Tom Lawes stirs Surrey ambition as uncertainty stalks the land

Kent buckle down in pursuit of survival and who-knows-what-else come season’s end

Paul Edwards28-Jun-2022Towards the back of what will always be known as the Peter May Stand at the Kia Oval a small encampment has been created. There is a canopied seating area with open sides and you might call the thing a gazebo if that description did not sound incongruous in an urban setting of concrete and glass. And one hesitates to dub the place a redoubt before checking the definition and finding the following: “a temporary or supplementary fortification, typically square or polygonal and without flanking defences”. That sounds better, not least because those sitting under the canvas clearly have something to defend. “No City Franchises – Save Our Cricket” declares one of their banners. “Peter May Boys” announces another. I think we get the picture. Let’s assume the Boys didn’t contribute to Tom Harrison’s leaving gift. But it would be pleasant if every county’s guardians declared their loyalties so plainly. As one watched 19-year-old Tom Lawes delight both himself and all Surrey supporters by taking two important wickets in successive overs just before lunch and then another shortly after the resumption, it came as a renewed shock to realise that the 18 first-class teams have only a limited idea what they are playing for.Actually, of course, that is not altogether correct. The season is barely half over and a clutch of sides in both divisions have their eyes on their respective titles. Just as significantly, a four-day, first-class match is an intense affair in which the players invest considerable physical and emotional capital. Winning is important and careers depend on the outcome of such games. So Lawes’s joy when he bowled Jack Leaning off the inside edge for 75 and then had Ollie Robinson caught at fine gully by Ryan Patel carried both collective and personal significance. It began a slow collapse that saw Kent lose their last seven wickets for 91 runs and be forced to follow-on 342 runs behind. For his part, Lawes strolled off this great field with figures of 4 for 51 against his name in what is his first Championship match. At the same time, all English seasons since the introduction of two divisions have offered the prospect of promotion and the jeopardy of relegation. This summer, recommendations as to next year’s structure will be made by Andrew Strauss’s high-performance review panel before being polished by a small group of carefully chosen county chief-executives and voted on by the county chairmen in the autumn. Only then might the mere players find out what their professional lives will be like in 2023. You need to be rather arrogant to develop such a plan but no less deranged to blame England’s Ashes defeat on county cricket in the first place. Perhaps someone should ask the ECB’s howl-at-the-moon crazies whether the domestic game is also responsible for the 3-0 victory against New Zealand. In the meantime, Surrey’s players will keep chasing what would be their county’s 20th outright title and Kent’s will keep on keeping on. The visitors’ chances of scoring the 523 they needed to avoid the follow-on were slim this morning but Daniel Bell-Drummond and Leaning had taken their side to 216 for 2 before their 161-run third wicket stand was ended when Bell-Drummond chased a wide offspinner from Will Jacks and skewed a catch to Hashim Amla at point. Lawes then took his first two wickets and induced George Linde to play on after lunch. Apart from Jordan Cox’s 47, the remainder of Kent’s batting never threatened to change the shape of a game the result of which will be dependent on its third innings. However, a mention in dispatches is required for the short leg catch by Ben Geddes off Connor McKerr that dismissed Jaz Singh and ended Kent’s innings. It was an absurdly good right-handed reflex effort and worthy of a more pivotal moment in any match. It was also Surrey’s final wicket of the day. Rather than be overwhelmed by a deficit of 342, Kent’s batted out the remaining 44 overs with some ease, thus leaving Surrey’s bowlers with plenty of work to do on a fourth-day pitch offering them limited assistance. Joe Denly, in only his second Championship innings of the season, is unbeaten on 63 and was the more expansive of the pair; his eight fours included flourished drives and a whack over mid-on against Jacks’ off spin. Ben Compton was more restrained but passed 1000 runs for the season and needs only four runs to reach fifty for the tenth time in 15 first-class innings. The contrast between the pair was beguiling and almost unexpectedly satisfying. Patel bowled the last over and by that time Rory Burns was trying to unsettle the batters with unorthodox fields, the sort some would label “funky”. There was a silly mid-on and silly mid-off posted when the final ball of the day was greeted with Denly’s resolute forward defensive. The players left the field and almost at once one wondered how many opportunities fine cricketers of Compton’s ilk might get should red-ball cricket be reduced to a niche activity, one whose only purpose is the production of Test players rather than also being concerned with the maintenance of strong counties and all the benefits they bring to clubs and communities across the land. Members and supporters around the country are expressing their views and it’s no use thinking it will be easy to find consensus. Me? I’m with Peter May Boys on their redoubt and a few county chairmen might also be receiving their call-up papers quite soon.

