Man Utd Boss Ten Hag Pulling Out All Stops To Land £40m Ace

Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag is keen on signing Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund this summer and has video called the youngster to detail his plans for his prospective arrival, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest transfer news involving Rasmus Hojlund?

As per GOAL, Manchester United have been linked with a move for Hojlund this summer and it is believed that Atalanta are seeking to recoup £40 million for the teenage sensation.

Speaking to Tipsbladet with quotes transcribed via the outlet, Hojlund commented on recent developments, including his choice to sign up to a new agency and he also addressed rumours surrounding his future, stating: “It’s a trial period and that’s all I can say [agency]." He then added: “It is a huge club, so I must have done something right if it’s rumoured they want me. We have to see what happens. As you see and hear, I imagine a lot could happen to quite a few strikers this summer, as many clubs are looking for a No.9. Something will definitely happen there, and then we’ll have to wait and see if I am included in it. I am very happy to be with Atalanta and we have qualified for Europe. I have found myself in a really good place here, so now we have to wait and see.”

talkSPORT understand that Hojlund is subject to serious interest from the Red Devils, which is set to be taken up a notch in the off-season, with boss Ten Hag targeting two forwards to strengthen his forward line.

Sky Sports report that Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane is also a target for Manchester United; however, it is said that the England international may be unattainable, making Hojlund a more likely target at Old Trafford.

Interestingly, it has been reported that Ten Hag has already had a video call with the striker.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jones has shared his thoughts on the rumours that Ten Hag has made contact via a video call to try and sell Hojlund a vision of what life could be like at Manchester United.

Jones told FFC: "That personal touch can be so key in landing targets, we've seen Arteta use it to his benefit at Arsenal and I think it's a road that Ten Hag should be going down too. Making video calls is probably a good way of being able to get an early message across to a player, to show them your passion and show them the sincerity to which there is a pursuit of a player."

Does Rasmus Hojlund have the potential to succeed at Manchester United?

Hojlund absolutely has the potential to succeed at Manchester United and it is no surprise that the Premier League giants are trying to land the 20-year-old in an early stage of his career development.

In 2022/23, combined between his stint at Sturm Graz and factoring in his exploits at Atalanta, the Denmark international was in fine form, registering 16 goals and seven assists in 42 appearances, as per Transfermarkt.

Rasmus Hojlund of Atalanta

WhoScored also note that Hojlund has a keen eye for goal and took on an average of 1.7 shots per match in Serie A during the campaign.

As per FBRef, Hojlund has also demonstrated excellent positional awareness and has soared in comparison to his positional peers in Europe's top five divisions concerning progressive passes received, taking in around 11 per match across the last 365 days, putting him in the first percentile for this metric.

Moving forward, Hojlund may well be a long-term solution in the final third for Manchester United that could grow into an elite striker with the correct man management.

Bangar wants Rahul to put price on wicket

The India batting coach said that the Bengaluru Test was very much in the balance and if they played the first two sessions on the fourth day well, they would have their noses ahead of the visitors

