Imagine him & Merino: Arsenal targeting incredible late £48m signing

We have finally made it to the final week of the transfer window, and while some clubs can sit back safe in the knowledge that they've completed their summer business, Arsenal cannot.

At this point in time, the only new addition to the first team has been Riccardo Calafiori, although based on reports, the signing of Mikel Merino is all but sewn up, with his medical already out of the way.

However, while both internationals will undoubtedly improve Mikel Arteta's squad, there is still a belief among fans and many in the media that the North Londoners need to strengthen their frontline, especially off the back of Gabriel Jesus' most recent injury.

Fortunately, recent reports have once again linked a world-class attacker to last season's Premier League runners-up, and he'd be incredible alongside Merino.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from Spain, Arsenal are still interested in signing Athletic Bilbao superstar Nico Williams.

The European champion was heavily touted for a move to the Emirates earlier this summer, only for the links to cool off the back of stories claiming he wanted to move to Barcelona before it then looked like he'd stay with the Basque outfit for another campaign.

However, this recent report claims that while there are still some complications around the winger's wage and desire to remain in Spain, the Catalans' inability to secure his services this summer has given the Gunners another opportunity to get this deal done, which would require an offer of around £48m due to his release clause.

It would be a costly and complicated transfer to get over the line, but based on Williams' form last season, one well worth pursuing, especially as he could be great with Merino.

Why Williams' would be great with Merino

So, with Merino's move all but complete at this point, it seems almost certain that his primary role in the team will be to play as the out-and-out left eight, in turn allowing Declan Rice to move back into the six, which he described as his "best position" and seeing Martin Odegaard continue his work in the ten role.

However, while the Spaniard's likely to have the most impact on his fellow midfielders in North London, he's also undoubtedly going to form a fantastic partnership with whoever is playing at left-wing – ideally Williams – akin to how the Norwegian genius plays so well with Bukayo Saka on the right.

The soon-to-be former Real Sociedad star would naturally form a relationship with whoever's on the left due to his position on the pitch, but the nature of his game will only see that partnership improve.

For example, in 45 appearances last season, the 28-year-old racked up eight goals and five assists, suggesting that he'll be able to either provide an excellent ball for the Bilbao star to latch onto and finish, or he'll be occupying defenders himself due to his goal threat, in turn freeing up space for the 22-year-old "level raiser", as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, to exploit himself.

Moreover, the former Newcastle United ace is a serial duel winner, being the only player in Europe's top seven leagues last season to win over 300, meaning he could win an aerial duel from a goal kick for the Pamplona-born dynamo to then get onto and launch a rapid attack down the wings.

Ultimately, the midfield veteran looks ideally suited to form a brilliant partnership with whoever plays left-wing for the Gunners.

Still, considering Williams racked up a frankly absurd haul of eight goals and 19 assists in 37 games last season, he would be the dream option.

Therefore, Edu Gaspar and Co must do what they can to get this transfer over the line, as a partnership between the Spanish internationals on the left to complement the one between Odegaard and Saka on the right could lead them to Premier League glory this season.

Ajaz Patel: 'This is what dreams are made of'

Vettori: Ajaz built pressure with his accuracy, consistency and fields

Left-arm spinners of Indian origin playing against India at the Wankhede Stadium has tended not to end well for the hosts. Monty Panesar has been part of two Test wins with England, in 2005-06 and 2012-13. And through the first session, New Zealand’s Ajaz Patel, bowing in Mumbai, might just have given them a flashback of bad memories. At one point his figures read 12-7-14-3, which included the wickets of Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara for ducks.”Pretty cool,” Ajaz said of his day’s work. “This is what dreams are made of. To be out here and pick up four wickets on the first day is pretty special. At the same time the job is only half done. So we have got to make sure we turn up tomorrow and really work hard for the last six wickets.”Related

