Vincent Kompany showed 'courage' by dropping Harry Kane for 'top speed and high intensity' as record-breaking Bayern Munich earn praise from Lothar Matthaus

Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has praised Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany for showing the courage to bench stars Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz in Bayern Munich’s 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen. The World Cup winner believes Kompany’s rotation policy has not only helped manage the players’ workload but also shown his trust in the entire squad, keeping morale high.

Bayern stroll to victory without Kane or Olise

Kompany made seven changes to his starting lineup from the win against Koln as Bayern cruised to a 3-0 Bundesliga victory over Leverkusen on Saturday. The Bayern manager opted to rest key players such as Kane, Diaz and Olise, giving several squad members the opportunity to impress. Nicolas Jackson, Serge Gnabry and Tom Bischoff were among those who came into the starting XI, and all three played crucial roles in Bayern’s dominant performance.

The changes paid off handsomely as Bayern maintained their perfect start to the season. Gnabry opened the scoring with a composed finish following a swift counter-attack, before Jackson doubled the lead with a well-timed header between two defenders. The victory was sealed when Raphael Guerreiro’s dangerous cross was deflected into his own net by Leverkusen defender Loic Bade.

At his post-match press conference, Kompany said he felt the game against Leverkusen was the ideal moment to rotate the squad, given that Bayern face Paris Saint-Germain in a crucial Champions League fixture on Tuesday. “Of course we’re always better when Harry plays and is in top form," he said. "But today it felt like the other guys were also ready – and now we have a rested Harry. Everyone always asks me: When does Harry get a break? When does Lucho [Diaz] get a break? Today just felt like the ideal moment.

“Many thought something could go wrong today. The opponent probably thought that too. But for me, the important thing was to attack it with fire. It’s sometimes dangerous, but at some point, you have to do it, otherwise you don’t need to build a squad.”

The courage to make these changes was lauded by former Germany midfielder Matthaus, who applauded Kompany for the bravery he showed.

In his column for , Matthaus praised the courage shown by Kompany to rest his star players and show faith in the rest of the squad to get the job done. He wrote: "Kompany showed courage. Kane, Diaz and Olise might have liked to play from the start, but it's also about the atmosphere in the team and the trust that the manager shows in the other players."

He added that rotating the squad not only helps with workload management but also boosts team morale, as Kompany chose to play the reserve players against a strong Leverkusen side. "After the exhausting cup match in Koln, the changes to the starting line-up were important, and not just for managing fatigue.

"He showed his trust in them by playing them against a Leverkusen side that had recently been in good form, rather than against a relegation candidate."

Recipe for Bayern's success

Bayern have made a perfect start to the season, winning all 15 matches across the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, DFL-Supercup, and Champions League. Their flawless form has led Koln coach Lukas Kwasniok to label them strong contenders for the treble. Their success can be attributed to manager Kompany, who has introduced a tactical system built on perseverance and sacrifice. The approach has brought the best out of his squad, particularly Kane and Konrad Laimer, who was recently labelled "world-class" by Austria teammate David Alaba.

Matthaus believes that continuing the winning streak is entirely up to the players themselves, noting that their recipe for success has been hard work, speed, and intensity.

"It is entirely up to Bayern themselves to extend their winning streak. They are not arrogant, but remain humble. Their work rate is outstanding," he added.

“Everything is executed by every player in every position at top speed and with maximum intensity.“

So near yet so far as LSG falter in Eliminator once again

The overseas contingent led the way, and Krunal showed his captaincy wares in Rahul’s absence, but Hooda’s poor form didn’t help

Ekanth25-May-20235:02

Moody: LSG did well but need Indian batting depth

Where they finished

Position on table: Third after the league stage, with 17 points
Wins: Eight
Losses: Five
No result: One
Lucknow Super Giants made it to the playoffs for the second time in two years but were knocked out in the Eliminator once again, this time losing to Mumbai Indians in Chennai. Despite KL Rahul’s campaign ending early with a thigh injury, Krunal Pandya led them to three wins in their four league games. But Rahul’s absence, and the underwhelming returns from their other Indian batters, hurt them in the Eliminator.

