manchester United outcast's future now set to drag on late into the window. The winger had been stalling on a decision over the transfer despite Roma reaching an agreement with the Red Devils on a loan deal with an option to buy worth around £20 million (€25m/$29m).

According to various reports, Sancho has turned down Roma’s offer after a deal was struck between the Italian club and United over a loan with an option to buy. The 25-year-old has also made it clear he will not be joining Besiktas, removing another potential destination from the table. This leaves both suitors and also the Red Devils frustrated as they seek to finalise a late summer exit for the outcast.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sancho remains under contract with United until next summer and his wages continue to pose a stumbling block for interested clubs, limiting his options in the market. The England winger’s reluctance to move suggests he is holding out for a project that better matches his ambitions.

Kevin De Bruyne and Luka Modric transfers show Serie A is 'an elephant graveyard' as Paolo Di Canio casts doubt on Man City and Real Madrid legends

Former Serie A forward Paolo Di Canio believes the Italian top-flight has become a place for iconic players to arrive after they are past their prime.

  • Di Canio provides verdict on Modric and De Bruyne arrivals
  • Former forward not sure if they can sustain their level
  • Admitted that the duo will definitely bring a lot of quality

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Di Canio, a veteran of Serie A who played for teams like Lazio, Juventus, Napoli and AC Milan, is not too sold on the arrivals of legendary midfield duo De Bruyne and Modric. While the former striker admitted that they will bring a lot of quality to Italy, he remains sceptical about whether they can sustain their performance at the highest levels.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Modric left Real Madrid as their most decorated player of all-time, winning 28 titles in 13 years. He also broke the Ballon d'Or duopoly of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo by lifting the award in 2018. On the other hand, De Bruyne etched his name in Manchester City folklore after a glorious decade at the Etihad Stadium. He became one of the greatest midfielders in Premier League history, helping the club win the Champions League in 2023 as well as six league titles.

Modric and De Bruyne, though, are well past their primes. The Croatian will turn 40 next month, while the Belgian turned 34 in June. While players such as Axel Witsel have claimed that the duo will battle it out for the title of the best midfielder in Serie A, Di Canio thinks otherwise.

  • WHAT PAOLO DI CANIO SAID

Speaking on , Di Canio said: "The outlook is twofold: Italy continues to be an elephant's graveyard; before it was [Cristiano] Ronaldo and [Franck] Ribery, now it's De Bruyne and Modric."

He later on clarified that he has no doubts about the qualities of De Bruyne and Modric, but is doubtful about them making an impact on a consistent basis. He said: "They are [top players], of course. Meanwhile, I wonder how many games they can play at a high level, but above all, how much of their quality and technique will be absorbed by their teammates. It's difficult to imitate someone so unique. I mean, they can't do it alone if there's no team capable of circulating well around them. We'll certainly enjoy their quality, but those around them need to quickly learn to understand who they're playing with. Modric is a leader who knows how to communicate with the team: Milan will benefit from that, in a season where they only have the league."

De Bruyne, meanwhile, will play his first official game for Napoli on August 23, in the opening game of Serie A against Sassuolo.

Ex-Tottenham employee says 18-goal forward could be tempted to join Ange

A former Tottenham Hotspur scout has claimed that a forward with 18 goals this season could be tempted to link up with Ange Postecoglou this summer.

Even though Spurs have the option to make Timo Werner's deal permanent for around £15 million, as widely reported, it remains the case that the Lilywhites are eager to bring in more fresh faces going forward.

Technical director Johan Lange and co are expected to bring in a player who can contribute in terms of goals and assists, as revealed by Fabrizio Romano late last month, with there being many names under consideration.

Genoa star Albert Gudmundsson continues to be heavily linked with Tottenham ahead of the summer window, coming amid his excellent season in Serie A, and his links with defender Radu Dragusin could well help to sweeten any potential deal.

The former teammates also share the same agency, and perhaps Spurs' fruitful business relationship with Genoa makes a move for Gudmundsson one to watch.

In terms of asking price, the Iceland international is rumoured to command a price tag of around £26 million, which will come as enticing for Postecoglou's side as they look to strengthen multiple areas when the window reopens.

Valuations will be a crucial component of any Tottenham transfer, with chairman Daniel Levy having to consider the cost of any deal before pursuing it.

Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy.

Stars of this Championship season may also be turning heads at Spurs in this regard, as some of the division's star players could well depart for what would be seen as affordable fees for an elite English side like Spurs.

While Leeds United are contending for promotion back to the top flight, it is believed their standout forward, Crysencio Summerville, has ended up on Tottenham's radar.

Indeed, Spurs are said to be keeping tabs on Summerville following his excellent 2023/2024, where he has bagged a brilliant 18 goals and nine assists in all competitions for Daniel Farke's side as they fight for a Premier League place next term.

Ex-Tottenham employee claims Summerville may be tempted by Spurs move

Speaking to Tottenham News, former Spurs scout Bryan King has claimed that Summerville could be tempted to join Spurs if they make a big-money offer for him.

Crysencio Summerville for Leeds United.

“Would Leeds want to sell Summerville? If they are going to get promoted to the Premier League they will need all the help that they can get," said King.

“But for Summerville, if a club like Tottenham come in and offer the money they can offer, that would be very hard for him to turn down. It would be a step up for him though, scoring 17 goals in the Championship is one thing but scoring 17 goals in the Premier League is something else.”

Former Man United midfielder Tom Cleverley has called Summerville the Championship's "best player" this season, and rumour has it he'd cost around £30 million.