However, Ajaz enjoyed little support from the other end, with the other two spinners going for 66 runs in their 12 overs on a surface that the ball turned from the middle of the pitch on day one. One of them, Rachin Ravindra, was unwell while Ajaz had words of support for others too.”Everyone was out there working hard and poor old Rachin came down with a bug this morning,” Ajaz said. “He fought his way out there throughout the day. It is pretty impressive form the young man to be able to stick it out. It really shows his character. Tomorrow is a new day. We start fresh, and we go again. It is just about bowling in partnerships. I am sure we will turn up tomorrow.”Watch live cricket on ESPN+ in the US

India ended the day 221 for 4 having been 80 for 3 at one point, which has already given India a handy advantage in this Test. Ajaz said New Zealand will need long periods of good bowling to claw their way back into the Test.”Test cricket is really about keeping it simple and consistently hitting good areas over a long period of time and challenging the batsmen over a long period,” Ajaz said. “Tomorrow’s game plan is very simple. Try and restrict them as much as possible. Bowl a lot of good balls. Force them to hit good balls as opposed to allowing them to hurt us with the bad ones. We just need to make sure we are consistent and in good areas for long periods of time.”There is definitely assistance out there for spin bowling. And we have got more bounce than we had in Kanpur. So as a spinner you still want to bowl and work hard and put it in the good area for a long time. It is really about keeping the game plan really simple and using the wicket as much as possible.”

Paul Walter puts Essex on front foot after Gloucestershire skittled for 76

Paul Walter hit his fourth LV= Insurance Championship half-century of the season as Essex eked out a painstaking 74-run lead on a sun-baked Chelmsford day when 15 wickets fell. The tall left-hander was the only batsmen to get to grips with a worn pitch on which Gloucestershire were bowled out for a paltry 76 in 28 overs before lunch. Gloucestershire were undone in double-quick time as seamer Jamie Porter marked his 100th first-class appearance with 4 for 32, supported in a blistering opening spell by Sam Cook, who claimed 3 for 27.Division Two leaders Essex started in similar downbeat mode until Walter stepped in. By the close of the first day he had reached 71 not out from 189 balls.Gloucestershire, put in, were soon in trouble. Porter had Miles Hammond and Ben Charlesworth pinned lbw in successive overs. Cook then removed James Beacey and Tom Lace with consecutive balls, Bracey edging an outswinger and Lace misjudging one and losing his off stump.A third wicket in nine balls fell without addition when Chris Dent edged to second slip. He was soon followed by Graeme van Buuren, who left one from Cook that jagged back and removed his off stump.Ryan Higgins adopted an aggressive approach, but lost seventh-wicket partner Ollie Price, who slashed wildly to fourth slip for Porter’s fourth scalp. Simon Harmer took just three overs to wrap up the Gloucestershire innings taking the final three wickets for just two runs. Zafar Khan swept to square leg, Higgins was snaffled at short leg to end a 60-ball 25, and David Payne was bowled pushing forward. The procession of wickets continued at the start of Essex’s reply: it took 30 overs to post their first 50, by which time they were four wickets down.Nick Browne wafted at Payne in the third over while Alastair Cook went seven overs later when trapped in front by Higgins for 15. Tom Westley departed lbw for a 38-ball 2 and Michael Pepper tickled a lifter from Payne.Walter and Josh Rymell steadied the ship for 16 overs before tea, but four balls after the break Zafar turned one sharply and found the edge of Rymell’s bat.Walter had taken 20 balls to get off the mark, but quietly eased Essex into the lead He was joined by Adam Wheater (30 not out) in an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 75 that threatened to take the game away from the visitors.

In the hours leading up to the ceremony, the atmosphere turned sour for Real Madrid's delegation after learning of Vinicius' defeat. In a show of discontent, the team chose not to attend the event in Paris. Several Los Blancos players, including Vinicius, took to social media to express their outrage and Eduardo Camavinga even claimed that the result was down to "football politics" rather than sporting merit.

Ribery did not hold back in his critique of the Ballon d'Or results. The former Bayern Munich star, who has long held a grudge over his own Ballon d'Or snub in 2013, took to social media to express his amusement, as he mocked the award with three laughing emojis.

Despite being favoured by bookmakers, he finished third, behind both Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

"It was unfair," Ribery previously stated in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport. "It was an incredible season for me, and I should have won it. They extended the time for votes, and something strange happened. I felt that it was a political choice."