The good: The overseas contingent

With Quinton de Kock away on national duty, Kyle Mayers started the tournament for LSG. His rollicking knocks – three half-centuries in his first three outings – meant de Kock had to warm the bench for a fair few games even when he was available. De Kock finally got his chance when Rahul was ruled out. He scored 143 runs in four innings at a strike rate of 140.19 but was left out for the Eliminator, a move that sparked a debate. If Mayers gave LSG flying starts, Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran took care of the middle order, turning games around with their audacious hitting.Stoinis had his most productive season with the bat, topping the run charts for LSG with a tally of 408. He scored those runs at a strike rate of 150 and notched up three fifties. His all-round skills came to the fore against Rajasthan Royals, where he dismissed Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal to help his side defend 154.Pooran was fearless with the bat. His 15-ball half-century against Royal Challengers Bangalore helped LSG chase down 213. Against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he combined with Stoinis to smash Abhishek Sharma for 31 runs in a game-changing over.LSG’s musclemen: Nicholas Pooran and Marcus Stoinis•BCCINaveen-ul-Haq came good in his debut IPL season, making full use of the opportunity he got due to Mark Wood’s illness. Wood had picked up 11 wickets in just four games, but the slow tracks at the Ekana Cricket Stadium meant LSG persisted with Naveen even after Wood had recovered. Naveen ended the season with 11 wickets from eight games, his four-for in the Eliminator going a long way in restricting Mumbai to 182.Among Indian players, Ravi Bishnoi continued his growth by taking 16 wickets at an economy rate of 7.74, while Yash Thakur impressed with 13 wickets from nine games at 9.07.

Poll

The bad: Hooda’s horrid season

Deepak Hooda was one of the key Indian players for LSG, more so after Rahul’s injury. But he could muster only 84 runs in 12 innings with a best of 17. Ayush Badoni and Krunal played a couple of handy knocks but in the games where Stoinis and Pooran failed, the middle order looked brittle. With Mohsin Khan not available for the first nine games, Avesh Khan was expected to shoulder extra responsibility. But he had a forgettable season. In nine games, he picked up just eight wickets at an economy of 9.75. With Naveen getting the nod over Wood, LSG missed a strike bowler in the powerplay.

Top performer: Nicholas Pooran

Once he get going, which he did more often than not, Pooran was unstoppable. His ability to attack from ball one is what allowed him to rack up two 40-plus scores at a strike rate of 300-plus: a 19-ball 62 against RCB and a 13-ball 44 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Both innings illustrate his intelligent selection of boundary options. He finished the season with 26 fours and as many sixes. He was severe against pace bowlers, scoring at a strike rate of 198.14. Against spin, it was slightly lower – 145.45 – but only by Pooran’s standards.

The highlights

  • LSG racked up 257 for 5 – the second-highest in the history of IPL – in a record-tumbling innings against Punjab Kings in Mohali. Only two of the 20 overs did not feature a boundary.
  • The 31 runs ransacked by Pooran and Stoinis off Abhishek in the 16th over against Sunrisers were the joint-most in an over in IPL 2023.
  • Pooran’s 15-ball fifty against RCB is the joint-third-fastest in the IPL.

Morris, Lamb lead Lancashire to another win

In-form opener Lamb scores 84 before Morris claims maiden List A five-for in 35-run victory over Durham

