Chopra: Gulf between India, West Indies there for everyone to see

Ravindra Jadeja has been building a case to be one of the best allrounders in the game. A four-for to follow a hundred against West Indies to start the new home season was just the latest evidence he offered in favour of that argument. On the back of his 104 not out and 4 for 54, India completed an innings win with two-and-a-half days to spare.A proud record stood tall between February 22, 2013 and October 25, 2024. It buckled 24 hours later. India lost a Test series on home soil for the first time in nearly 12 years. Many of the players who had contributed to that run are now retired, including Virat Kohli, R Ashwin and Cheteshwar Pujara. But Jadeja remains. He was there when India began that run against Australia in Chennai. He was there when New Zealand broke them last year in Pune. And he was there once again, lifting them back up against West Indies now. At 36 years old, it is unclear how much cricket is left in him but it was poetic that in the first of 66 Tests that India had to play at home without R Ashwin, his old pal came up with a hundred and a four-for.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Alick Athanaze carried the West Indies flag, showing why he is rated as a good player of spin. He picked up length well. He was decisive going forward or back. And he remembered to put pressure back, two rock-solid reverse sweeps for four and one sumptuous cover drive for three highlighted his process. All of those scoring shots were against half-volleys that were well wide of the stumps. This is the judgment and the competence that convinced the coach Daren Sammy and the management to bring him back into the Test side.India, though, kept placing new threats in front of Athanaze. Jasprit Bumrah hit him on the helmet. Washington Sundar tested him with the ball turning away. They were waiting for Athanaze to be just slightly off with his process and eventually, after 73 balls, he was, closing the face of the bat, baited by an offbreak that pitched on middle. Washington took a simple catch, which then led to a symbolic representation of West Indies’ batting in this Test.Jomel Warrican tried to impose himself on Mohammed Siraj, swinging as hard as he could, only for his bat to fly out of his grip and land at square leg. The ball meanwhile settled in mid-off’s hands.Alick Athanaze offered some resilience for West Indies•Getty Images

West Indies are a side still building its best batters. Ahead of this tour, they were shorn of two of their best bowlers. This informed the challenge they could pose. They are struggling to find a better opener than John Campbell, 32, who is the third-most experienced player in this XI. He has 23 caps and in all that time, he has no centuries. Even in first-class cricket, after 101 matches, he has only nine centuries. In Ahmedabad, he fell for 8 and 14. The only slightly younger Tagenarine Chanderpaul finished with 0 and 8. Top-order returns like that just won’t do.Jadeja is sometimes accused of being that left-arm spinner who just fires the ball in and lets the pitch do its work. But he knows how to work batters out too. He saw Brandon King lunging forward to try and smother the turn and that helped him once. He hit a crisp cover drive for four. It also led to his downfall as Jadeja recalibrated his flight. It was still full so it triggered King’s instinct to get on the front foot. But he had no way of getting to the pitch of this one. Having committed to the shot, he ended up vulnerable to the turn and presented a straightforward catch to slip. All this happened in the space of two overs. In that small period of time, Jadeja turned what the batter thought was a strength into a weakness.Siraj was the other bowler among the wickets, taking five or more over the course of a home Test for the first time.West Indies lost 10 wickets in two sessions on the first day. They did it again on the third day. Only two players got into the 30s. Only two faced 50 or more balls. They have five days to address these problems before the start of the second game in Delhi. The wait to win a Test match against India in India, which is into its 31st year, continues.

Forget Gyokeres: Man Utd moving to sign "one of the best CFs in the world"

da bet7: The transition period between managers was always going to be a tricky one for Manchester United, especially when considering the drastic change in formation.

da bet vitoria: However, Ruben Amorim has quickly seen the issues that lie within his Red Devils squad, losing 3-2 to Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Saturday night.

Two unforced errors from goalkeeper Andre Onana sent the club to a second consecutive Premier League defeat after losing to Arsenal just a couple of days prior.

The two defeats have seen five goals conceded, with question marks still being presented about the backline and whether it’s able to succeed under the 39-year-old’s guidance.