Karthik Krishnaswamy in Bengaluru06-Mar-20171:15

We had a chat about how to negotiate spin – Bangar

Having made his second half-century of the match, KL Rahul was dismissed trying to drive Steve O’Keefe away from his body. It wasn’t the first time he had been out playing an aggressive shot in recent months. He drove away from his body and dragged the ball onto his stumps in the first innings of the Hyderabad Test against Bangladesh, and was caught at long-off after scoring a half-century in the first Test against Australia in Pune. He was out looking to hit over the top in the first innings at the Chinnaswamy Stadium as well, though on that occasion he was running out of partners and looking for quick runs.Sanjay Bangar, India’s batting coach, has said he has had a “chat” with Rahul over the nature of his dismissals.”Generally within the batting group, over the last 18 to 20 months we have been so used to batting with five batsmen wherein all the batsmen have made that conscious effort to look beyond their personal landmarks. It’s not being happy with a 50 or 100 but batsmen who are wanting to go that extra mile, put in the hard work and play a big innings, which will have an eventual impact on the state of the match,” Bangar said at the end of day three.”That is something all the boys have been doing. Rahul was very disappointed and we definitely had a chat. It’s something that we want him to improve in the games to come because he is a quality player. The way he was stroking the ball, really looked comfortable, was smothering the spin really well and I think he understands that probably in the series and matches to come, he will definitely put a price on his wicket and see less of those unforced errors.”Rahul was one of two half-centurions in India’s second innings, the other being Cheteshwar Pujara, and a third batsman, Ajinkya Rahane, was batting on 40 at stumps. It was a crucial innings in the context of the match, but also personally for Rahane, who had passed 50 only once in his ten previous Test innings. Bangar, though, said Rahane’s form had not been a concern to the team management.”Rahul was very disappointed and we definitely had a chat”•Associated Press”I am surprised we talk about him [Rahane] being under pressure,” Bangar said. “He has been the most impressive and utility player overseas, the kind of performances he has given in the last two to three years are worthy of applause. Outside India he averages more than 50 and here, when one says that he is not able to play that well, when we see the stats on the TV, his average in India is above 40 too.”For a middle-order batsman it’s good. Whenever he has gotten an opportunity [he has done well]. He was injured in the middle too. Before that he had scored 188 against New Zealand. On a difficult wicket against New Zealand in Kolkata he scored 77. Against Bangladesh he scored 82. He is a quality player. Today he applied himself well. [He] was part of a very crucial partnership today. We are just hoping that tomorrow he continues the same way.”When asked about Ravindra Jadeja’s promotion to No. 5, Bangar said the move had been made with his left-handedness in mind.”We wanted to have the right-left combination going. Jadeja has ability with the bat. We wanted to make sure that we get [Nathan] Lyon slightly away from his line of attack. Because whenever a left-hander comes, Lyon generally comes around the wicket and he favours more to bowl outside the rough to the right-hander. So just to upset his rhythm. If an opportunity arises he could have gone after the left-arm spinner [O’Keefe]. That was the plan, a well thought-out plan. It didn’t work that way.”Bangar felt the Test match, with India ending day three with six wickets in hand and a lead of 126, was in the balance, and that they needed two more good sessions to get themselves in front.”I think it will be a tough surface for both the teams and the cracks are going to get wider,” he said. “How they adapt to the surface and conditions is important. At the moment, the match is very much in the balance. I think if we put up a good show in the next two sessions then we will slightly have our nose ahead.”

Law sets sights on West Indies' World Cup qualification

With the deadline for direct qualification for the 2019 World Cup on September 30, and with that luxury given only to the top eight teams including hosts England, West Indies who are at No. 9, are in a precarious position

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Mar-2017The new West Indies coach Stuart Law has said his main aim is to make sure the team qualifies directly for the 2019 World Cup.Currently ranked No. 9 by the ICC, West Indies have to improve their position by at least one spot before the September 30 deadline. The top eight ODI sides, including hosts England, on the cut-off date gain automatic entry into the showpiece event while the bottom four will have to go through the rigours of a qualifying competition, where ten contenders fight for only two spots.West Indies’ quest begins with the first of three ODIs at home against England on March 3. Then they take on their nearest competition on the rankings table – Pakistan at No. 8 – in April over three matches, which could prove decisive to which of the two teams end up in the top eight. West Indies also have the cushion of five more 50-over matches against England in the UK before September 30. While winning as much as possible would be the priority of any international cricket team, Law knows it is especially important for his.”The main aim is to qualify for the next World Cup, the 50-over World Cup, so these one-day games are extremely important to us,” he said. “So that’s our main focus really at this stage. I know we have Pakistan coming for T20s, Tests and one-dayers as well but the one-day series probably will take paramount importance.”There is considerable disappointment in West Indies at missing out on the Champions Trophy. They had won the tournament in 2004 but now, for the first time ever, they will not be part of it. Several issues – prominent among them the spat between the WICB and their biggest match-winners – have meant the one-day team, unlike its counterpart in T20s, is rarely at full strength. These concerns, however, are being addressed with the help of Jimmy Adams, the former captain and the new director of cricket in West Indies.”It’s a great little tournament, the Champions Trophy, the mini World Cup and to not be there probably isn’t where you want to be,” Law said. “You want to be in every single one of those tournaments but it is what it is. We’ve just got to make sure we have our heads screwed on for the one-day tournaments we play in upcoming tours and if we can win those, we can get through to qualify for the World Cup. That’s probably the bigger one to worry about.”Law is confident of the men under his charge – “We’ve got power. We’ve got extreme power. Match that with a bit of technique as well, we’re looking pretty good.” – and that helps because he is only into his second month on the job and there are other challenges to navigate as well.”For me, it’s about seeing how it all operates,” Law said “Learning the different cultures from the different islands and how to address people and how to get the best out of the young kids is probably the most important thing for me now. I’m not going to focus on becoming No. 1 in the world at this stage. I’m focusing on building a culture, building a work ethic in the dressing room that will put the little brick in place so that they can become the best they can be.”

