'Want an argument for reviews? Put Harper on the field'

England seethed after they found Daryl Harper hadn’t heard a nick off Graeme Smith’s bat because the volume on his system was not turned up

Cricinfo staff18-Jan-2010″I am not surprised he didn’t hear it, because he didn’t turn the volume up on his speaker. I find it strange if you are listening for a nick you don’t turn the volume up on your speaker.”
“It’s not my job to discuss what the third umpire heard. We all knew what technology was available in this series, so to be crying over spilt milk now is not right.”
“If the audio level had been increased above its optimum level, distortion on the audio feed would have occurred and the feed might not have given a clear indication of the true sound.”
“Until the technology is applied correctly we are better off with our oldest method. If the umpire is as deaf as a post and as blind as a bat, at least it’s the same for both sides.”
“If you want an argument in favour of the review system, put Harper on the field; if you want an argument against the system, put Harper in the third umpire’s booth.”
“There is room for further improvement in the available technology and this investigation will be conducted in that light so the system becomes even more reliable.”
“The review system is a little clunky… but the game is better for new technology and that will become more obvious in due course.”
The “It’s a pity there’s no ‘Snicko’, which would have given Harper another means of checking. Hotspot isn’t being used here as there are only a couple of pieces of available equipment in the world that do the job and both are booked.”
“This is why FIFA and UEFA have served the game well by resisting demands for a referral system and “goalline technology”.”

Pundit slams "disappointing" £35m Tottenham regular who Levy should’ve sold

A £35 million Tottenham regular in Ange Postecoglou's squad has been criticised, with one pundit believing chairman Daniel Levy should've sold him during the summer window.

Spurs enjoy productive summer window as four signings arrive

Spurs enjoyed a rather productive summer window, spending around £113 million on four key senior new additions in a season-long loan extension for Timo Werner, striker Dominic Solanke, the arrival of English sensation Archie Gray and a move for winger Wilson Odobert.

This doesn't include their deals for youngster Lucas Bergvall and South Korean wonderkid Min-hyeok Yang, who also sealed switches to north London for a further fee of around £12 million.

Levy, technical director Johan Lange and the wider Lilywhites recruitment team will be thrilled with their business overall, especially bringing in one of the country's most highly-rated talents in Gray whilst signing proven Premier League striker Solanke.

Tottenham also managed to rid themselves of deadwood at the eleventh hour, with wantaway midfielder Giovani Lo Celso sealing a last-gasp return to former club Real Betis in La Liga.

A condition of that deal is Spurs getting first refusal on a potential future move for USA international midfielder Johnny Cardoso, who the club must rate very highly if he was floated in talks over Lo Celso.

While Tottenham were reportedly offered a late chance to sign Josh Brownhill from Burnley, Postecoglou's side ultimately settled on their incomings for the window.

In terms of further outgoings after Lo Celso, it is believed left-back Sergio Reguilon was subject to late interest from abroad, but Spurs couldn't quite agree a deal to offload the Spaniard with his immediate future now up in the air.

The 27-year-old could still leave, as prominent transfer windows abroad are still open. Indeed, the Turkish, Portuguese and Dutch markets don't close until early September – and neither does the Saudi market.

Pundit slams "disappointing" Bissouma, insists Spurs should've sold

It is probably too late in the day for Yves Bissouma, though, as Spurs cannot source a replacement with the UK window shut.

Pundit John Wenham, speaking to Tottenham News before the deadline, said that Tottenham should've sold Bissouma and brought in a replacement during the summer – branding the £35 million Mali international a "disappointing" and "underwhelming" player under Postecoglou.

“If there is an option to replace Bissouma with a different midfielder, Spurs should do it,” Wenham said.

Yves Bissouma scores for Tottenham

“What has he done since joining the club? He has been quite underwhelming. We haven’t seen anything like the Bissouma we saw at Brighton who would run the show against us when he played.

“On the whole, he has been a disappointing signing.”

Since arriving at N17 two years ago, Bissouma has gone on to make 57 appearances in all competitions, only recently scoring his first goal for the club last weekend against Everton.

A win born of belief

Sri Lanka know that in tournament cricket gut feel plays a key role. It worked for them against England.