West Ham draw fresh plans to sign £40m star after Lopetegui identifies him

da prosport bet: West Ham United transfer chiefs have drawn up “fresh plans” to sign a £40 million player, with manager Julen Lopetegui personally identifying him as a possible new addition.

Lopetegui under pressure as West Ham eye new attackers

da brdice: Chairman David Sullivan and the Hammers hierarchy gave their green-light for technical director Tim Steidten to splash nearly £120 million on nine new signings in the summer, but their form hasn’t exactly reflected the new quality in Lopetegui’s squad so far.

What Julen Lopetegui has done to leave West Ham players very "surprised"

The Spaniard is dividing opinion behind the scenes.

ByEmilio Galantini Oct 2, 2024

West Ham are without a win in all competitions since late August, with their last victory coming against Bournemouth in the EFL Cup. Since then, Lopetegui has watched his side fall to Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City while also being held against Fulham and Brentford in the Premier League.

While it is still very early days, questions are being asked about West Ham’s lack of memorable moments in games, despite the quality and fresh new additions to choose from.

Some critics believe Lopetegui is at risk of losing his job if their form doesn’t pick up quickly, with West Ham also unable to call upon striker Niclas Füllkrug, who is still recovering from an achilles injury and unavailable for selection.

I think there’s more pressure on him after what David Moyes managed to do,” said ex-West Ham recruitment chief Mick Brown to Football Insider this week.

“When 60,000 people are saying they don’t want this and they want a different type of football, the board have had to be careful with their decision.

It’s always difficult trying to judge what the owners and directors will do. Their knowledge of the game is not great and they’ve made many mistakes in the past. They were warned to be careful what they wished for, but having made that decision [replacing Moyes with Lopetegui], they’re wary of making another mistake.

I don’t know Lopetegui and I don’t know how he works, but if we’re looking at the results he’s had so far, which is what the game is about, he’s definitely at risk.”

Fullkrug’s absence has exposed West Ham’s lack of striker depth, for both the present and for the long-term. Indeed, Danny Ings and Michail Antonio are on the wrong side of 30 and out of contract next summer, leading to the club’s reported interest in Eintracht Frankfurt star Omar Marmoush.

West Ham draw "fresh plans" to sign Marmoush after Lopetegui call

GiveMeSport have shared a fresh update this evening.

It is believed that West Ham have drawn up “fresh plans” to sign Marmoush, with Lopetegui personally earmarking the Egypt striker as a possible new signing at the who can give them that extra bite going forward.

Marmoush is also being chased by Newcastle United and Aston Villa, as all three Premier League sides prepare to battle it out over the £40 million forward’s signature at the turn of the year.

Omar Marmoush for Frankfurt.

The 25-year-old has started this campaign in absolutely electric form – scoring six goals and registering five assists in just seven games across all competitions – which has surely turned many heads in east London.

Praised for his “tireless” work rate by Eintracht boss Dino Toppmöller as well, other reports have claimed that Marmoush is “most likely” to join West Ham or Crystal Palace, so this could be one to watch heading into 2025.

Tanaka & "dangerous" star unleashed: Predicted Leeds lineup vs Burnley

Leeds United are back in action in the Championship on Saturday as they prepare to face off against Burnley at Elland Road in the early kick-off.