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay19-May-2025Lancashire Women continued their excellent form in the Metrobank One Day Cup with a 35-run victory over Durham Women at Blackpool.Opener Emma Lamb scored 84, while five wickets for 33 runs from left-arm spinner Sophie Morris were the highlights for a jubilant Red Rose who have now won six of their eight games in the competition so far and sit second in the table. Defeat for Durham leaves them fifth.Lamb has been in fine form so far this season and she continued her hot streak as she cruised to a half-century from 62 balls. With 20-year-old debutant Tilly Kesteven for company, the opening pair had built a first wicket partnership of 72 when Kesteven holed out to Suzie Bates at mid-on off Mady Villiers for 17. Villers struck again when she enticed Katie Mack down the pitch with the Australian stumped for 5.Any chance of a Lancashire wobble was quickly settled by Seren Smale who joined Lamb in taking the score serenely to 142 before the third wicket fell when the Lamb was bowled by Katy Levick.Skipper Ellie Threlkeld edged Grace Thompson for 12 with Sophie Ecclestone doing the same soon after for 2 but when Smale was brilliantly caught on the boundary by Thompson for 37 off Villiers, the hosts had the platform at 192 for 6 with ten overs remaining.Cameos from Kate Cross (24) and Tara Norris (15) gave the innings impetus with Phoebe Turner able to pick up some cheap wickets to finish with 3 for 41 as Lancashire were bowled out for 239 with two balls of the last over remaining.Durham had been wasteful with their extras, conceding 30 wides, and they were immediately shown the advantages of bowling straight by Mahika Gaur whose excellent first over accounted for Emma Marlow without scoring. But with Bates and skipper Hollie Armitage at the crease, Durham could still look at the target without trepidation and the second-wicket pair cruised their way to a 50 partnership. An excellent steepling catch from Cross off Grace Potts eventually accounted for Armitage for 47 and when Villiers departed for 4, caught by Ecclestone off Morris, quickly followed by Mia Rogers, caught by Lamb to give Morris another wicket, the game was back in the balance at 90 for 4.Ecclestone against Bates looked like the key contest and the England slow left armer looked to have the ball on a string as the Australian and fellow batter, Heath, survived numerous leg-before appeals to take the score to 155 when Heath mistimed a drive off Gaur to Cross for 45.Morris struck again to bowl Bates for 63 with one which kept low and suddenly Lancashire were favourites again with Durham on 170 for 6 and still requiring 71 runs for victory. While most were looking to Ecclestone to make the inroads, it was Morris who stole the spotlight, and she claimed her fourth victim with a caught-and-bowled to dismiss Katherine Fraser for one before snaring her first five-wicket haul in List A cricket when she bowled Phoebe Turner for 13.Cross returned to take the last wicket as Mack juggled a catch on the boundary to leave Durham all out for 204.

Liverpool take decisive action against ticket touting as Premier League champions shut down colossal number of accounts in major crackdown

Liverpool have shut down around 145,000 ticket accounts in the past two years as part of a huge crackdown operation. The club say they took 'decisive action' to put an end to 45,000 fake ticketing accounts and they are currently investigating a further 10,000. The Reds added that this is a 'positive' drop in the almost 100,000 fake accounts that were created and closed in the 2023-24 season.

  • Ticket touting has been a rising problem

Back in 2023, BBC Sport reported that Premier League ticket touting was worth more than £50 million ($66.7m) per year.

In January of that year, Brighton blocked approximately 150 Liverpool fans from gaining entry to the home section of the Amex for their FA Cup clash, with the Sussex side discovering that touts had set up multiple fake accounts to buy tickets from the club and then resell them for up to £250.

Arsenal also said they had blocked "100,000 suspected bots" from their ticketing sites. Fast forward to the present, and this is still a raging battle, but one that Liverpool are seemingly determined to win.

    Liverpool take decisive action

In addition to shutting down 145,000 ticket accounts, Liverpool also revealed that they issued a record 1,114 lifetime bans last season after discovering the mass manipulation of software used to buy tickets. This is in stark contrast to the 75 lifetime bans handed out across the 2023-24 season.

Almost 500 people were denied entry to Anfield for trying to enter the ground with a 'burner phone', and just under 400 targeted stops were carried out on matchdays. Investigators for the Reds also shut down 162 social media groups – with a combined membership of more than 'one million users' – involved in selling fake tickets that came to nothing or at 'extortionate rates'.

A statement on Liverpool's official website reads: "Liverpool FC continues to crack down on all forms of ticketing touting, both online and on the ground, to protect genuine fans from being ripped off or scammed.

"Liverpool FC will continue to take robust action across this season, with increased resource targeting those involved in the proliferation of touting activity. Supporters should be aware that if they are in possession of a ticket that has not been forwarded in line with the club's terms and conditions, or are present inside Anfield without a valid ticket, they will be ejected by stewards or the police."

The club added that fans can report unofficial ticket sales or fraudulent tickets to them here.

  • Ticket touting 'endemic' in football

Tom Greatrex, the head of the Football Supporters Association, told that he had doubts over the Premier League's commitment to tackling this issue.

"Long-term supporters are finding it impossible to get tickets because of the way they are made available through secondary agencies," he said. "This is becoming endemic across the game."

BBC's report adds that just 12 arrests were recorded by the Home Office last season for ticket touting across English football's top six tiers.

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport said in a statement: "The unauthorised resale of football match tickets in England and Wales is illegal. Legislation is in place to minimise the risk of disorder, with football clubs responsible for implementing their own strategies to prevent ticket sales to unauthorised resellers. While the law applies only to domestic resales, it covers any element of an unauthorised sales chain that takes place within England and Wales."