However, despite that, the new boss is targeting more reinforcements in attacking areas to try and bolster their threat within the final third of the pitch, with one player of interest in recent days.

Man Utd targeting move for 17-goal striker

According to reports from Caught Offside, United are in the race to sign Lille striker Jonathan David after his impressive start to the 2024/25 campaign. It’s stated that talks with the player’s entourage have been held as INEOS aim to add more firepower to the squad.

However, they aren’t alone, with Arsenal also credited with an interest in signing the 24-year-old Canada international in the next couple of months.

David has registered 17 goals in all competitions so far this season, drawing huge attention, with his contract set to expire in June, which could allow for a pre-contract agreement with any of the aforementioned clubs.

It’s unclear how much a deal for the striker would cost given his contract situation, but it’s evident that from his current goalscoring figures, he would be able to provide that added quality Amorim is desiring.

It could see them delay any attempts to land a striker who’s been on the lips of many United supporters given his connection with the new manager.

How David compares to Viktor Gyokeres in 2024/25

Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres has been one of the most clinical strikers in world football over the last couple of years, producing some phenomenal stats in the process.

The Swede played under Amorim for two years in Portugal, amassing over 60 goals in the process, including a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League a couple of months ago.

However, any deal for the 26-year-old would be at least £60m, a fee that may be out of range for United given their recent cost-cutting efforts since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival in the North West.

As a result, David could be viewed as a cheaper alternative to Gyokeres, but one that would be just as effective, especially when delving into his figures this season, matching or bettering the former Coventry City star in various key areas.

The Canadian, who’s previously been dubbed as “one of the best strikers in the world” by journalist Tony Marinaro, may have registered slightly fewer goal contributions compared to the Swede, but he has matched him for goals per shot on target this campaign.

He’s also completed more take-ons, with a higher pass accuracy, providing a more all-round option, allowing him to feature at the top end of the pitch, but also in a slightly deeper role behind the striker.

Given his current contract option, he would be a cheap alternative to Gyokeres, but that’s not to say that he wouldn’t have the same impact as the Swede for the Red Devils.

As seen from the table, he’s clearly able to produce some bonkers numbers, in a higher quality division, potentially allowing him to seamlessly transition into life in England’s top flight.

The competition for his signature is likely to be fierce, but given Amorim’s ambitions at Old Trafford, it may be an exciting proposition for the attacker – one which he could become a key part of in the coming years should they secure his services.

David Ornstein shares what he's heard from Man Utd on Amorim's Old Trafford future

da dobrowin: Manchester United and Ruben Amorim bounced back with a win against Sunderland on Saturday, and a key update has now emerged over the manager’s future.

Amorim's future still in doubt after Sunderland win

da 888casino: Admittedly, opting to relieve managers of their duties over the years hasn’t necessarily made Manchester United a better side. Still, pressure is continuing to grow on Amorim as he attempts to arrest his side’s slump in form.

Gareth Southgate has been linked to the Old Trafford hotseat and could be a safe option in light of his steady progress with England, and Peter Crouch believes that if a change is coming in the dugout, the ex-Three Lions boss is an ideal fit to step in.

He said via The Mirror: “I love Gareth (and) he’s had some stick unfairly. He took us to the finals. It was frustrating, you know, not to get over the line. If he won one game, then would there be a statue of him.

“He’s gone from a statue to people thinking he’s not good enough for the Man United job. It’s such a fine line in football. I think he’s someone that could build something there. You keep getting managers over that are here for the short term, like I think Gareth Southgate is someone who can build something big.”

Reportedly, Manchester United would need to pay £12 million to sack Amorim, which would be a hefty price to pay if they decide he is not the right man to take them forward, and a cost which they can now avoid at least a little longer after Saturday’s rather comfortable 2-0 victory against the Black Cats at Old Trafford.