Tottenham: Ange Hold Spurs Talks For "Magnificent" Star

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has personally held talks with the representatives of Leicester City star James Maddison, according to reports.

Who will Spurs sign this summer?

Maddison is being pushed as a top target for Spurs by sections of the press with some sources even suggesting that the 26-year-old was at the centre of a double bid last week.

The Lilywhites were said to have lodged an offer for both Maddison and his teammate, Harvey Barnes, worth in excess of £50 million which was swiftly rejected by Leicester.

Sky Sports rebuffed this claim, stating while Spurs had a serious interest in both, no formal proposal of any kind had gone in for the duo.

As well as the Foxes playmaker, it is believed that Tottenham are targeting a new goalkeeper, central defender and possible forward additions.

David Raya of Brentford is wanted to replace Hugo Lloris, meanwhile the likes of Man City defender Aymeric Laporte have been tipped with potential moves to Spurs.

Galasary forward Nicolo Zaniolo has emerged as a target in recent days, too, with Postecoglou seemingly looking to strengthen in various areas of the pitch.

Going back to Maddison, a report by Football Transfers has shared some interesting news on Tottenham's chase for the England international.

Leicester City midfielder James Maddison.

According to their information, Postecoglou has personally held talks with Maddison's agents recently, and he is thought to have made a really good impression on them,

This has apparently helped to sway Maddison more towards Tottenham than Premier League rivals Newcastle, and the former Norwich City star may be tempted to join.

Despite this, Maddison is yet to have any personal contact with Spurs, but Postecoglou coming across well to the player's camp could be crucial.

How many goals did Maddison score last season?

Maddison starred for Leicester over the course of 2022/2023, scoring 10 goals and providing nine assists in the league alone, totalling an impressive 19 attacking contributions (WhoScored).

The Three Lions ace also attempted more shots at goal per 90, completing more key passes and registered their joint-highest rate of successful take-ons in the top flight (WhoScored).

These numbers make one thing crystal clear – he is far too good for the Championship.

Whether it is Newcastle or Spurs, either side may be on to seal a very potent and capable attacking threat in the final third.

Former West Ham and Leicester City star David Connolly has also called Maddison "absolutely magnificent" for his form at the King Power.

Bowlers 'went into defensive mode' – Mashrafe

A failure to take early wickets during the Sri Lanka innings was behind Bangladesh’s defeat, according to captain Mashrafe Mortaza

Mohammad Isam01-Apr-2017

Mehedi Hasan brought up his maiden ODI fifty but Bangladesh had too much left to do•Associated Press

Mashrafe Mortaza suggested the lack of an early breakthrough made his bowling unit impatient and defensive in their 70-run loss to Sri Lanka in Colombo. Bangladesh conceded 76 runs in the first ten overs before Mehedi Hasan broke the opening partnership in the first over of the second Powerplay. There were, however, a few more twists and turns in the third ODI, which Mashrafe later acknowledged as pivotal to his side only drawing the series from a position of being 1-0 ahead.Danushka Gunathilaka and Upul Tharanga gave Sri Lanka their fast start before Kusal Mendis worked hard to keep the run rate above five an over during his 76-ball 54. But when he fell in the 37th over and then Sri Lanka lost Asela Gunaratne and Seekugge Prasanna, their scoring rate slowed down and Bangladesh edged back into the game – only for it to slip out of their hands again in the last six overs, as Thisara Perera and Dilruwan Perera helped add another 59 runs.Selectors stick by XI