Spurs battling to sign £45m star who’s the perfect Gallagher alternative

da bet7: After a campaign full of promise and disappointment, it's set to be an incredibly important summer for Tottenham Hotspur as they look to bring in the right players to support Ange Postecoglou's plan to lead the club to the top of the Premier League.

da blaze casino: Following an impressive start to the 2023/24 campaign, Spurs sat top of the league at one stage, but ended up finishing the season in fifth position, 25 points off eventual champions, Manchester City.

More additions need to be made to close the gap to Pep Guardiola’s side, especially if the club are to have any chance of fulfilling Postecoglou’s dream of winning the title with the north London outfit.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou

Archie Gray has already arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a deal worth up to £40m, but it appears Daniel Levy and Co aren't stopping there, with more names being touted for a move to the Lilywhites.

One player in particular has been strongly linked in recent days, potentially becoming a key player in Spurs’ midfield transformation.

Tottenham’s transfer news

Pretty much since the conclusion of the previous Premier League campaign, Tottenham have been linked with a move to sign Chelsea central midfielder Conor Gallagher.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher

The 24-year-old enjoyed a successful campaign under Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge last season, catching the eye of Postecoglou with his tenacious and relentless nature.

Unsurprisingly, with Gallagher being an English talent featuring in the Premier League, he would cost a pretty penny, with Chelsea holding out for £50m to part ways with their academy star.

However, in recent days, the club have been linked with another midfielder to try and complete the club’s midfield overhaul.

According to GIVEMESPORT, Spurs are interested in a move for 24-year-old Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Serie A outfit Atalanta.

The in-demand talent has made 36 appearances in the league this season, scoring on six occasions, helping the club finish fourth and securing a Champions League spot ahead of next campaign.

Atalanta midfielder Ederson

His excellent campaign in Italy hasn’t gone unnoticed, with fellow Premier League side Liverpool recently submitting a €45m (£38m) bid for his services whilst also still retaining an interest in bringing him to Anfield.

Why Ederson would be the perfect Gallagher alternative for Spurs

Whilst both stars are undoubtedly very talented and possess numerous talents that would improve Spurs’ midfield, when comparing the two there’s evidence that the Brazilian is a more complete player despite scoring fewer goals in all competitions than the current England international.

When analysing the duo’s stats on FBref, Ederson has showcased his excellent abilities on the ball, completing over six times more progressive passes – a figure that could allow the attacking players at Spurs to thrive further should the Atalanta star join the club.

The midfield “machine” as dubbed by writer Carlo Garganese, has also achieved a 27% higher tackle success rate and won 11% more aerial battles than the Chelsea star, fitting into Postecoglou’s relentless system perfectly.

Whilst they’re set to face huge competition from Liverpool for his signature, Spurs must work tirelessly to pursue a move for Ederson, with the Brazilian having all the quality to thrive in north London.

With Atalanta wanting £45m to part ways with their midfield dynamo, he provides a cheaper alternative to Gallagher, whilst also allowing the Lilywhites to sign a higher quality talent who’s ready-made for England’s top flight.

It may be a hefty sum, but it would allow Postecoglou to finally complete his midfield overhaul at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

Could be Edouard 2.0: Celtic confident of signing "incredible" ace

The new season kicks off in less than a month for Celtic and they are yet to dip into the market to make their first signing of the summer transfer window.

Kilmarnock await the Bhoys at Paradise in the opening match of the 2024/25 Scottish Premiership campaign and it remains to be seen whether or not there will be any new faces for the supporters to look forward to seeing in action.

A new number one is on the agenda for the Hoops after Joe Hart officially retired from professional football at the end of May, following three seasons in Glasgow.

Newcastle United's Martin Dubravka and Croatia star Dominik Livakovic have both been linked with transfers to Parkhead to fill the vacant position.

Along with a new first-choice shot-stopper for Brendan Rodgers, the Premiership champions could also look to bolster their attacking options ahead of next season.

Celtic were held to a 1-1 draw by lower league side Ayr in their first pre-season friendly, with their only goal coming via Kyogo Furuhashi's penalty, and they may want to improve their firepower before the window slams shut.