  • Liverpool prepare for busy period

Aside from ticket touting crackdowns, the reigning Premier League champions and early pacesetters are gearing up for a busy period over the next week or so as the second international break of the season nears.

Arne Slot's team travel to unbeaten Crystal Palace on Saturday, before heading off to Turkey to face Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday. They then kick-off October with a trip to London to play Chelsea four days later. If they can win both of those league games, the Merseyside outfit may extend their lead at the top beyond the current gap of five points.

'Machine' Cristiano Ronaldo backed to be 'vital' player for Portugal at 2026 World Cup 'regardless of how long he stays on the field'

Cristiano Ronaldo has been backed to be a "vital" player for Portugal at the 2026 World Cup "regardless of how long he stays on the field". The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, now armed with a record-shattering new two-year contract at Saudi giants Al-Nassr, shows no signs of slowing down. His relentless pursuit of football immortality, including the dream of smashing through the 1,000 career goal barrier, has football fans wondering: just how long can this "machine" keep going?

2026 World Cup: The final frontier

Despite his glittering haul of honours, including a European Championship and two UEFA Nations League trophies at international level, the World Cup remains the one gaping hole in Ronaldo’s incredible career. And the Portugal captain is more determined than ever to fill it. With the next edition of the tournament being staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico, there is growing belief that this golden generation, led by their immortal No.7, could deliver the biggest prize of all.

AdvertisementGettyGilberto Silva gives his verdict

Former Arsenal and Brazil star Gilberto Silva, who helped his country win the 2002 World Cup, has thrown his weight firmly behind Ronaldo, hailing his mental toughness and unique leadership qualities.

"He's a machine. Cristiano has a mentality like no other player," he said in an interview with "He can turn things around and find a solution on the pitch. In recent years, he's not as fast as he used to be, but he's found a role playing as a number nine and continues to score goals like mad. I think his leadership is so important and vital for Portugal, regardless of how long he stays on the field. I'm sure having him in the squad would be great for every player because he can inspire them, push them to their limits, and make them believe they are capable of achieving things."

Changing the game, to keep the edge

Gone are the days when Ronaldo terrorised defenders with blistering speed down the wing. But what he’s lost in raw pace, he’s more than made up for with ruthless finishing and clever positioning. At Al-Nassr, he has slotted seamlessly into the role of a penalty-box predator, his movement and anticipation proving just as deadly as his thunderous right foot.

Portugal are stacked with talented players, including Bruno Fernandes, Rafael Leao, Joao Felix, Bernardo Silva and Diogo Costa. Add Ronaldo’s leadership and drive, and suddenly the dream of lifting the World Cup doesn’t look so far-fetched. If the rest of the team clicks, Ronaldo could well be the difference between another near miss and football’s ultimate triumph.

Alas, poor Rohit

No hundred for the hard work, and no win for India either, but a good time was had by all

Saurav Dey06-Dec-2011Choice of game
I had watched the second and third Tests of the series at the grounds, and had no plans to watch any of the ODIs, but a couple of scheduled meetings were cancelled, and I thought I could make good use of the time. So I came down to Ahmedabad from Mumbai to catch the game I expected would clinch the series for India.Key performer
Though Ravi Rampaul bowled a superb spell and Rohit Sharma showed glimpses of the greatness many expect him to achieve, Darren Sammy was my Man of the Match. Not easy to be in his shoes, since he carries the burden of possibly being the most criticised international cricketer around. When West Indies were batting, he took Abhimanyu Mithun to the cleaners in the 49th over, changing the complexion of the game completely. During the Indian chase, he ran Rohit out superbly to make up for a couple of dropped catches. The man never stops trying. Also, he kept his cool till the end and managed to get India all out, and did not panic when Rohit and Ashwin came close to the target. Good to see Sammy smiling for the right reasons at least once in the series. One thing I’d have changed