DRS to make maiden appearance in a women's bilateral series in England during West Indies tour

“I think potentially not having it (reviews) affects the spectacle of the game,” says Heather Knight

Matt Roller20-Sep-2020The Decision Review System (DRS) will be available in a women’s bilateral series in England for the first time during West Indies’ tour, with the five-match T20I series starting Monday. The technology was available throughout the last two T20 World Cups, and in the ten televised games in the 50-over World Cup in 2017, but has only occasionally been used outside of them in women’s cricket. New Zealand used the technology in their series against India at the start of 2019 and against South Africa in early 2020, with India captain Mithali Raj critical of the “irregular” use of the system in the women’s game and calling for its permanent introduction.Last summer, both teams in the women’s Ashes called for DRS to be introduced in bilateral internationals after England batter Fran Wilson was incorrectly given out lbw in the first ODI, with replays showing that the ball had hit her glove rather than her pad.ALSO READ: How can women’s cricket learn to use DRS better?“You always want the best as players, and DRS is the best,” Heather Knight, England’s captain, said. “I’d imagine the reason, as usual in women’s cricket, is money, as to why we don’t have it.”I think potentially not having it affects the spectacle of the game. Sometimes decisions go your way and it’s obviously the same for both sides but in an ideal world we would have DRS.”Matthew Mott, the Australia coach, said, “I must admit I think if you’ve got the technology there and you’ve got enough cameras, it should come in. It certainly makes sense for me to have it if we can.”Under the ICC’s playing conditions, the use of DRS in women’s internationals is at the discretion of the participating boards, as is the case in men’s internationals.England’s series against West Indies begins on Monday, with all five T20Is being played behind closed doors at Derby. Both sides will have two reviews available per innings, in all five matches.1140, September 21 – This story was updated to reflect the use of technology in New Zealand’s home series

"Very likely" – Agent drops Osimhen clue amid Arsenal and Chelsea interest

An Italian agent has shared what he knows about the future of Victor Osimhen amid links to Premier League giants Chelsea and Arsenal.

Osimhen in hot demand

Both London clubs are keen on Nigeria star Osimhen this summer, as the Napoli man seems set to leave Italy come the end of the season. The Gunners are on the hunt for a new striker following another injury-hit season for Gabriel Jesus, which has seen them forced to use both Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz as their no.9 at various points through the season.

Though they have scored the most goals of any English top flight side this season, there is obviously a gap at the top of the pitch for Mikel Arteta's side which needs filling, and it is expected to be a priority this summer amid continued expectation that Eddie Nketiah will leave the club.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are crying out for a goalscorer. Though Nicolas Jackson shows plenty of promise, he is far from clinical and the Blues have suffered as a result this season, currently sitting 12th in the Premier League and staring down the barrel of another season with no European football at Stamford Bridge, just three years after they were crowned European champions in Porto.

It is largely their inability in front of goal that has stopped the Blues progressing up the table this season, despite Mauricio Pochettino's assertion that "if you look at all the data, in the table we should be in fourth position".

Osimhen decision may already be made

According to Italian agent Dario Canovi, who represents Bologna boss Thiago Motta, Osimhen will turn down Premier League interest in order to make a move back to France and turn out for Paris Saint Germain, who are on the hunt for a talismanic figure to replace Real Madrid bound Kylian Mbappe.

Napoli strikerVictor Osimhen.

“In my view, it is very likely he will play for Paris Saint-Germain,” Canovi told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli. “It would be the smartest signing to replace Kylian Mbappé, who has been a Real Madrid player for months and it’s a farce that they are trying to avoid telling us.”

It would be an odd choice for the Parisians, who signed striking pair Goncalo Ramos and Randal Kolo-Muani just last summer. But, with a release clause in Osimhen's contract reportedly set at 130m euros (£111m), it could become a formality for whoever activates that clause.

It has been a poor season for Napoli, but the Nigerian has remained a bright spark. The 25-year-old has struck 11 goals and grabbed 3 assists in just 18 Serie A outings, and will forever be remembered fondly for helping deliver the title to Naples last season for the first time since Diego Maradona graced the Italian side.

INEOS, it is reported, view the defensive midfielder as an ideal prospective target, but they are said to be unlikely to meet the Seagulls' valuation in this window, as they operate within tighter financial constraints. They have already signed Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko for a combined total of more than £200 million ($271.5m) this summer.

Mark Wood working on wobble seam while on sidelines for England

Quick hopes says he would have been fit to play if selected for second Test

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Aug-2020Mark Wood has been spending his time on the sidelines of England’s Test campaigns against West Indies and Pakistan perfecting a new delivery in an attempt to boost his armoury when he returns to action.Wood has not played since the first Test against West Indies at the Ageas Bowl in early July, when he finished with match figures of 2 for 110.Despite bruising his foot while training in Manchester, scene of the last two Tests against West Indies and the first against Pakistan, Wood said he would have been able to play in ongoing match, back in Southampton, if selected.ALSO READ: England a ‘litle bit disappointed’ not to bowl Pakistan out – Broad“I’m trying to work on some wobble seams at the moment,” Wood told Sky Sports. “When you’re learning something new, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.”You feel a million dollars when you get it right, but when you don’t quite get it you keep trying to strive for perfection, I guess, so something I’m working on and something that hope that I can use in a game soon.”Wood may have been keen to experiment in Southampton, with the ball moving plenty under heavy, damp skies.