"First class" manager who brings "fun factor" to training speaks about links to Man Utd

Ruben Amorim is under increasing pressure…

ByBen Goodwin Oct 3, 2025

Either way, there needs to be some clarity one way or another; something that Ornstein now looks to have provided in his latest update on events at Old Trafford.

David Ornstein shares how Man Utd feel about Ruben Amorim

Speaking to NBC Sports, Ornstein made it clear that Man Utd are keeping faith in Amorim and both parties want to keep moving forward in the right direction, while he still retains the backing of the squad.

He said: “Ruben Amorim is under major pressure, but I think most of that pressure is applied on him by himself, as well as the burden of being Manchester United manager. Manchester United themselves, as I understand, they’re not planning to sack him. They don’t want or intend to, and I don’t think he’s planning to walk away from this.

“Last season, I think he really felt the strain, and people I speak to say he was questioning if he could succeed there. But I do think, incrementally, there is a bit of improvement felt, however small, especially with some of the new signings, and it is still very early.”

Later, he added: “Results will need to improve; we can’t get away from that, and we know how this industry operates, but I think they would like to give him more time.”

Ultimately, giving managers more time is a game of risk versus reward. Manchester United know that the grass isn’t necessarily always greener, but the impact of a bounce under a new coach could also spark their season into life.

There will be plenty of conflicting opinions on Amorim’s future, though he appears to be safe for now as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS favour continuity over instability.

Auguste's 73 off 35 trumps Shepherd's 73* off 34 to lift St Lucia Kings to second

Oshane Thomas concedes 33 runs in a ten-ball over (the 15th of the Amazon Warriors innings) – the most expensive figures by a St Lucia Kings bowler in the CPL

Twenty-one-year-old Ackeem Auguste enthralled the St Lucia Kings home fans, with his family members in attendance, by smashing 73 off just 35 balls which scripted their four-wicket win over Guyana Amazon Warriors in their CPL 2025 match on Tuesday.Kings’ lower order added the finishing touches in the chase of 203, sealed by captain David Wiese with 11 balls to spare, which helped them jump to second place, only one point behind Antigua and Barbuda Falcons with one game in hand. Only three points separate five out of the six teams now after Kings made it 3-0 over Warriors in their most recent contests. It was also the first time in the CPL that Amazon Warriors have scored 200-plus and lost, winning each of the last ten times they got there. After opting to bat, Amazon Warriors were given a blazing start by Ben McDermott before Keon Gaston had the two openers, Kevlon Anderson the other, caught by Tim David in the space of three balls in the fourth over. Moeen Ali then lost his middle stump to Khary Pierre for a duck in the next over and Amazon Warriors finished the powerplay on a precarious 44 for 3. The fall of Shimron Hetmyer, who had two fifties in his last three T20 knocks, added to their woes – he called for a second run in the seventh over, but his partner Shai Hope dropped his bat on the way; Hetmyer had to turn back to the striker’s end but his dive wasn’t enough.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

When Hope skewed one to mid-off after crawling to 23 off 27, Amazon Warriors were in real trouble at 78 for 5 in the 13th over. But the arrival of Romario Shepherd changed things straightaway as he smashed a six first ball before smoking three more in a row against the same bowler – Oshane Thomas – in what was a disastrous over for Amazon Warriors. After being hit for a four on the second ball, Thomas overstepped, and followed that with a wide, which kept the Free Hit in place, and Shepherd walloped him for two sixes on the leg side, which also turned out to be no-balls, and kept the Free Hits coming. Thomas finally delivered a legal delivery, and Shepherd lined him up for a 95-metre six. Iftikhar Ahmed ended the over with another six to make it 33 from the over. Thomas eventually finished with 4-0-63-1. These are the most expensive figures by a Kings bowler in the CPL, going past Wahab Riaz’s 3-0-61-0 from CPL 2021.Warriors’ run rate had shot up from 6.78 to 8.53 now with five overs to go. Wiese conceded only 18 from his last two but Shepherd went after Gaston for a 27-run over with two fours and two sixes, along with six wides in it. Gaston got the last over too and a wide after three balls might have sent shivers through the Kings dugout, but he ended things nicely with just three runs off the last three. Warriors had posted 202 thanks to Shepherd’s 23-ball fifty that was studded with seven sixes, and Gaston’s night ended with 4-0-57-2.Johnson Charles and Tim Seifert started things nicely in the chase and even though Charles fell in the second over, Seifert and Auguste joined hands to power them to 86 in the powerplay by taking on Jediah Blades, Moeen and Imran Tahir.Motie and Tahir slowed things down by conceding just 25 in the next four while Auguste got his maiden CPL fifty, the fastest of this season overall, off only 19 balls. Tahir and Motie pegged Kings back with the wickets of Seifert and Chase, although they needed a comfortable 67 from the last 48 balls. Auguste soon holed out for 73 off 35 before Aaron Jones and David brought the asking rate under six an over. David and Jones also fell towards the end before consecutive boundaries from Pierre and Wiese finished things off.