I’d have liked Rohit to get his century and take India home as he promised in an interview a few days back.Face-off I relished
Rohit v the West Indies. Sammy was sporting enough to congratulate him after his dismissal.Wow moment
When Kieron Pollard hit a Vinay Kumar delivery high, we all looked to see whether the ball would go over the rope. Then, suddenly, from nowhere came Ravindra Jadeja, hot on its trail, before lunging at the ball and taking a ripper, stunning the whole crowd into disbelief. This was followed by loud celebrations from the crowd, and all his team-mates ran towards Jadeja to congratulate him. The next moment, everyone turned towards the giant screen to see the replay, after which the crowd stood up in unison to applaud.Close encounter
Virat Kohli gets cheered everywhere he goes, and often looks a little hassled by it, but this time he waved graciously at the spectators when they chanted his name. But the one who pleased the crowd the most was Kieron Pollard – whenever the crowd cheered for him, he turned back and did a , sending the crowd into a frenzy.Shot of the day
Before the last ball of the 43rd over, it seemed like Rohit was asking Mithun to judiciously block the delivery. Mithun had other ideas, and hit it for a huge six. The crowd, who had been happy to watch him block the ball till then, went delirious and produced another standing ovation, with people calling him the “Mithun Chakraborty of cricket”.Crowd meter
The stadium was almost jam-packed. There was a constant buzz all the time, though it dimmed considerably after Jadeja’s dismissal, with India at 105 for 6. There were brisk sales of Indian flags outside, and I haven’t so many flags at a stadium, even at Eden or Wankhede. In this Indian team, it is usually Virat Kohli who gets the most cheers, but local boy Parthiv Patel was the apple of everyone’s eye today. An elderly gentleman walked in a little late, sat in my row and asked the people around: “Sachin ? Parthiv “? (Is Sachin here? Parthiv?) He asked later if Aaron and Yadav were the same or two different players. An elderly man and his grandson sitting in front of me watched the game with whole-hearted enthusiasm. Towards the end of the West Indies innings, the grandpa tried to explain to the boy that they should support Windies now so that they would score some runs and the game would become interesting. So when Andre Russell and Sammy hit boundaries, the grandpa beamed, while the grandson ( keen on the plan) sulked.Entertainment
A lady with a singsong voice announced at the beginning that India had won the toss and decided to field. During the break she announced with great seriousness that no one should make racist comments that can hurt other people’s feelings.During the break, all what we saw was one of the Indians (seemed to be Rahane) get some fielding practice. The spectators watched with great interest and applauded every time he took a good catch.Accessories
Nothing absolutely. I have enough stadium experience to know that the more things you take to a stadium in India, the more trouble you will have. As usual, the food was very badly managed, with the one stall for four gates overcrowded all the time; after an hour all it was selling was popcorn, which means most people spent much of their time without any decent food.Marks out of 10
An 8, easily. Would have been a 9, had the match gone to the last over, and maybe a 9.5 had India won with a Rohit century. It was a cracker of a match, with the Indian chase keeping our hopes alive. The last-wicket partnership between Umesh Yadav and Mithun kept us hanging on, and every run scored was celebrated with festival-like fervour.

KKR bring in Johnson for Moeen, ask unchanged LSG to bat first

The match was originally scheduled for April 6, but had to be rescheduled because of security issues

What has worked for Mitchell Marsh this season?

Toss Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and chose to bowl in Tuesday’s afternoon game at Eden Gardens against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). KKR made one change for the home game, replacing allrounder Moeen Ali with left-arm seamer Spencer Johnson. LSG named an unchanged team.”The wicket looks really good,” Rahane said at the toss to Danny Morrison. “It hasn’t been hot in Kolkata, wickets will not change [in the second half]. Everybody is looking forward to this game after all our units did well in the last game [against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)].”Rahane said KKR were not worried about their opening partnerships not clicking, backing Quinton de Kock and Sunil Narine at the top. “People are going to talk about it,” he said. “Sunil and Quinny are match-winners, so we are not worried.”2:15

Bangar: Varun and Narine will be key to counter LSG’s big-hitters

LSG captain Rishabh Pant said he wasn’t very happy with the team’s start to IPL 2025 – they have won two and lost two so far – but hoped for an upward trend in this critical period of the season. They fielded the same team that defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) on Friday.KKR’s decision to field first was an interesting one because captains in day games have preferred to bat so far this season. The team batting first has also won eight of the last 17 games at this venue. This fixture is a rescheduled one. It was originally meant to be held on Sunday, April 6. Dyche could send Coleman packing by unleashing Everton’s teen sensation

Over the years, Everton have done an excellent job of developing youngsters who have gone on to feature in first-team or even make a name for themselves elsewhere.