Celtic pursuing deal for Irish striker

According to the Daily Record, the Hoops are 'confident' of securing a deal to sign centre-forward Adam Idah on a permanent basis from Norwich City.

The report does not, however, reveal what their next step is with the Canaries or how much they are prepared to pay to land the Ireland international.

BBC Sport reported last week that the English Championship side officially rejected an offer of between £4m and £5m from the Hoops for the 6 foot 3 attacker.

The outlet added that the Yellows are not actively looking to cash in on their talented academy graduate, as Johannes Hoff Thorup – who replaced David Wagner this summer – is keen to take a look at him in pre-season.

HITC then published a claim that it could take a fee of up to £8m to sign the 23-year-old marksman from Norwich, who are said to be open to selling the attacker for the right price.

This latest report from the Daily Record states that the club are confident, though, and this suggests that they feel they can reach an agreement with the Canaries.

They may either be ready to splash out £8m to make it happen or they could reach a compromise and pay a fee between £5m and £8m to secure his services.

If the Bhoys can eventually get a deal over the line for the Irish sensation then they could repeat the masterclass they played with the signing Odsonne Edouard from Paris Saint-Germain.

Celtic's Odsonne Edouard masterclass

The Hoops initially signed the French centre-forward on loan from the Ligue 1 giants for the 2017/18 campaign and he enjoyed a solid debut season at Parkhead.

Former Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard.

Edouard ended the term with a return of nine goals and three assists in 22 Premiership appearances for the Scottish giants, with three goals and one assist in three top-six split matches.

His form during that loan spell convinced the Bhoys to splash out a club-record transfer fee of £9m to sign him from PSG on a permanent deal in the summer of 2018.

As you can see in the table above, Edouard then went on to prove himself to be a prolific scorer for the Premiership side over the next three-and-a-bit years.

He averaged more than one goal every other game in the league for Celtic over just over three seasons as a permanent player, following his loan, and that attracted interest from elsewhere.

In the summer of 2021, Premier League outfit Crystal Palace swooped in to sign the French marksman in a £14m deal that could rise to a whopping £18.5m.

This shows that they pulled off a masterclass with the signing of Edouard as they made a significant profit on the £9m they spent to snap him up after his initial loan stint.

Therefore, their bold decision to smash their club-record transfer fee to ensure that they landed him on a permanent deal turned out to be a blinder.

Why Adam Idah could be Odsonne Edouard 2.0

Whilst the £8m figure touted for Idah would not break the club's transfer record, signing the Norwich ace looks set to take a huge amount of money for Celtic and they should now press ahead to sign him as the Irishman could turn out to be Edouard 2.0.

At the age of 23, they would be signing a centre-forward who has plenty of time left on his hands to develop and improve over the years to come.

This means that the £23k-per-week attacker could grow whilst working with Rodgers on the training pitch and increase his value by performing well on the pitch for Celtic.

That could then attract interest from elsewhere and land him a big-money move back down south to net the Hoops another huge payday, which was also the case with Edouard.

Idah's form for the club during his loan spell at Parkhead in the second half of the 2023/24 campaign suggests that the potential is there for him to follow in the Frenchman's footsteps to become a consistent and lethal scorer in the Premiership.

As you can see in the table above, the Ireland international racked up a staggering eight goals in just five league starts for the Scottish giants.

Imagine him & Idah: Celtic in talks to sign £4m star

The Hoops are reportedly pursuing a deal to snap up the talented midfielder.

Therefore, Celtic must now sign the Norwich gem on a permanent deal this summer in the hope that he can carry that form over to a full season in Scotland and push on to become Edouard 2.0 at Parkhead.

Celtic could forget Idah in swoop for SPFL star who’s "unplayable at times"

Celtic have just over two months left to complete the business they want to do in the summer transfer window, which opened just over a week ago.

The Hoops are coming off the back of a domestic double in the 2023/24 campaign under Brendan Rodgers, who returned for a second spell at Parkhead last summer.

A Scottish Premiership title and the SFA Cup last month ensured that the Bhoys collected some silverware, after they had been knocked out of the League Cup and the Champions League during the first half of the season.