Daniel Farke and his coaching staff have had two weeks off, due to the international break, to get ready for this clash with the recently relegated outfit.

The Whites won their last two matches before the break, beating Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City, and will be hoping to continue that run of form this weekend.

Leeds are unbeaten in their first four matches of the Championship campaign, with two draws and two wins, and beat Hull 2-0 in their last match in the division.

Mateo Joseph and Joel Piroe scored the goals for the West Yorkshire side to secure all three points against Tim Walter's side but the result does not guarantee that the manager will keep an unchanged side.

Here is our predicted Leeds XI to take on Burnley at Elland Road on Saturday, with some changes from the line-up that was selected against the Tigers…

1 Illan Meslier

The French shot-stopper, Illan Meslier, has kept three clean sheets in his last three appearances in the Championship and should retain his position between the sticks.

Despite that, he has still let in 0.76 more goals than expected based on the xG against his goal in his four outings in the division this season, which suggests that there are still areas of his game that need work.

2 Jayden Bogle

At right-back, Jayden Bogle, who was signed from Sheffield United on a permanent deal during the summer, should be in the starting XI once again.

The English defender won nine of his 12 duels in the 2-0 win over Hull, whilst making four tackles and one interception, to help his side to a clean sheet.

3 Joe Rodon

Joe Rodon should keep his place at the heart of the defence for Leeds as he has started all four matches in the division and helped the team to keep three shutouts in that time.

However, the Wales international has only won 20% of his ground duels in the Championship so far, and that is a clear area of improvement for the central defender.

4 Pascal Struijk

On the left side of the defence, Pascal Struijk should pair Rodon because he has also started all four league matches as part of the impressive start to the season from a defensive perspective.

The 25-year-old Dutchman completed 96% of his attempted passes against Hull and made interceptions and one block to keep the ball away from Meslier's goal.

5 Junior Firpo

Junior Firpo

At left-back, Junior Firpo should be in the starting XI because he is the only naturally left-footed left-back option for Farke to select from his squad.

The attack-minded full-back assisted Piroe's goal against Hull, provided three key passes, and created one 'big chance' last time out for Leeds.

6 Ao Tanaka

The first change to the starting XI could come at the base of the midfield for the Whites, with Ao Tanaka coming into the side to replace Ilia Gruev.

Against high-quality opposition in Burnley, Leeds may need more of a goal threat from midfield to give themselves the best chance of coming away with all three points.

Gruev has produced zero goals and one assist in 33 regular season matches in the Championship so far in his career, which suggests that he does not offer much at the top end of the pitch.

Whereas, Tanaka, who signed from Fortuna Dusseldorf last month, racked up seven goals and three assists in 30 2. Bundesliga matches last season, which suggests that he has more to offer than Gruev as an attacking threat from a midfield position.

7 Ethan Ampadu

Selecting Ethan Ampadu to start in the middle of the park for Leeds should be an easy decision for Farke to make, as he is the captain of the team.

The Wales international has started all 50 of the manager's regular season matches in charge of the club to date, which speaks to how much he trusts the midfielder week-in-week-out.

8 Wilfried Gnonto

On the right side of the attack, Wilfried Gnonto should retain his place in the starting XI. Dan James has been ruled out for a month with a hamstring injury, which means that there is not as much competition for that spot in the side.

The Italy U21 international completed 96% of his attempted passes and created one 'big chance' for his teammates in the win over Hull last time out.

9 Joel Piroe

Joel Piroe

The second and final change to the starting XI could come in the attacking midfield position, as Joel Piroe could be unleashed from the start over Brenden Aaronson.

During the international break, Aaronson played 66 minutes for the USA in America against New Zealand on Wednesday and the quick turn-around, with this clash against Burnley at 12:30 pm on Saturday, might mean that he will not be 100% ready for this clash.

The attacking midfielder, who has scored two goals in four games this season, does not deserve to be dropped but his international exploits may factor into this decision.

