How Liverpool and supporters paid tribute to Diogo Jota in their first match since his passing in pre-season friendly with Preston

Liverpool returned to action for the first time since Diogo Jota's tragic death, marking the occasion with a series of powerful tributes during their pre-season clash with Preston North End. Supporters, players and staff came together at Deepdale to honour the late Portugal international and his brother Andre Silva in an emotional evening of remembrance.

Liverpool fans filled the away end with chants of Jota’s name and waved flags that read 'forever our number 20,' while songs referencing Jota’s standing above Portugal legend Luis Figo rang out even before the first whistle. During the second half of the clash, Darwin Nunez scored the Reds' second goal and paid his own tribute by performing Jota's 'gaming' celebration.

Chris Woakes: 'I hope I've done enough to be in that starting XI, but competition is high'

The ideal Test-bowling wingman, Woakes has built up an enviable record at home

Alan Gardner03-Aug-2020In many ways, it was the archetypal Chris Woakes performance. Left out for the first Test against West Indies, he didn’t voice his frustrations in the manner of Stuart Broad (if anyone had thought to ask, he would have doubtless said the team comes first); recalled for the second, he quietly pocketed his 100th Test wicket as part of five in the match (Broad took six); and in the third, Woakes claimed a fourth Test five-for… only marginally overshadowed by Broad’s six-for, ten in the match and 500th overall.Perhaps the only surprise is that he hasn’t found himself behind Broad James Anderson in the line for plaudits (for the record, Woakes has 11 wickets at 16.63 this summer, Anderson five at 30.00). Amid the talk about England’s two fast-bowling greats, and the depth of seam-bowling strength available to Joe Root and Chris Silverwood – particularly in home conditions – it might be overlooked that in Woakes they have one of Test cricket’s outstanding wingmen. It is a role Woakes seems happy to fulfil. Even though only two bowlers – Anderson and Australia’s Pat Cummins – have lower Test bowling averages in England since Woakes made his debut in 2013, he concedes he doesn’t know if he will be picked for this week’s opener against Pakistan. “If I’m selected then great, but if not I’ll get myself ready for whenever the next game is,” he said on Monday, after rejoining the team’s bio-secure bubble at Emirates Old Trafford.

“I hope I’ve done enough to be in that starting XI, but competition is high at the minute,” he said. “We’ve got still two of England’s greats charging in and taking wickets every time they play and we’ve got exciting fast bowlers as well. It’s not an easy team to be cemented in. My record in England is brilliant. I’m obviously pleased with that. I want to keep getting better, improving myself. Every time I get the opportunity to play for England, home or away, I give 110% and try to do my best for the team.”Unsurprisingly, sporting a post-lockdown Alice band did not lead to David Beckham-levels of scrutiny for Woakes (though only one of them has a World Cup winner’s medal). A dedicated Aston Villa fan, Woakes’ quick trim between Test series might mean his haircut is now edging towards Jack Grealish territory – “not quite,” he protests, “not as much product as Jack has in his” – but in footballing parlance, Woakes will continue to do the unglamorous job of box-to-box workhorse rather than midfield showman.”I honestly really don’t mind – I’m not one for being the centre of attention,” Woakes said of his status. “Don’t get me wrong, I want to go on the field and perform, I want to make match-winning performances for England, but it really doesn’t bother me if I’m first choice to write about or not, to be brutally honest. My stats have been mentioned: they’re very good in England and I want to keep working on those, keep improving them, make them as good as they can be. At my age, where I’m now 31, it’s probably unlikely I’m going to go on and get 500 Test wickets like Jimmy and Broady, but I still want to go on and get as many as I can.”Chris Woakes busts a gut in training•Gareth Copley/Getty ImagesEngland’s record-breaking new-ball pair will undoubtedly be a hard act to follow. Anderson had just turned 31 when Woakes debuted, but he already had more than 300 Test wickets to his name. That said, he has added another 265 since then, which ought to encourage Woakes that there is plenty more to come. One factor in whether he retains his place against Pakistan is likely to be the fitness of Ben Stokes. England played a four-man pace attack in the West Indies decider, as well as the spinner Dom Bess, with Woakes and Jofra Archer providing support to Broad and Anderson. But if Stokes’ sore quad has settled enough to allow him to play a full part with the ball – and he was able to have a gentle bowl in training on Monday – there may be a temptation to bring back Zak Crawley at No. 3.That would likely see one of the seamers returned to drinks duty – perhaps more than one, if Mark Wood or Sam Curran impresses in the nets. Good problems for Root and Silverwood to have, no doubt, as they seek to hit the ground running against a team they haven’t beaten in four Test series, going back to 2010.ALSO READ: Broad reveals he considered retiring after WI omissionBut perhaps the identity of the opposition should also mean England think long and hard about whether to leave out Woakes again. It was Pakistan’s arrival four years ago that coincided with his emergence as a Test bowler of distinction, with 26 wickets in the drawn series; overall, he averages 16.93 against them, from five Tests.”That was a real big turning point for me, 2016. I found a bit of rhythm, got the ball moving in the air and bowled at decent pace that summer,” he said. “Thankfully that went really well. So hopefully I can draw on those memories for this series coming up. I feel like I’ve changed as a cricketer since then: with experience and time you develop new skills. But also I feel like I’ve become a lot more consistent, both as a cricketer and as a person as well. It’s the complete package: the older you get and you learn your game a little bit more.”In time, we might come to see “the complete package” as an apt description for Woakes. Not that he’ll be fussed either way.