Unsurprisingly, Wayne Rooney is the name that springs to mind, after he burst onto the scene back in 2002/03, scoring his first senior goal in superb fashion, with his long-range effort against Arsenal at Goodison Park.

Wayne Rooney

Anthony Gordon is the latest big name to come out of Finch Farm, featuring 78 times for the Toffees’ first team, before departing for £45m to join Newcastle in 2023 – thriving this season scoring 11 times in the league.

However, the club currently have an ageing squad, with the average age of Sean Dyche’s first team standing at 26.7, the fifth oldest in the division this season.

The club need to inject some more youth into the side, with Jarrad Branthwaite thriving with regular game time – subsequently being subject to £70m interest from top-flight rivals Manchester United this summer.

With the transfer window rapidly approaching, Dyche will want to add to his squad. But, he can save himself and the club a lot of money, by unleashing one youngster who has excelled within the club’s academy.

Roman Dixon’s record with Everton’s U21s

An England youth international, right-back Roman Dixon has impressed for the club in the Premier League 2 this season, featuring 17 times and starting 80% of those matches.

He’s previously excelled within the academy, including a speedy and direct solo run against Manchester City, topped off with an excellent finish – an example of the quality he possesses.

Dixon also featured three times in the Bristol Street Motors trophy this season, gaining valuable experience facing off against League One and League Two opposition in his first taste of senior football.

The youngster is yet to feature in any capacity under Dyche, but with his excellent form and the need for a right-back at Goodison, next season could be a perfect time for the talent to break into the first team.

Seamus Coleman has featured at full-back for well over a decade, but with the Irishman coming towards the end of his career, it’s time Dyche banished the hero from the starting lineup and injected some needed youth into the side.

Why Dyche must replace Coleman next season

The 35-year-old defender has featured 421 times for the Toffees since his debut way back in 2009, with Coleman becoming a staple under numerous different managers on Merseyside.

However, his age has caught up to him, with the defender starting to struggle with his injuries in recent seasons.

The club can easily dip into the transfer market to replace the experienced full-back, but given the club’s troubles surrounding PSR in the last 12 months, they can save themselves a fortune by utilising Dixon, who’s already on their books.

The “outstanding” teen, as dubbed by The Athletic’s Everton correspondent Patrick Boyland, has all the qualities to thrive in the Premier League as a modern-day full-back.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

His pace and tenacity would easily fit into Dyche’s system – having been hailed as 'a speedy and powerful right-back' by the club's official website – with the youngster needing a chance to prove himself up to the demands of England’s top flight.

He’s certainly still a raw talent, but given his success within the club’s academy setup, he could well be ready for the jump into senior football – Coleman's expiring contract offering the perfect opportunity for a changing of the guard.

Considering the club's financial situation, they may not have the funds to find a suitable replacement for Coleman, thus allowing them to devote more first-team minutes to Dixon and ensuring the club reap the rewards in the long term.

That comes in the form of Bruno Fernandes, who is wanted by Al-Nassr in a bid to reunite him with ex-teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. The midfielder has been one of Manchester United's stalwarts in recent season, and missed his first club game through injury ever last week.

After returning to help his side to a 3-2 win over Newcastle United to boost their hopes of European football next season, Fernandes admitted that he wants to stay but only if he feels wanted.

"I feel that the club wants me to be a part of the future, so, as I said always, I don't want to be a player that the club doesn't want to have", he explained. "If for some reason they don't want to have me, I will go, but if they want me I will stay."

Ten Hag largely said the same when quizzed, also heaping praise on Bruno's "brilliant" form this term: "No, absolutely, the club wants to keep Bruno. There is no question. He loves Manchester United, he loves the fans from Manchester United, and he loves to play for Manchester United."

But, taking home £240,000 a week at Old Trafford and keen not to be part of a project in the prime years of his career, the midfielder falls into the high earners category and ESPN report that at Al Nassr "there is a belief that a large enough offer could tempt the club to cash in" on their star, who is down to the final two years of his contract.

Money shouldn't be a problem for the Saudi side, who are owned by Prince Faisal bin Turki, who has a net worth of $22.6 billion.

Whether Fernandes will want to leave Europe or Manchester United is another matter, but there may come a point where the Red Devils decide the offer is too good to turn down.