That would then open the door for Piroe, who was once hailed as "dangerous" by journalist Josh Bunting, to be unleashed after he came off the bench to score in the 2-0 win over Hull.

10 Manor Solomon

On the left side of the attack, summer signing Manor Solomon should start for the second time since his season-long loan move from Tottenham Hotspur.

The winger provided a fantastic assist for Joseph's opener against Hull last time out, with a driving run down the left flank before whipping a superb cross into the front post area.

Questions from the kids, and a bit about Jaisimha

In which the next generation of Zaltzmans gets enthusiastic about the shortest form of the game

Andy Zaltzman25-Feb-2013Thank you for your responses to last week’s blog on English interest in the IPL, which provoked some lively and varied reactions. Some agreed with my viewpoints, others did not. Some in a more strongly worded manner than others. Several Indian readers expressed a similar lack of emotional connection with the tournament, some from elsewhere in the cricketing world have fallen for the new-fangled charms of the talent-packed short-form spectacular. The IPL continues to be the biggest issue in the game at the moment. It clearly arouses strong and divergent opinions, in India and outside. I do not, however, think there is any element of “English jealousy” involved. Test match fans the world over – whether they love, hate, or remain undecided about Twenty20 as a format ‒ are rightly concerned about the impact it is having, and will inevitably continue to have, on the game they love. Its effects have already been seen in international schedules, team line-ups, players’ techniques, and the volume and unchangeability of the excitement in the voices of stadium announcers.Clearly, T20 and the IPL have done and will do much good for the game globally. They could also, in some ways, do irreparable harm. The balls are, literally and metaphorically, up in the air, swirling around in the floodlights after cricket took an almighty swish with its eyes partially closed, and we do not yet know if those balls will land safely pouched in our hands, splash messily into our plastic beer glasses, or plummet hard and fast straight on the bridge of our cricket-loving nose. Or a combination of all three. The anxieties many people have about the future of the game are nothing to do with national affiliation.A final footnote to last week’s piece (which, I would like to stress, I did not intend to be an “anti-IPL” piece, still less an “anti-Indian” one, nor do I think it was one)… During my children’s supper time on Monday evening, we watched the closing stages of the republican-minded IPL fan’s nightmare match-up between Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Rajasthan Royals, won easily by Bangalore after some characteristically brilliant striking by the Virtuoso of the Veldt, AB de Villiers. My children, aged five and three, asked a range of questions of varying pertinence, from “Is he out?”, “Why has that man got big gloves on?”, and “Why do the blue team keep hitting the ball in the air?”, to “Whatever happened to getting your foot to the pitch of the ball, keeping your front elbow high, and stroking the ball along the ground?” (The last of those questions may, on reflection, have been asked not by my offspring but by the ghost of Gubby Allen, who had popped round unexpectedly for a cup of tea and a quick haunt.)With a few overs remaining, my daughter chose to support the Royal Challengers, largely because I told her they were by this stage definitely going to win, but partly also because I had been to Bangalore. We have therefore picked the RCB as our team for the rest of the tournament, thus giving us the not-quite-umbilical emotional connection to an IPL franchise that I wrote about English viewers generally lacking. I am taking her to the tattoo parlour tomorrow morning to have a portrait of Vinay Kumar inked indelibly onto her bicep. Whilst I go into surgery to attempt to have my hair rendered as gloriously luxuriant as Zaheer Khan’s. It may be a long operation. These early encounters with cricket can prove deeply influential – my children may well grow up thinking that RCB’s four-wicket hero KP Appanna is the greatest bowler in the history of the game, just as I grew up convinced that Chris Tavaré was the inviolable blueprint for the art of batsmanship. After supper, we retired to the children’s bedroom, armed with a plastic cricket bat and ball, and for the first time in their young lives, the junior Zaltzmans showed genuine interest when their daddy tried to make them play cricket. My son displayed a penchant for leg-side drives that can only have come from his mother’s side of the family (if he had sliced everything through gully, any paternity issues would have been