Balbirnie's 77 leads the way as Ireland beat Pakistan for the first time in T20Is

Babar’s fifty and Iftikhar’s 38* off 15 balls took Pakistan to 182, but Ireland chased it down with a ball to spare

ESPNcricinfo staff10-May-2024Ireland and Pakistan were playing each other in a T20I for the first time in 15 years, and Andy Balbirnie’s 77 helped the hosts beat the visitors. It was Ireland’s first win over Pakistan in the format, with the only time the teams having met earlier coming at the World T20 in 2009.Harry Tector, who added 77 with Balbirnie for the third wicket, set the platform in the 183-run chase, before cameos from George Dockrell and Curtis Campher took Ireland over the line. The chase came down to a tense finish, with Ireland needing 40 in the last four overs even as Pakistan had an over each from Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi, along with two from Abbas Afridi, in the bank. Abbas started the 17th over with the wicket of Dockrell and conceded just three off the first four balls. But then began the recurring theme of a bowler starting the over well before conceding a late boundary and bringing down the asking rate.Next over, with Ireland requiring another 28 from 17 balls, Shadab Khan couldn’t hold on to a tough chance, and handed Balbirnie a life. Naseem nailed a couple of yorkers to bring the game back in the balance. But Delany made room and crunched a low full toss through cover to make it 11 off the over.Shaheen was closer to his best in the penultimate over, which started with Ireland requiring another 19. He delivered around-the-wicket yorkers, and knocked over Balbirnie with a swerving, low full toss. But an audacious reverse ramp first ball from Campher over the keeper left Abbas with 11 to defend off the final over.Campher was taken aback by the first ball by Abbas rising off a shortish length, but managed to guide it off the under-edge between the wicketkeeper and short third for four. He capitalised on a missed yorker to level the scores before sneaking a leg bye to seal victory.Babar Azam scored 57•Sportsfile/Getty ImagesBalbirnie, Tector set up the chaseIreland’s aggressive start to the chase saw Naseem dismiss Paul Stirling cheaply. Shaheen was off boil in his two opening overs but Abbas, his replacement, struck first ball after being given to bowl in the powerplay. But coming in at 27 for 2 did not stop Tector from looking for early boundaries. It allowed Balbirnie to consolidate at the other end, as the pair lifted Ireland from 43 for 2 in the powerplay to 84 for 2 after ten overs. They targeted Shadab Khan after Imad Wasim tightened his length to stay afloat.Tector fell to Imad but Dockrell joined Balbirnie to take Shadab down for 23 in the match-turning 14th over. The last ball was skied towards Iftikhar Ahmed at long-on, but he stepped on the boundary cushion to give Dockrell a life, along with six runs. Balbirnie and Dockrell kept the run rate around nine an over to set up the successful finish.Babar fifty, Iftikhar cameo lift PakistanEarlier in the day, Ireland had put Pakistan in to bat. Babar Azam joined Saim Ayub in the second over after Tector, placed at mid-off, ran Mohammed Rizwan out, as the latter was called for a single by Ayub, before being sent back.Babar and Ayub found mixed success while trying to muscle the ball in the powerplay, as they hit six fours and a six, but were also often beaten by Mark Adair and Barry McCarthy’s tight lengths. After the powerplay, the two batters took on Ben White and Curtis Campher, as they accelerated and added 53 off the next five overs. They punished at anything too full or too short, but Ayub holed out to a wide drag down from Delany, who ended the 85-run stand off 57 balls.Babar brought up a 39-ball fifty in the 13th over, but the scoring kept fluctuating as he continued to hit and miss, even as Fakhar Zaman was unable to get off the blocks.Young’s return in the 13th over pegged Pakistan back as Babar miscued a shortish ball to long-on to finish with a 43-ball 57, while Azam Khan, trying to go over deep square leg, fell for a two-ball duck.Pakistan went on to lose 3 for 7 in six legal balls midway from the 15th over onwards. Fakhar then fell in the 18th over for 20 off 18 balls, but Iftikhar was unfazed. He took a liking to Adair, smacking him for three sixes and two fours across eight legal balls.Iftikhar, who finished on 38* from 15 balls, was aided by Shaheen’s two sixes off McCarthy in the 19th over, as Pakistan smashed 44 off the last three to reach 182, which Ireland chased down with a ball to spare.