Mashrafe Mortaza approved of the consistent selection during the ODI series after the same XI was picked in all three games. This was the first time in Bangladesh’s history that the same XI played in all three games of a three-match series against a higher-ranked side.
“In the New Zealand series we made changes in every game. Confidence of players went down, and [they] started to feel insecure. It is a good thing that we were consistent in Sri Lanka. Everyone understood their role. I hope the team will remain on their toes in Ireland.”

Mashrafe said that early breakthroughs in the first two ODIs meant the Bangladesh attack could bowl according to their plans but as soon as Tharanga and Gunathilaka started charging at the bowlers, the switch from an attacking mindset began and was evident even in those last six overs.”I don’t think it was nervousness [in the first ten overs] but we did use up five bowlers during that period,” Mashrafe said. “We weren’t as disciplined as we were in the first two games. I think we tried a few more things because we weren’t getting what we wanted early on. We didn’t judge the wicket properly in regards to our areas.”We went into defensive mode as soon as we had one or two bad overs. It created more problems. We should have stuck to our attacking mode like we did in the last two games. I think we moved away from that plan.”But he also felt that a poor start with the bat, chasing 281 runs, and their inability to sustain the recovery also didn’t help. Bangladesh slumped to 11 for 3 in the fourth over after which Shakib Al Hasan and Soumya Sarkar added 77 runs for the fourth wicket. But what compounded their difficulties was the 16 runs between Mosaddek Hossain and Mahmudullah, who looked in fine touch in the first ODI.”When we played the practice match, we understood that the Colombo wicket becomes flatter in the second half,” Mashrafe said. “They perhaps made 20 runs more, but if you follow Miraz’s batting [Mehedi made 51 at No. 8] you could see clearly that the wicket didn’t have anything.”Perhaps the new balls swung from both ends but Soumya and Shakib could have dragged on their partnership a bit further and if the next two batsmen could have made a big contribution, we could have won the game. We needed 70-odd off the last 36 balls, so I think if we had wickets in hand, things would have been different for us.”But he said that they would take lessons from such games where they had to fight back from a difficult position. “We made a comeback as a bowling group in this game, having done poorly in the first ten overs,” he said. “I think we bowled well in the first ten overs in the second ODI in Dambulla, but still went on to concede 300-plus total. It is a lesson for us, how to turn around from a bad start.”

Popularity soars for county-based T20, study suggests

A new report suggests the popularity of domestic T20 cricket in England rose sharply during 2016.The YouGov SportsIndex Report 2017 places the NatWest Blast among the top 10 sporting events in terms of public perception for the first time. The report comes as the ECB executive continue plans to launch a new T20 competition on top of the NatWest Blast in the belief that the county system will not deliver a tournament of maximum impact. The SportsIndex report analyses the performance of overall recent public awareness and sentiment of news about leading UK and international sports competitions events by interviewing 100 people each day. Respondents are asked: “Over the past two weeks, which of the following sporting events have you heard something positive/negative about?”It them measures the ‘buzz’ about each event by defining the net difference between the amount of respondents hearing positive news and those hearing negative news in the previous two weeks. Buzz may also be negative if the event has been subject to a high level of negative publicity. The report states: “Twenty20 Cricket is English cricket’s 2016 success story, with efforts to re-position and market the game as an all-round entertainment spectacle seriously paying off and contributing to its much-improved buzz score.”The 2016 Olympics was rated as the top event, with the Paralympics third and the Six Nations fourth. Wimbledon (tennis) was second with the Tour de France rated fifth. The Premier League (football) was rated sixth with the NatWest Blast in seventh position. Test cricket was ranked eighth. The NatWest Blast competition was ranked 21st in the previous year. While the NatWest Blast was branded a “mediocre” competition by ECB chairman Colin Graves on its eve in 2016, tickets sales have grown by 63 per-cent over the last four years. The Blast has been built on the principle of appointment to view – playing games at a predictable time, usually Friday evenings – across all 18 first-class counties, although has been abandoned for 2017 with the tournament taking place in a more condensed midsummer slot. The envisaged new competition moves away from the long-established professional circuit and will feature games every night of the week and be based in only eight main centres. It also comes as it emerges that the number of tickets sold for games for the 2016 competition may have reached 950,000. ECB figures exclude all sales from games which are subsequently abandoned due to bad weather and declared a figure of 815,609, down from 827,654 in 2016. There were 15 abandoned fixtures in 2016 and seven in 2015.