verifiably laid to rest), whilst my daughter clonked a straight six ‒ all the way to the curtain on the other side of the room, a mighty carry of some 10 or 12 feet ‒ of which Ian Botham himself would have been proud. If their strokeplay was a little on the agricultural side of the MCC Coaching Manual, their youth and inexperience can probably be held responsible more than the IPL hoicking they had just been watching.Would the same youthful enthusiasm have been created if I had switched over to the West Indies v Australia Test match? Probably not. The children’s questions would certainly have been different – “Why aren’t they hitting the ball in the air?”; “Whatever happened to the concept of risk-taking initiative in Australian batsmanship?”; “Why are both teams wearing white?”; “Why are you so interested in this, daddy?”; and “Why isn’t Chris Gayle playing?” To all of which, the answers would have been: “It’s complicated, darling. It’s complicated. Eat your broccoli.”● Australia’s left-arm tweaker Michael Beer is few people’s idea of the spiritual descendant of McGrath, Lillee, Davidson, Lindwall and Spofforth. But last week, in just his second Test, he became the latest addition to the illustrious line of baggy green new-ball tearaways. History will probably judge Beer to not have been the most terrifying opening bowler in the history of Test cricket, particularly on the ground where Curtly Ambrose’s soul-curdling new-ball spell in 1994 obliterated the cream of English batsmanship like a divorced steamroller squishing the bowl of satsumas that had run off with its wife.Nonetheless, Beer became the first Aussie spinner to bowl the first ball of a Test match since Bill O’Reilly in 1938, and ‒ possibly ‒ the first spinner to bowl the first over in both innings of a Test match since 1909.Possibly, but not definitely. My dear, dear friend Statsguru, a trusted and loyal companion on many journeys through the strangely chirping jungles of cricket statistics, a source of refuge and comfort in an increasingly troublesome world, enables the curious-minded (by which I mean, those with nothing better to do) to tick a box to find only statistics relating to those defined as “spin bowlers”. The Guru and I therefore searched for tweakmen who had bowled the first over in two innings of a Test. This is the result of that search. The almost-all-knowing Statsguru lists 1960s Indian batting stylist and part-time bowler ML Jaisimha as the only other spinner to have bowled the first over in both innings of a Test since mystery wrist spinner Douglas Carr did so for England in his only Test, at The Oval in 1909. I conveyed this information to an understandably ambivalent universe via Twitter, the 21st-century’s version of shouting at traffic.Moments later, thanks to the magic of technology, the renowned Indian cricket writer Ayaz Memon had tweeted back to inform me that Jaisimha, in defiance of his official Statsguru accreditation, had also bowled seamers on a fairly regular basis, proving that, sometimes at least, human beings, with their rather more nuanced memory chips, still have the edge over computers.Ayaz described Jaisimha as a childhood hero (as he also was, apparently, to Sunil Gavaskar), who was “stylish, charismatic, an astute captain, and loads of fun” (qualities which Michael Beer may or may not prove to share, although the early two-Test evidence of his career is that he probably does not share all of them).I admit that Jaisimha had been little more to me than a name on vaguely remembered scorecards, before Ayaz furnished me with this microbiography hinting at an engrossing cricketer. The internet is a remarkable tool that enables the human race to share everything instantly and globally ‒ its life-changing scientific discoveries, its revolutionary innovations, its artistic creations, its political movements, its boobs, and most importantly, its articles about cricketers from times gone by, from an age before Jaisimha’s Test average of 30 would have been dissected, harangued and yelped about on message boards and chat forums. So here is some more on Jai, a player who clearly enchanted his contemporaries as well as confused the mighty Statsguru.Duly corrected, I returned to a chastened and apologetic Statsguru and broadened the search remit to include that most enigmatic of bowling categories – “mixture/unknown”. And I can (almost) confirm that it is (perhaps) a fact that Beer is (in all probability) the first spinner to bowl the first ball in both innings of a Test Match for over 100 years. He might not be, but he probably is, and at the very least he is now entitled to treat himself by slapping on a Dennis Lillee headband, twizzling out a Fred Spofforth moustache, and going to bed in commemorative Ray Lindwall pyjamas. Even if he has been left out of the third Test.