Andrew Fidel Fernando at The Oval14-Jun-2013Everywhere Sri Lanka go now, their captains are asked the same question. “Those three big names in your top four, all over 35 – aren’t they getting past it now?” Four months into his leadership, Angelo Mathews already trots out clichés about class being permanent. Perhaps after the old hands set the night alight at the Oval, those doubts will abate for a time. What Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan have secured for Sri Lanka is not just two points on the table, but the mighty tide that has turned for them at world events. This time, though, there is little doubt their run began in the loss to New Zealand.Somewhere during that searing Malinga spell in Cardiff, there was a spark, and Sri Lanka ignited. There is no other way to explain how a batting unit that succumbed for 138 on a decent pitch can scale a mountain so emphatically against the hosts a few days later. Having gone so deep, so many times, Sri Lanka understand tournament cricket. They know a clean sheet of wins or a trunk-full of form for this key man or that one do not mean so much as the feeling in their gut, and they have latched on to belief and wrestled it into their cricket. In the last World Twenty20, Lahiru Thirimanne’s scoop off Tim Southee to tie the first Super Eights match set the dressing room ablaze. Five years before that, Malinga’s four in four was their World Cup elixir. They rarely appear likely victors coming in, but when the gears begin to turn, the group uncovers a spirit that eludes them outside of major competition, and the unlikely gems begin to cluster together. Nuwan Kulasekara is popular far beyond his talent at home, and having walloped his first fifty in a Sri Lanka win, a nation will swoon when they awake to the scorecard. A cleverer pinch-hitting innings is difficult to recall.”If Kulasekara’s promotion didn’t work, I think the team would have been torn to shreds,” Sangakkara said. “Angelo would have taken a lot of stick and criticism saying what was he doing and what were the coaches thinking. But when it does work it’s fantastic. Decisions like that can go both ways. I thought it was really strong of Angelo and the coaching staff to have taken that position. It was easy for [Kulasekara] to come and try and hit every ball, but he batted sensibly through Powerplay and then accelerated right after.”It might have been easy to reason that a blazing start was the only route to success against one of the best attacks in the competition, but Sri Lanka’s experienced batsmen banked on belief over desperation throughout their chase, rarely giving in to daring. The early overs were defined by care, at least after Kusal Perera had perished. Sangakkara and Dilshan exploited the poor balls on a true pitch, but gave respect when the bowling demanded it. James Anderson’s first five overs went for 15 and they had only made 48 by the end of the mandatory Powerplay. Sri Lanka bat deeper now than they have for much of their ODI history and today they trusted the hitters in the middle would provide a late surge.Jayawardene’s innings was wrought from trust as well, but in himself. In the 2011 World Cup he spoke of the belief his semi-final hundred four years earlier had bestowed – that he was a big-game, high-pressure performer. He might not have pleasant memories about the outcome of that final, but his innings in it was perhaps the best in the tournament. At the Oval, he defied a bouncy pitch and a sharp attack with the reverse-sweeps and swivel-pulls that are the foundation of his limited-overs batting, but are not always an advisable path to prosperity in English conditions. His innings proved a busy link between Sri Lanka’s base and their final flourish.Sangakkara was unwilling to label this one his best ODI knock, but for a man who does not always play his big innings in Sri Lanka wins, his second-highest one-day score must rank among the sweetest. Under pressure from the first ball, he undid England with nerveless, chanceless calculation. Jayawardene breathes cricket, but Sangakkara thinks it better than most who have played the game. At times he scored at a manic rate, and occasionally he played uncharacteristic strokes, yet nothing in his innings seemed rushed or improvised. A meticulous man of method, and now the first Sri Lankan batsman who might finish his ODI career with an average over 40, he eased the top order’s burden early on, and engineered a shift in the tone of the match.”It was really important for us to take momentum going back into the dressing room, but I think Bopara really managed to put some extra pressure on us by scoring 28 of the last over,” Sangakkara said. “What would have been 270 suddenly became 293, and that’s a big margin. But it’s a do‑or‑die situation, so everyone was probably pretty pumped up to try and go and win the game.”I think Angie brought us together just before we walked off the field and said, ‘You know, it’s do or die. Someone step up or everyone step up and try and win the game.’ Whether through luck or ability, whatever, we managed to get through.”If Sri Lanka win their final group match against Australia on Monday, they will progress to the semi-final regardless of outcome of the other game. Sri Lanka have built a win out of belief at the Oval, and an embattled Australia have some way to go if they are to deny them another one.