The Northern Irish head coach could be forced to make changes to his forward department in the summer window, with players moving away and possibly coming in.

Belgian giants Genk have been linked with a swoop for South Korea international Hyeon-gyu Oh and are said to have tabled a bid of around £4m for his services.

Celtic striker Hyeon-gyu Oh.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether or not Adam Idah will join on a permanent basis from Norwich City after his initial loan, with new Canaries boss Johannes Hoff Thorup wanting to look at him in pre-season before making a decision.

Celtic's interest in SPFL centre-forward

The Athletic recently reported that the Hoops are one of a number of clubs interested in a possible deal to sign centre-forward Theo Bair from Motherwell this summer.

It was stated that both Old Firm teams – Celtic and Rangers – are eyeing up the Canada international after his exploits in the Premiership last season.

The outlet added that a host of German sides are also keen on the SPFL marksman, which shows that there will be plenty of competition to land his signature over the coming weeks.

Theo Bair in action for Canada.

It remains to be seen whether or not Motherwell are prepared to cash in on their star striker, or how much they would be willing to sell him for if they were.

Meanwhile, Norwich are said to be looking for a fee of at least £6m for Idah amid Celtic's interest in bringing him back to Parkhead on a permanent basis.

However, as aforementioned, the English Championship side are set to take a look at him in pre-season so that their new manager can judge whether or not the Ireland international will be a part of his plans moving forward at Carrow Road.

Rodgers could now forget all about a swoop for the 6 foot 3 dynamo by winning the race to sign Bair from Motherwell ahead of Rangers and the German teams keen on him.

Adam Idah's loan spell with Celtic

The Irish attacker arrived at Paradise on loan from Norwich in the winter window earlier this year and hit the ground running as an impressive goalscorer.

Kyogo Furuhashi endured a difficult season in front of goal as the Japan international spurned a staggering 24 'big chances' and only scored 14 times in 38 league appearances.

That meant that the Hoops needed another player to step up and provide the firepower needed to get them over the line in the Premiership and that is what Idah did during the second half of the campaign with eight goals in 15 outings.

As you can see in the table above, the Canaries academy graduate stepped up with a much-needed goalscoring burst without even starting games on a regular basis.

However, Rodgers and his staff need to judge whether it was a flash in the pan or a sign of things to come from the 23-year-old attacker, who had previously struggled to score goals on a consistent basis.

Idah only scored 17 goals in 115 appearances in all competitions for Norwich after breaking through from the academy, and never managed more than six goals in a single league campaign for them.

The risk for Celtic is that they pay £6m, or more, to acquire his services and his form reverts back to what it was in Norfolk instead of carrying on from where he left off at Parkhead.

A similar issue is also there with Bair, who is coming off the back of the best season in his career to date, but the Motherwell man has proven his quality over the course of a full season as a starter, whereas Idah was predominantly on the bench for Celtic.

Why Celtic should sign Theo Bair

The Canada international, who is currently competing at the Copa America with his country, was named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year for the 2023/24 campaign, thanks to his fantastic performances on the pitch.

Fascinatingly, the 24-year-old ace joined Motherwell from Premiership rivals St. Johnstone last summer after a dismal return of one goal in 27 league games.

Perhaps he needed that first year of Scottish football to adapt to the league as his form in his second term proved to be the polar opposite of his initial struggles, which could also be put down to a change in environment.

Bair started 31 of his team's 38 Premiership matches last season and caught the eye with 15 strikes, which earned him a place in the Team of the Year, and this shows that he can provide a consistent goal threat whilst starting week-in-week-out.

As you can see in the table above, the Canadian dynamo also significantly outperformed Kyogo in terms of his quality as a goalscorer in the division.

Bair, who also recorded six assists for his teammates to go along with his goal threat, missed 13 fewer 'big chances' whilst scoring one more goal than the Celtic forward.

Now, imagine how many goals the young marksman, who manager Stewart Kettlewell described as "unplayable at times", could score if he had the high-quality chances that Kyogo had created for him in a Hoops shirt.