Smooth-sailing Australia look to cement Super Eight berth

A dominate display against England has left Mitchell Marsh’s team sitting comfortably

Rapid Fire Review – Is Australia’s 201 a real statement for other teams?

Match detailsAustralia vs Namibia
Antigua, 8.30pm local timeBig Picture – Australia pose tough challenge for NamibiaA number of the so-called ‘big’ teams have found this tournament a struggle so far – the hopes of England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka hang by flimsy threads while New Zealand started poorly. But myAustralia, barring their small stumble early on against Oman, are tracking nicely after their resounding performance against England in Barbados.A win against Namibia will confirm their progression to the Super Eight ahead of their final group fixture with Scotland – a game that could yet be dripping with narrative – although they won’t want to leave anything to chance. A change of venue from Bridgetown to the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua will bring with it the need to recalibrate to the conditions, but there appear very few holes in Mitchell Marsh’s team, with depth on the bench as well.Related

Australia punch and counterpunch to blow England away

Australia could rest players vs Scotland in potential Group B decider

The batting performance against England was a perfect team effort with a top score of 39 in a total of 201 with Glenn Maxwell’s strike-rate of 112 the lowest. Perhaps, if nitpicking, one of those scores being converted would have capped things off, but it also showed how a deep batting order can just keep on going once the platform has been laid as it was by David Warner and Travis Head. The only previous occasion these two teams have met in a full international (they played a warm-up game a couple of weeks ago) was at the 2003 ODI World Cup in South Africa. On that day, Glenn McGrath helped himself to figures of 7 for 15 which remain the best figures in that tournament.Namibia’s group stage is backended by the clashes against Australia and the under-pressure England. Their captain Gerhard Erasmus was left frustrated by the performance against Scotland where he thought his team had enough runs but were below their best in the field.Form guide(last five matches, most recent first)

In the spotlight: Adam Zampa and Bernard ScholtzAdam Zampa is settling into the tournament very nicely after coming off a lengthy break following the Australian season. He has a brace of wickets from both outings and was one of the key differences against England when he claimed the dangerous Phil Salt with his first ball. He has developed into a white-ball great for Australia and is now just four wickets away from being their first men’s player to reach 100 T20I wickets.Left-arm spinner Bernard Scholtz has been incredibly tidy in Namibia’s first two outings and, along with the captain, was key to piling on the pressure against Scotland. He has 1 for 20 from both the matches, showing skilful variation of flight and pace, conceding just one four and one six across his eight overs. The prospect of taking on Australia’s heavy hitters will be a daunting one but they would be wise not to take him lightly.Team news: Australia have an eye on their quicksHead coach Andrew McDonald said Australia would not be looking too far ahead and would pick their best XI rather than rotate players for this game, although that could come against Scotland should qualification be assured. However, he did leave the door ajar for some management of the quicks given the tight schedule ahead.Australia (possible) 1 David Warner, 2 Travis Head, 3 Mitchell Marsh (capt), 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 Marcus Stoinis, 6 Tim David, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh HazlewoodThe one change Namibia have made so far is JP Kotze for Michael van Lingen – both have made first-over ducks. The balance of their side has been knocked out of kilter somewhat by Jan Frylinck and JJ Smit being unable to bowl.Namibia (possible) 1 JP Kotze, 2 Nikolaas Davin, 3 Jan Frylinck, 4 Gerhard Erasmus (capt), 5 Malan Kruger, 6 Zane Green (wk), 7 David Wiese, 8 Ruben Trumpelmann, 9 JJ Smit, 10 Bernard Scholtz, 11 Tangeni LungameniPitch and conditionsThe early signs from Antigua’s first match was that it could be a quick-scoring venue as Scotland raced to their target against Oman. The breeze can play a significant factor at this ground. The forecast is for cloudy conditions but no major threat of rain.Stats that matter Although Australia have not played a full international against Namibia since 2003, Tim David faced them once during his Singapore days. David Wiese faced Australia four times in T20Is during his South Africa career The Scotland-Oman game was the first T20I at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium since 2021 – overall it has the second-lowest T20I batting strike-rate of all grounds in the CaribbeanQuotes”Some time in the middle, it was a difficult surface outside the power play, [and a] challenge with spin. I think it ended up being 28 off 25 balls. But it was a significant innings in allowing the rest of the batting line-up to get where we wanted them to get to. So, albeit it wasn’t the dynamic innings that we’re used to with Glenn Maxwell, it was a different type of innings.””I think everyone’s been waiting a long time for these last two games against Australia and England. Two previous winners and that’s definitely the two teams you want to play and you want to sort of make a mark for yourself in those games.”