Rodgers could sign big Idah upgrade in Celtic swoop for £7m "goal machine"

Celtic kicked off their Scottish Premiership campaign with a 1-0 win over St Mirren at Parkhead, thanks to a late goal from substitute Luke McCowan.

The Scottish central midfielder came off the bench to score from the edge of the box, via a fortunate deflection, to secure all three points for the home side.

After the match, Brendan Rodgers revealed that he still wants more signings to come through the door before the summer transfer window slams shut at the start of September, particularly in the attacking department.

The Northern Irish boss said: “It’s just about improving. There’s areas that we want to improve in the forward line. That’s something that we hope we can do over these remaining weeks.”

Adam Idah started the win over St Mirren as Celtic’s number nine and failed to do enough to suggest that he is set for a prolific season as a regular starter for the Hoops.

The Scottish giants reportedly agreed a deal worth up to £9.5m to sign the striker on a permanent deal from Norwich City last summer, but he has yet to nail down a position in the XI.

Why Celtic need to sign another striker

Rodgers confirmed that the club are going to be dipping into the market to bolster their attacking options in the coming weeks, and a new number nine should be on the agenda for the Premiership champions.

Idah has, unfortunately, failed to prove that he has the quality or consistency to deliver as the main number nine for Celtic, based on his form over the past 12 months or so.

Since the start of last season, the Ireland international has scored 13 goals from 14.66 xG in the Premiership for the Hoops. This shows that he has not been clinical in front of goal and has wasted too many high-quality opportunities in the league.

The closest Idah came to finding the back of the net against St Mirren was in the clip above, when he brought down a cross from Liam Scales and rocketed a shot off the post from close range.

As you can see in the table above, the £9.5m signing failed to score from 1.09 xG worth of chances and four shots, whilst he also created almost nothing for his teammates.

The 24-year-old centre-forward was replaced by Johnny Kenny in the 78th minute, before Celtic broke the deadlock nine minutes later through McCowan.

Because of the lack of quality that Idah has provided, consistently, on the pitch, Rodgers should be looking to find an upgrade on him before the window slams shut.

Last month, TEAMtalk reported that the Hoops are eyeing up a potential swoop for Wycombe Wanderers centre-forward Richard Kone, who is valued at £7m by the English side, this summer.

Why Celtic should sign Richard Kone

The Premiership champions should push to win the race for the £7m-rated star before the end of the month because he could come in as a big upgrade on Idah.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Kone is a young and hungry forward who could follow in Gary Hooper’s footsteps by making the move from the lower leagues in England to shine at Parkhead for the Hoops.

The biggest concern with Idah is that he does not finish chances efficiently, as evidenced by his aforementioned xG underperformance, but that may not be an issue for the Wycombe star if he makes the move to Glasgow in the coming weeks.

Richard Kone

Kone, who scored three goals in three games in pre-season for Wycombe, enjoyed a stunning 2024/25 campaign in the third tier of English football, and his form last term suggests that the potential is there for him to be a fantastic signing for Celtic.

The Ivorian marksman had only scored three goals in 17 matches in League One in the 2023/24 campaign for the Choir Boys, before he hit his stride in his second season at first-team level.