£48m star who Arsenal are in pole position for opens door for 2025 transfer

da aviator aposta: One of Arsenal's chief transfer targets has opened the door to a 2025 move after being the subject of strong speculation all summer, with Mikel Arteta's side reportedly in pole position to land him were he to leave for the Premier League.

Arsenal missing superstar number nine

da realbet: Ahead of the summer transfer window, an attacker was high up on the list of Arsenal's priorities despite the form of Kai Havertz. According to The Athletic, "the feeling among the hierarchy was that the team lacked a certain X-factor in attack — something special to unlock defences on the biggest occasions".

They were initially linked with Benjamin Sesko, only for the RB Leipzig striker to opt to remain in Germany and pen a new deal at the club, though it could be a deal that is revisited in 12 months' time.

RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko

In the end, they managed to seal a deadline day loan for Raheem Sterling, who may well fix some of their problems in attack this season. Though now 29-years-old, the England international has worked under Mikel Arteta at Manchester City and can play across the frontline, offering yet more versatility to the Arsenal boss.

He has also played with Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus, Declan Rice, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Jorginho and Kai Havertz for either club or country, which should allow him to settle into the Arsenal squad relatively quickly and make an instant impact.

However, Sterling's deal has no option or obligation to make the move permanent at the end of the loan spell, which means that barring a drastic change of circumstances he will be back at Stamford Bridge come the end of the season and likely to move on from there, with Arsenal's policy of signing younger players likely to prevent them from pursuing a deal. Now, their no.1 target may have just made himself available instead.

La Liga winger opens door to move

That comes as Nico Williams has opened the door to a potential departure from boyhood club Athletic Club next summer. The Spaniard, who starred at EURO 2024 as he helped Spain lift the trophy, was the subject of strong interest from Barcelona and the Premier League over the summer, but opted to turn down any interest in favour of remaining at the Basque club, where he plays alongside his brother Inaki.

"Outstanding" player rejected chance to make Arsenal move on deadline day

He chose to stay put…

ByTom Cunningham Sep 2, 2024

But now, he has suggested that he may not be there for too much longer, revealing that he chose this summer to remain with Bilbao for "another year" and hinting at a 2025 exit.

“There were approaches from many clubs [this summer]. I did well at the Euros and that’s a great showcase,” Williams explained. “I had many clubs to choose from but my heart is with Athletic Club. I’m happy here and I’m very happy here. God knows what will happen in the future.

“It has already been shown that I am happy here, those things are carried out by my agent", he added. "I have already decided to be here for another year, to continue growing at Athletic, that is the important thing now. I’ve had offers to do other things that another player would have done, but I’ve decided to continue for another year.”

He is believed to have a £48m release clause in his contract, which interested clubs could trigger next summer should they wish to, though they will of course have to agree personal terms too.

It has also been reported that, of the Premier League clubs to show an interest in Williams, Arsenal would be the most attractive to the youngster. Though Barcelona remain keen on a union, their financial situation may make a lump sum payment impossible following the arrival of Dani Olmo, leaving the Gunners in pole position. Could Sterling's departure at the end of the season allow the Gunners to finally realise their dream transfer?

Watch out Livramento: Newcastle can send Trippier packing with £25m target

Kieran Trippier has been an excellent addition for Newcastle United following his £12m move to the club from Atlético Madrid back in January 2022.

He’s provided quality and experience to Eddie Howe’s backline, playing a crucial role in the club’s recent success that has seen them qualify for the Champions League for the first time in over two decades, having notably been hailed a "revelation" by talkSPORT's Simon Jordan.