The Blues are willing to work out a way with Dortmund, but have made it clear it would involve payment. However, the Bundesliga big hitters don't want to spend money on the 21-year-old and argue that should Chukwuemeka perform well, he will attract more interest at the tournament and it will be easier for Chelsea to offload him, while also providing game time to the midfielder, who was completely overlooked by Enzo Maresca before heading on loan in January.

Chukwuemeka arrived at Signal Iduna Park in the winter transfer window. The 21-year-old English midfielder ticked all the boxes for Dortmund, who wanted a player who can control the game in the middle and has an eye for exceptional passes. However, the youngster failed to make much of an impact and as such Dortmund are unwilling to bring him back to Germany permanently, having already found his replacement in Jobe Bellingham.

Jamie Gittens' transfer to Chelsea has again reignited, with the London club willing to spend more and fill the €5-10m gap in the player's valuation that hindered the transfer earlier. Nuno loves him: Nottingham Forest working on deal for "fantastic" £20m star

Nottingham Forest are now “working” on a summer deal for a “fantastic” forward, who would be a “brilliant signing”, according to former scout Mick Brown.

Forest pursuing a Champions League level striker

Forest have surpassed all expectations to push for Champions League qualification this season, and they owe a lot of their success to striker Chris Wood, who has been prolific in front of goal, netting 18 times in the Premier League.

However, it is clear Nuno is now pursuing another top striker, and there are some extremely exciting targets in mind, not least Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, with owner Evangelos Marinakis reportedly willing to break the bank for the Nigerian.

Another option is Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, having made contact with the representatives of the Swedish striker, who has been extremely impressive this season, most notably netting a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League.

Nottingham Forest want to sign "super" ace who could cost Marinakis £50m

Nottingham Forest have identified a new transfer target ahead of the summer.

ByBrett Worthington Mar 25, 2025

The Tricky Trees have also identified targets from within the Premier League, with talks over a deal for Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matheus Cunha currently ongoing, while they may be able to sign Brentford’s Yoane Wissa for just £15m – £20m.

Football Insider have now dropped a new update on Nottingham Forest’s pursuit of Wissa, claiming the forward is their top priority for the summer transfer window, before relaying quotes from Brown, who believes he would be a fantastic addition to the squad.

“What sort of player is it Forest look for to improve their team? They’re based on the two widemen and their pace, getting in behind players on the break and getting crosses in for the big centre-forward.

Brentford's YoaneWissacelebrates scoring their first goal

“Wissa, to me, is a box player – and I don’t mean to be disrespectful when I say that – he’s not somebody who comes linking the play up and combining with people and that type of thing. Forest are working here on a brilliant signing.”

"Fantastic" Wissa impressing Nuno

Nuno is believed to be a big fan of the forward, given his ability to play across the front three, and he has proven himself as a reliable goal threat for Brentford this season, having scored 14 goals in 26 Premier League games.