Kone, as shown in the post above, won the League One Player and Young Player of the Season awards at the end of the campaign, which speaks to how impressive he was at the top end of the pitch.

The Hoops target ended the season with a return of 18 goals and three assists in 43 appearances in League One for Wycombe, albeit it was not enough to help them earn promotion back to the Championship.

As you can see in the table above, the 22-year-old talent was ruthless in front of goal for his side, outperforming his xG by just over two goals in the league, and ranked highly as a creator and a dribbler for his side.

Former teammate Joe Jacobson described him as a “goal machine” and it is not hard to see why his teammates held him in such high regard, as he was lethal for Wycombe in League One last term.

Kone could arrive at Parkhead as a big upgrade on Idah as another towering, but mobile, centre-forward, but one who can finish chances with efficiency.

The £7m-rated star could make the most of the high-quality chances that Celtic are able to create for their number nine on a regular basis, whilst Idah has yet to prove that he can do that.

Therefore, Rodgers should be pushing the club to strike a deal to bring Kone over to Glasgow as soon as possible, as he has the quality, as a scorer and a creator, to come in as an upgrade on his current number nine.

Surrey clinch Finals Day place defending 132 at The Blaze

Ryana MacDonald-Gay, Kalea Moore restrict home side despite unbeaten fifty for Kathryn Bryce

Surrey clinched their place at Finals Day in the inaugural Vitality Blast women’s competition by defending a meagre 132 for nine against The Blaze at Trent Bridge, restricting the home side to 122 for 5 to secure a 10-run victory. They pulled it off despite a bizarre start to The Blaze’s pursuit of their 133-run target in which Alice Monaghan had to be removed from the Surrey attack for bowling two full tosses above waist height and 27 were conceded in the opening two overs.Yet a brilliant comeback by Surrey’s slower bowlers meant that The Blaze – the only side to beat Surrey after winning at the Kia Oval earlier in the season – fell short despite Kathryn Bryce’s unbeaten 53 off 55 balls, with Ryana MacDonald-Gay taking 2 for 14 and Kalea Moore 2 for 17.Despite five dropped catches, The Blaze restricted Surrey to 132 for 9 from 20 overs, England leg-spinner Sarah Glenn finishing with 3 for 20 and Australia all-rounder Heather Graham 2 for 20, Surrey unable to build on 27 from 23 balls from Alice Davidson-Richards with Grace Harris their next-highest scorer on 26 from 19.Surrey’s experiment with Davidson-Richards at the top of the order paid off as she struck five fours in the powerplay, helping the visitors to 39 without loss from six after winning the toss, but when she went down the pitch to Kirstie Gordon in the seventh she was caught at long-on.Bryony Smith was caught at deep midwicket for 18 but The Blaze were unusually sloppy in the field, with Kira Chathli dropped three times before she was into double figures and Harris also put down on 4.The third-wicket pair added 39 from 29 balls before Harris top-edged a slog-sweep off Glenn, whose next over proved calamitous for Surrey as Emma Jones was bowled making room to cut, Chathli caught at mid-off and Monaghan run out. From 91 for 2, Surrey were 98 for 6, and though Phoebe Franklin picked up three boundaries, she was leg-before stepping across to Graham, who then bowled Moore for 2. Cassidy McCarthy dismissed Alexa Stonehouse and though another dropped catch off the last ball of the innings handed MacDonald-Gay two runs, 133 looked a target well within the home side’s compass.Surrey’s fortunes did not improve with the ball, giving The Blaze innings a 12-ball opening over. Started by Monaghan – ordered out of the attack after two full tosses over waist height in her first four deliveries, one of which was a wide – it was ended by Davidson-Richards, who conceded three wides of her own but had a catch put down when Kelly survived a chance on 4.After Stonehouse went for three boundaries, Blaze were 27 without loss from two overs, yet Surrey responded well by conceding only 14 more in the powerplay, picking up a wicket when Marie Kelly hit Moore’s off-spin straight to cover. The squeeze continued and after Georgia Elwiss had picked out Monaghan in the deep on the leg side, Blaze were behind the required rate at 59 for 2 from 10, needing another 74. The Bryce sisters eked out 43 at a run a ball before Sarah failed to clear wide long-on for 21, leaving 40 needed from the last five overs, but Moore conceded only two from the next. The 17th over was the first since the second of the innings in which Surrey had conceded more than eight but after Graham found long-on to go for 3, the Blaze needed 22 from 12 balls. Ella Claridge tried but failed to clear deep midwicket off MacDonald-Gay, after which Franklin had no trouble defending 19 off the last over to see out an extraordinary victory.