The Bangladesh selectors have not named a replacement for Yasir, which has depleted their batting line-up even further.Only Nurul Hasan, who returned to the Test side on the back of heavy scoring in the domestic competition, looks like a viable option at No 5. BCCI bans journalist Boria Majumdar for two years for 'intimidation' of Wriddhiman Saha

No press accreditation, interviews with registered players or access to cricket facilities owned by BCCI or its member associations

ESPNcricinfo staff04-May-2022The BCCI has banned Boria Majumdar, the Kolkata-based journalist Wriddhiman Saha had pointed at for “threat and intimidation”, for two years. Majumdar will not get press accreditation for domestic or international matches in India, interviews with any “registered players”, and access to cricket facilities owned by the BCCI or the state/member associations. In a missive sent to its members, the BCCI said that a three-member committee comprising vice-president Rajeev Shukla, treasurer Arun Dhumal and councillor Prabhtej Singh Bhatia had spoken to both Saha and Majumdar and concluded that Majumdar’s actions “were indeed in the nature of threat and intimidation”. They recommended the sanctions to the BCCI’s Apex Council, which agreed and imposed the ban.In February, Saha, who had been dropped from India’s Test team for the home series against Sri Lanka, had taken to Twitter to publish a screenshot of messages that a journalist had sent him on WhatsApp. The screenshot showed the sender requesting Saha “to do an interview with me”, to which Saha did not respond. The messages eventually took a more aggressive tone: “You did not call. Never again will I interview you. I don’t take insults kindly. And I will remember this. This wasn’t something ypu [sic] should have done.”Though Saha hadn’t named the journalist in question, Majumdar responded on March 5, saying he would serve a legal notice to Saha for defamation. Majumdar, in a video he put out on social media, said the screenshot Saha had put out was a doctored version of an exchange between the two.The BCCI, as it says in the message to the member associations, “had taken congnizance of this incident and deemed it necessary to investigate and probe the matter to avoid the recurrence of such instances with other players”, and formed the three-member committee. The committee subsequently “considered the submissions” of Saha and Majumdar before arriving at their decision.

Rodrigues, spinners script comfortable win to put India 1-0 up

India maintained their unbeaten T20I record in Sri Lanka, comfortably defending a first innings total of 138

S Sudarshanan23-Jun-2022Sri Lanka have never beaten India in a T20I at home. They last won a T20I against them in 2014, which was just one of their three wins in 19 encounters against India in the format. India ensured this record stayed intact by beating the hosts by 34 runs in the first of the three-match series in Dambulla.Jemimah Rodrigues at No. 5 made a crucial 36* first to help India get to 138 for 6, before the spinners applied the brakes on the Sri Lankan batters.Ranasinghe sends early jitters
India didn’t get the desired start after opting to bat. On a slowish surface, Sri Lanka pressed their slow bowlers into action early on, stifling Smriti Mandhana. The left-hander then tried to break the shackles against offspinner Oshadi Ranasinghe, only to miscue one straight to mid-on. On the next ball, Ranasinghe dismissed Sabbhineni Meghana for a first-ball duck to jolt the tourists early. But Shafali Vermaand captain Harmanpreet Kaurmotored along and prevented the hosts from making inroads. Harmanpreet put the sweep to good effect to transfer the pressure back to Sri Lanka while Shafali was happy to use her feet to milk singles as well as score boundaries.Rodrigues’ flourish after Ranaweera’s stifle
Shafali was dismissed by Chamari Athapaththu on her second ball, holing out to long-on for a run-a-ball 31. Soon left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera got into the act to stifle the middle order. She first trapped Harmanpreet in front for 22 before dismissing Richa Ghosh and the dangerous Pooja Vastrakar in successive overs.India were 106 for 6 after 17 overs with Deepti Sharma joining Rodrigues, who had managed to get a good measure of the surface. Along with Deepti, who played an impressive eight-ball cameo of 17 after walking in at No. 8, Rodrigues helped India add 32 off the last three overs, including taking 20 off the final over delivered by offspinner Kavisha Dilhari.Familiar storyThe 139-run chase from Sri Lanka had a familiar look to it with Athapaththu scoring 15 of the 25 they scored in the powerplay. But Radha Yadav, playing her first T20I since the tour to England last year, dismissed Athapaththu and Harshitha Madavi in the same over to kill off the chase.Dilhari finished unbeaten on 46 after walking in at No. 4 but couldn’t receive enough support from the other end. India used 12 overs of spin, including that of Shafali’s offspin – where she had Ama Kanchana stumped for her maiden international wicket – to keep the home side in check and start off their tour with a win.