However, with the England international now 33, he’s coming towards the tail end of his professional career, as demonstrated by his failure to appear off the bench against Southampton in the first Premier League outing of the season last weekend.

Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier.

He’s since been linked with a move to Everton ahead of the transfer deadline next Friday, with the Toffees eyeing a loan move for the right-back.

His lack of game time could hand one other first-team member a consistent run as a starter after a stop-start beginning to his Magpies career.

Tino Livramento’s Newcastle career so far

Full-back Tino Livramento only arrived at St James’ Park last summer in a £40m deal from Southampton after the Saints suffered relegation to the Championship at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

His first full season on Tyneside was an inconsistent one, only making 12 starts in the Premier League, utilised as a backup to Trippier or as cover in an unnatural left-back role.

However, he started the opening day victory against his former side last Saturday, with Howe giving him the opportunity to stake his claim for a regular starting role – especially after the latest development on Trippier’s future.

The youngster was part of the backline that kept a clean sheet, whilst winning all 100% of the tackles that he entered and winning 60% of his ground duels.

Despite his impressive display, he could find himself as a backup once more if the club complete a deal for one player who’s recently impressed in the Premier League.

Newcastle could land £25m Trippier replacement

This summer has been a relatively quiet one for Newcastle, with only four new signings, but given Trippier’s current situation, they may be forced to make a late move in the transfer window.

The Magpies have previously been touted with a move to land Nottingham Forest right-back Neco Williams, with the Reds demanding a fee in the region of £25m to part ways with the Welsh international.

23-year-old Williams has been a key player under Nuno Espírito Santo since his appointment back in December, winning three consecutive Player of the Month awards, potentially forcing Livramento to return to the substitutes bench.

When comparing the duo’s respective stats from last season, the former Liverpool ace comes out on top in various key areas – highlighting what an excellent addition he would be for Howe’s side.

The “relentless” Forest ace, as described by football writer Leanne Prescott, attempted more tackles per 90 along with 2.4 blocks – showcasing his excellent defensive capabilities.

However, Williams was just as impressive going forward, completing more take-ons per 90, whilst also attempting more crosses, potentially falling straight into the hands of star man Alexander Isak.

Whilst Livramento undoubtedly has the ability to be the club’s starting right-back, Williams has demonstrated he has all the qualities to displace the Englishman on Tyneside.

£25m in today's market is a bargain for a player of his quality, with Howe's side needing to act quickly to secure a deal for the Welshman before the transfer deadline in just seven days' time.

India docked one WTC point for over-rate offence in Centurion Test

Team also fined 20% of match fee for the offence

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Jan-2022India have been docked a point on the World Test Championship (WTC) points table for falling short of their required over rate during the Centurion Test against South Africa. They were deemed to be one over short of their target, after allowing for unavoidable delays. As per ICC rules, teams lose one point for each over they are short. The players were also fined 20% of their match fee. The sanctions were imposed by match referee Andy Pycroft. The umpires for the Test, Marais Erasmus, Adrian Holdstock, Allahudien Paleker and Bongani Jele, had levelled the charge and India captain Virat Kohli accepted the offence and sanction, so there was no formal hearing.India had also lost two WTC points in August 2021 for maintaining a slow over rate in the Nottingham Test. Losing points over over-rate offences could prove costly in the run to the WTC final, which will be in 2023.Australia had a taste of this in the inaugural WTC cycle, which ran from 2019-21 – they were docked four points for a slow over rate during the 2020 Melbourne Test against India, and eventually just missed out on making the final, with India and eventual champions New Zealand going through. The WTC finalists are decided by percentage of points won, and based on that criteria Australia, Sri Lanka and Pakistan currently sit above India on the 2021-23 table. The change in the points system from actual points won to the percentage of points won was forced by the Covid-19 pandemic, which caused various series to be postponed or cancelled, meaning participating teams would not all play an equal number of matches during the WTC cycle.