Jaiswal still 'trying too hard, too early', says Jaffer

Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 67 runs. Rajasthan Royals (RR) beat Punjab Kings (PBKS). If you hadn’t watched the IPL 2025 game on Saturday night, you would think Sanju Samson was a soothsayer for saying “when he [Jaiswal] performs, he will be winning the games”. Except that it was the slowest half-century of Jaiswal’s IPL career, off 40 balls, and “it didn’t look like he was finding his form”, as Wasim Jaffer put it.”He was still looking to hit the ball really hard. He hit five sixes and three fours, so that’s a high boundary rate, but still played a lot of dot balls,” Jaffer said on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut show. There were 12 dot balls in Jaiswal’s 45-ball 67. Perhaps not a massive number for someone still looking to settle into IPL 2025.Mark Boucher was in agreement with Jaffer.Related

“Getting to fifty, I think he faced close to 40 balls. Then the next five balls after that, he was at an incredible strike rate,” Boucher said, referring to the 17 he scored in the five balls he lasted after getting to the landmark – he hit a six the ball after he got to fifty, and went 1, 6, 4 off the next three before getting out.”It’s almost like he just needed to be there for another two or three overs in order for him to have that match-winning innings that we all know he is very capable of, and he has done in the past. He’ll be quite disappointed to get out when he did actually get out. It was at that point where it was the tipping edge for him [to play] a very significant knock.”Jaiswal had been a point of discussion over the past few days for two reasons. First, his poor returns with the bat – 1, 29 and 4 before this game. And second, the move from Mumbai to Goa in the Indian domestic circuit. Goa won the Ranji Trophy plate title last season and will play in the elite group in 2025-26.Jaffer, a giant of Mumbai and Indian domestic cricket, said he was “surprised and shocked” with the decision.”No matter what Goa was offering him. You don’t leave Mumbai, especially at this age [Jaiswal is 23],” Jaffer said. “It’s okay if somebody is 34-35 then you want to go out.”There have been unconfirmed murmurs about differences with the Mumbai team management, and Jaffer acknowledged that.1:55

Jaffer: Jaiswal’s move from Mumbai to Goa ‘shocking’

“That must have prompted him to take this decision, but I think leaving Mumbai is a shocking decision,” Jaffer said. “He’s a powerhouse. Somebody who has played from Under-14s to now, for Mumbai, and Goa being a plate-group team that has just come into the elite group – for him to go and play there, whatever time he will spend on first-class cricket, I am surprised he’s taken that decision so soon.”As such, India’s international cricketers rarely have – or make – time for domestic cricket. There was a directive from the BCCI recently asking India players who were not gainfully occupied elsewhere or battling fitness issues to return to domestic cricket. This was following India’s Test series loss in Australia. Some of the biggest names in the game did pay heed. Jaiswal was among them, and he played Mumbai’s Ranji game against Jammu & Kashmir in late January, scoring 4 and 26 in a defeat.”But he shouldn’t be looking to play Ranji Trophy,” Jaffer said. “For somebody like him, he should be playing for India in all three formats. That should be his focus.”I’m sure it [the move] is playing on his mind. Because that has been happening in this week or two. But yes, runs from him is very, very vital for Rajasthan Royals. He’s looking a little bit off-colour; trying too hard, trying too hard, too early.”