‘Couldn’t get close to him’ – Weston McKennie picks out player that had the USMNT chasing shadows in 3-1 defeat to Germany

Weston McKennie admits that the USMNT “couldn’t get close to” to Ilkay Gundogan as the Barcelona star ran the show in a 3-1 friendly win for Germany.

The United States took the lead in that contest courtesy of a spectacular first-half strike from AC Milan forward Christian Pulisic, but the game was level by the interval and the hosts ran out of steam in the second 45 as the German visitors to Hartford, Connecticut moved through the gears.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Gundogan restored parity for Germany, and McKennie concedes that the former Manchester City captain had his American rivals chasing shadows.

Juventus midfielder McKennie told : “We had a great start to the game, the energy levels were high. I'm sure they went inside [at half-time] and saw how they could hurt us. I think the pressing in the second half, for us, we kind of got a little bit disorganised. I mean, a player like Gundogan, if you leave him a little space, he punishes you, and that's what he was doing, he was building up and made it very difficult for us. I feel like we couldn’t really get close to him, we were just defending in our box the whole time.”

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Niclas Fullkrug and Jamal Masiala were also on target for Germany, with McKennie aware that the USMNT have things to work on tactically before facing Ghana next Tuesday.

He added: “We could have been a little bit better at preventing the counter-attacks or the long balls in behind the backline, because Germany has speed up top for sure, and their little switches that they had, just closing the middle down, I think would have helped a lot. But Gregg’s a tactician, so we'll definitely go in and look at video and then review it and see how we could have done better.”

Messi is in contention for an eighth Ballon d’Or in 2023 – having inspired his country to World Cup glory at Qatar 2022 – and has made an immediate impact in the United States since leaving European football at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain to go chasing the American dream at Inter Miami.

WHAT THEY SAID

Ganso is among those that consider Messi to be superhuman, with the Brazil international midfielder having come up against the South American icon at the Club World Cup several years ago.

Quizzed by FIFA’s on whether the Barca side that Santos faced that day is better than the Manchester City one that won a Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League Treble last season, Ganso said: “Barcelona. This City side is outstanding, but Barcelona had a fantastic XI and an ET, the genius of world football. He’s simply a genius. You can’t help but admire him. That was in 2011. You look at him now, how he has evolved, and it’s difficult to believe. He seems to get better and better every year. It was a privilege to see Messi play up close. Like I said, Messi is an ET.”

Leeds: 49ers Could Now Appoint "Crazy" Rodgers Upgrade

Leeds United have had to readjust their managerial expectations following the supposed failure to land Brendan Rodgers, but one man on their shortlist could actually pose a surprise upgrade.

What's the latest on Carlos Corberan to Leeds United?

In a report outlined by The Guardian, there is a showcase of other names that the 49ers will seek to interview in the coming weeks.

One particular head coach stands out, as the West Bromwich Albion boss Carlos Corberan not only has prior history at Elland Road but has shone in the Championship of late.

Whilst their prime target seems set to return to Celtic, this Spaniard offers a more than viable alternative, one that is arguably better suited to their current plight and therefore an improvement on the Northern Irishman.

Is Carlos Corberan better than Brendan Rodgers?

Whilst Rodgers has spent time at the level the Whites find themselves at, it has not been since 2011 when he guided Swansea City into the Premier League. Ever since then his path has been at a much higher level, and the belief he is above stepping back down should present an almighty red flag for the west Yorkshire outfit.