The 28-year-old also scored a remarkable goal against Chelsea last season, having consistently found the back of the net for the Bees since arriving from FC Lorient in 2021, with this campaign proving to be his most prolific to date.

The DR Congo international, who has been lauded as “fantastic” by Thomas Frank, has proven he could be ready to make the step-up to a club in the Champions League, and his potential availability for just £15m – £20m is an added bonus.

The only minor concern will be the fact Wissa will turn 29 in September, with all of Forest’s other striker targets younger, although Osimhen and Gyokeres are yet to prove themselves in the Premier League.

He earns way more than Isak: Berta must axe "frustrating" Arsenal star ASAP

Earlier this month, it was announced that Andrea Berta had agreed to become Arsenal’s new Sporting Director, and while he’ll be joining a team who have fought for the Premier League title three seasons on the bounce now, he’ll have a lot of work to do.

Mikel Arteta’s side are undoubtedly one of the very best in the country, but this season has proven that attacking reinforcements are desperately needed.

One of the stars most heavily linked with the club in recent months has been Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, although, with reports claiming he could cost up to £150m, it’d be a Herculean deal to get over the line.

That said, with several players set to leave this summer, a significant amount of the wage bill should be freed up, which could help the ownership secure the Swede’s services.

However, there is another star player who almost certainly won’t be leaving this year but should be one of the players Berta looks to move on as soon as possible, as they make more than twice as much as Isak.

Arsenal's decreasing wage bill

So, before getting to the player in question, it’s worth looking at how much Arsenal’s wage bill could decrease by this summer, with certain players’ contracts expiring and others potentially being sold.

Starting with those who are in the former group, it seems almost guaranteed now that Thomas Partey, who makes £200k-per-week, and Jorginho, on £110k-per-week, will be leaving the club at the end of June alongside Celtic-bound Kieran Tierney, who also makes £110k-per-week.

Raheem Sterling, who has been earning around £110k-per-week and Neto, who makes £50k-per-week, will also come off the wage bill when their loan spells end in the summer.

Finally, while there is a chance the club will fail to sell any of their fringe players in the transfer window, it feels increasingly likely that Oleksandr Zinchenko, who earns £150k-per-week, will finally be moved on, as he’ll have just a year left on his contract if not.

So, when you add together the wages of those who are out of contract, those on loan and Zinchenko, it doesn’t seem too far-fetched that Arsenal could reduce their wage bill by an astounding £730k-per-week before making any signings in the summer, which comes out to a massive figure of £37.96m per year.

Such an incredible sum of money being saved could help Berta and Co raise the finances needed to complete their summer transfer plans, although there is still another big earner in the club who needs to be moved on as soon as possible.

The Arsenal star Berta needs to sell

With a lot of Arsenal’s big earners either making good on their wage packets or mentioned above, it will likely come as no surprise that the player we are talking about is Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian forward joined the Gunners for around £45m in the summer of 2022, and while he was truly sensational for the first half of that season, he has not been the same player since suffering a serious knee injury at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Since then, it would be hard to argue that the former Manchester City star has been deserving of his enormous £265k-per-week wage when potentially world-class strikers like Isak are earning less than half of that, coming in at around £120k-per-week.

For example, while the Sao Paulo-born nine wasn’t bad last season, he was, as pundit Micah Richards put it, “frustrating,” as for all the silky footwork and innate skill he has, he was only able to muster up a tally of eight goals and eight assists in 36 appearances, which wasn’t enough to stop Kai Havertz eventually replacing him as Arteta’s go-to striker.

In contrast, the Toon star, who has endured his own injury problems, was able to amass a haul of 25 goals and two assists in 40 appearances and looks set to do even better this year, already hitting 23 goals and five assists in just 33 games.

For his efforts, the Gunners’ forward was only able to score seven goals and provide two assists in his 27 appearances before his ACL injury this season, which is what will keep him at the Emirates this summer.

However, once he is back to full fitness at some point in 2026, Berta and Co need to move him on as soon as they can, as not only is he no longer at the level required to push the team forward, but his bumper contract expires in June 2027, meaning the window to get a decent fee for him will be slight.

Ultimately, Jesus is an undeniably talented footballer, but his inefficiency in front of goal, poor injury record and monster wages mean that he has to be sold by Arsenal as soon as they get the chance.

Arsenal have a future England superstar & it's not Nwaneri or Lewis-Skelly

The incredible prospect could be a game-changer for Arsenal and England.