Meanwhile, Corberan is shining in his second role in the division, having first taken an unlikely Huddersfield Town side into the playoffs, only to lose to eventual winners Nottingham Forest.

His work at the Hawthorns has arguably been at a similar level, having masterminded the turnaround from relegation candidates under Steve Bruce to true promotion chasers last term. \

During his 33 games in charge of the Baggies, he maintains a 1.70 points-per-match average, having won 17 and conceded just 37 goals, via Transfermarkt.

In fact, across all of his matches in the Championship, he boasts 51 wins from 122 games (41.8%).

For comparison, Rodgers only maintained a 1.49 points-per-game average during his spell in the second division, just below the 1.50 of Corberan.

To acquire the 40-year-old gem would also be to invest in a coach brimming with fresh ideas, able to lead the club into a brighter future. He would join already in great form, whilst Rodgers was dismissed just before his Foxes side succumbed to the drop.

In an effort to emphasise the revolutionary ideals of the ex-Olympiacos boss, former Whites starlet Romario Vieira told The Athletic exactly what made him such a special tactician:

"In six months with him. I developed 10 times more than in my first year. The way he wanted us to play, everyone was like, ‘This guy’s crazy’.

“He was always insisting on it. Even though we weren’t getting it right, we were always doing it and when we started to get it right, that’s when everything clicked. I was, like, ‘This guy’s a genius’."

brendan-rodgers-leicester

Whilst Rodgers also occupies that same 4-2-3-1 style as his potential alternative, it could be argued that the minor details between their philosophies obviously have huge repercussions on the respective form of their sides.

One of these two coaches is slowly building a platform for unlimited managerial success, whilst the other is returning to an old job out of comfort following a disappointing spell and sacking.

The 49ers might have failed in their first pursuit, but it could prove a stroke of fortune should they manage to tempt this fine substitute, who will know too well what it's like to be at Elland Road, making him a fine, fine upgrade for the club.

Blues icon out on tourPhotos and signatures up for grabsFunds going to his foundationWHAT HAPPENED?

The Blues icon is giving supporters an opportunity to hear stories from his playing days during a series of four shows in Basingstoke. Tickets are priced at £25, while anybody wanting to dine with the ex-England defender will need to part with £500.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT THEY SAID

Terry has faced criticism for supposedly profiting from a loyal fan base, but he has hit back at that coverage by pointing out that all proceeds go to his John Terry 26 Foundation that supports various charities. He has said on : “Hi guys, just wanted to touch on the stories the press are writing about me charging fans £100 for signatures and photos and drinks or whatever that may be. The big thing – and this is very important – the big thing that they forgot to mention is that all proceeds from these events that I’ve been doing – and the only reason that I signed up – is to raise money for my foundation, for the John Terry 26 Foundation.

“I set my foundation up about seven or eight months ago because I wanted to do something personal and on my own where I’m going to be eventually hosting a gala dinner, golf events throughout the year, any opportunities to raise money for my foundation. I’ve been working very closely with various different charities over the last 22 years being Chelsea captain and seeing a lot of terminal and ill and sick children along the way, which is something that’s always been something very close to my heart and always will be. So rather than doing it for one specific charity, I’ve been focusing on my own foundation in the last six or seven months. And this tour that I’m doing, this Q&A that I’m doing, is part of that.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Terry went on to say: “But like I said, the key thing that the press have forgotten to write is that all proceeds from this event [will go to charity]. And I didn’t want this publicised, and I agreed this with the guys, because I don’t think it’s right for me to publicise that.

"But now they’ve raised the issue I will address it. So every penny from these events goes towards my John Terry 26 Foundation. I apologise for coming out a day or two days late, but I’ll touch on why I didn’t touch on this yesterday: because, again, I was at another charity day working for BGC in London with obviously the very sad news of the World Trade Centres and something that I’ve done for the last five or six years and I’ll continue to do. But again, giving up my time, giving up my day, for all these charities is something that’s very important to me and I’ll never stop that. Really frustrating for me actually and I’m just fed up with the press writing sh*t over and over again.”
